Jbl charge 3 military. Pros and cons

Which I consider to be almost the best portable speaker I've ever owned. However, it has two, for some very critical, disadvantages - its dimensions and weight. When you want to be light, Xtreme becomes a burden. However, JBL has something to offer here - a more compact and stylish Charge 3.

Portable speaker review JBL Charge 3, let's start by studying its characteristics and later take a closer look at the capabilities of the portable speaker.

Characteristics of the JBL Charge 3 portable speaker:

At IFA 2016, other body colors were announced, brighter and more saturated. They should go on sale soon.

Equipment

The box for the device is quite large, with high-quality printing, but including a very modest package. Inside, in addition to the speaker itself, there was a Micro USB cable and a 5V and 2.3A power supply. The manufacturer also took care of adapters for various sockets and plugs.

There is no case or carrying strap, as there was in the same one. So we don’t linger, let’s move on.

Design

Among compact speakers from JBL, our version is the heaviest and largest, and in relation to it it is simply tiny.

However, it occupies an intermediate position for a reason. It differs from the flagship “extreme”, perhaps, only in size and sound power, but there are many things that distinguish it from it: from the same dimensions to various kinds of features.

Most of the body area is covered with thick rubberized fabric, which should prevent water and other environmental nuisances from getting inside.

I have no doubts about the reliability of this material. It takes a lot of effort to rub or tear the fabric. But it seems to me that various kinds of stains can still remain on the body.

Nothing is said about dust protection. The standard assumes that it does not exist. However, I threw the speaker into the sand on the beach from a height of about 1.2 meters, sprinkled it with squeaks, drove it back and forth, and so on. After that, you go to the water, rinse it and Charge 3 looks like new. However, it is just sand. But it seems to me that various kinds of stains can still remain on the body. Therefore, do not spill juice or wine on the speaker.

Where there is no fabric, there is a rubberized body with a Soft-Touch effect. There are raised symbol buttons on the top side. It all looks stylish and is easily distinguishable to the touch, since the icons are quite large.

Only two keys are backlit (white or blue): power and JBL Connect.

At the bottom end there is a rubber stand, thanks to which the device stands securely on almost any surface.

Nearby there is a wide rubber plug with several valves to protect the connectors from leaks. We have in stock:

  • Micro USB port for charging the gadget itself
  • full-size USB for charging all other devices (smartphones, action cameras, etc.)
  • standard 3.5 mm audio output

There is nothing more to describe. Everything looks stylish, minimalistic and quite modern. Compared to the Charge 3, it looks a little outdated.

Connection

Connection with sound sources (there can be up to three of them at the same time) is quick and smooth. After the first pairing, the speaker will connect automatically in the future; you don’t need to do anything. The only thing is not to turn off Bluetooth on your smartphone or whatever you have as a source.

If anything, the device can also be connected via a cable with 3.5 mm plugs at both ends. It's strange that the kit didn't include the corresponding wire. Bluetooth transmission will have priority over a wired connection, which, in principle, fits perfectly into the company’s logic. Let me remind you that in recent years JBL has hit wireless technologies. I think this is correct.

In addition, as practice shows, playing music through Bluetooth is better affects the autonomy of the column. Surprising but true.

In addition, I liked the stability of the connection. Firstly, everything is fine with range. My gadget worked without problems at a distance of about five meters from the broadcast source, and at the same time there were two not very thin walls in the signal path. Secondly, I have never noticed any interruptions in communication. Yes, stuttering was present when several appeared around, for example, Wi-Fi networks and something was transmitted via Bluetooth. And therefore unnecessarily overloaded wireless networks places are best avoided.

Like all the latest new products from the company, our hero is equipped with support for JBL Connect. This feature means that branded devices can be combined into a network and play the same music at the same time.

Once connected, the volume control does not sync with the audio source. Simply put, we turn up the volume separately on the smartphone, and then add it separately on the speaker.

Moisture protection

Perhaps this is the coolest feature that personally caused me a truly childish delight. The IPx7 standard has been declared, which implies not just protection from moisture, but also immersion of the device under water to a depth of up to a meter.

Although the manufacturer only talks about rain and splashes, I still decided to slightly submerge the device in water. I immersed the speaker about 20 centimeters under water, and it felt very good. Yes, after swimming, the speakers are somewhat muted, but after a while they push all the water out of their slots and continue to play at full power.

The main thing here is to make sure that the connector is tightly closed with a rubber plug.

After my water tests, I found that some moisture and sand did get under the valves, but no harmful liquid reached the connectors.

Sound

Despite the shape being elongated along its axis and round in cross-section, the sound here does not spread over the entire 360 degrees. The built-in speakers are clearly directional and produce sound from the front side, where the brand logo is located. Accordingly, the sound can be quite easily muffled by simply placing the speaker on the wrong side or accidentally covering it with a pillow, for example.

I wouldn't consider this a disadvantage, but it would still be much cooler if the drivers were aimed at 270 degrees. For starters.

The sound quality did not raise any questions for me. Loud, without blockages, whistles or squeaks, clearly, efficiently - what else have I forgotten? In this regard, there is nothing to improve.

After all, we are dealing with quite large, albeit portable, acoustics. Therefore, in terms of sound quality, the manufacturer can make a big deal. In others, compact devices There may be options, as developers have to make all sorts of compromises.

Switching between tracks is hung on double tap Play/Pause buttons. However, you cannot go back to the composition, only forward.

Speakerphone

Any modern portable speaker has a built-in microphone. In our case, there are also noise reduction and echo cancellation functions.

Autonomous operation

Installed inside lithium ion battery at 6,000 mAh. From it, the speaker can operate (at maximum volume) for 8 hours 24 minutes. A very decent result, which is enough for one quite noisy party.

If you turn the volume down by half or set it to two-thirds, the autonomy results will be much higher. I haven’t tested it, but from experience testing similar devices, this is indeed the case.

The manufacturer says 20 hours battery life and I am inclined to believe that they mean the volume parameters set to 50%.

At the bottom there are five separate LEDs that indicate the level of remaining charge. The readings are always correct: three burning lights mean that 60 percent of the capacity remains, and not as happens when one diode goes out, but in fact only 20 percent remains.

Bottom line

Now relevant JBL Charge 3 price— 10,990 rubles. When buying a speaker for this amount, you pay 70 percent of the amount for quality, technology, features (moisture protection and the Connect function) and about 30% you pay for the brand. After all, we are not dealing with a Chinese noname, but with a world-class brand. This is neither bad nor good. It just happened this way and we need to evaluate it sensibly.

I never tire of repeating that one of the best scenarios for purchasing devices from JBL is buying as a gift. Such a device is always nice to receive for those who like to listen to music and do this not only on the way to work or school using headphones or through laptop speakers.

Yes, most of the time the device will quietly gather dust on a shelf, since each of us has our favorite headphones on the street, and at home we have stationary acoustics that are of good quality. But in those rare minutes of going to the beach, to nature, to the dacha, you will be very glad to have Charge 3. And a nice bonus is that it’s not scary to throw the pump into the sand, and then just go to the river and wash it in the water. Well, isn't it cool?!

Already on sale Price: 10,990 rubles

Hello, fun lovers. Are you planning an unforgettable party at the dacha while your parents are working hard at work? Do you want to amaze the city with your unique musical taste? Organize a movie night with a unique sound system? Then this review of the new JBL Charge 3 speaker is especially for you.

Set

The speaker is supplied in a box made of thick cardboard, on the front side of which there is a photograph of the device itself, and on the ends and back - necessary information about him.
The speaker also comes with a power supply, replacement plugs (American and Russian are included), a USB cable and accompanying documentation.

Design

The column itself looks like a small oblong barrel. On the back of the case there is the inscription Charge 3, on a special plastic protrusion that acts as a stand. Below it there are several ports: 3.5 mm audio jack, microUSB and USB.

The speaker itself is wrapped in a fabric with a structure similar to chain mail; there are plastic inserts on the sides of the bass ports, and the JBL inscription is on them.

On the “front” side there are convex large control keys made of soft-touch material: Bluetooth, volume keys, JBL Connect, power key and Play/Pause.

The JBL Connect key allows you to connect multiple speakers in a chain. for a particularly large tusa-juice. That is, in essence, using several speakers you get stereo sound. In addition, the speakers can be accessed by several devices simultaneously, both gadgets and PCs.

Below the keys there is a small but bright insert with the JBL logo.
The speaker is available in five colors: black, grey, red, blue and turquoise.
As for the dimensions, the speaker weighs about 800 grams, it is comfortable to hold in your hand, and can be carried in a bag or backpack. It fits compactly into a desktop next to a laptop or PC.

Battery

The stated operating time of Charge 3 is 20 hours of music playback at medium volume. Considering that the speaker uses a 6000 mAh battery, this is quite real numbers.
The speaker's power supply time from the power supply is 2.5 hours. From a USB cable via a laptop - 3.5 hours.
Among other things, JBL Charge 3 itself acts as a battery, and you can power any gadget from it.

Water protection

JBL Charge 3 has IPX7 protection, which means that the speaker can withstand “immersion”, but nevertheless - short-term: to a depth of 1 meter and for 30 minutes, no more. Also, make sure that the plug fits tightly, and I do not recommend turning on the column immediately after leaving the water.

Sound

Here we come to the main point of review of the speaker - sound.
JBL Charge 3 is equipped with two 50 mm speakers, the reproduced frequency range ranges from 65 Hz to 20 kHz, this, two passive radiators and a huge volume reserve provide the speaker with loud and clear sound.

There is no need to worry about the location of the smartphone; Charge 3 uses the Bluetooth 4.1 protocol, so gadgets can be located at a distance of several meters from each other - this will not affect the sound quality and volume in any way.

Let's sum it up

JBL Charge 3 is good decision for music lovers. This is a convenient speaker with comfortable dimensions, beautiful appearance, loud speakers and ample capabilities. For 11 thousand rubles you get a device that can be used not only as a speaker, but also a speakerphone and a portable power supply.

The third generation of the JBL Charge series is rightfully considered the king of portable acoustics - there is nothing to complain about in the design of the speaker, and besides, you will have to look hard for equals in sound quality.

Barrel in chain mail

Externally, the model looks like a small barrel, dressed in fabric chain mail. The outfit protects the speaker body from mechanical damage (mainly scratches), and the internal “filling” from dust and water according to the requirements of the IPX7 standard. The acoustics can be briefly immersed under water to a depth of 1 m, and they are not afraid of rain or splashes. The main thing is not to forget to tightly cover the area with the connection interfaces with a rubber plug - AUX, microUSB and full-size USB port.

Juicy sound

In the third version of the speaker, a platform for horizontal parking has been “grown” to its body. Of course, the JBL Charge 3 is also not deprived of the ability to be placed in a vertical position, but in this case one of the pair of passive bass radiators is blocked. In tandem with them are 50 mm speakers with a total power of 20 W. At maximum volume, the speaker screams indecently loudly, and without compromising the sound quality - it remains clean, rich and rich. By linking several JBL portable devices into a single speaker system (JBL Connect function), you can organize a real concert at home or on the street.

Power Bank

A 6000 mAh battery hidden in the depths of the case powers not only the speaker, but also other devices (when connected via the aforementioned USB port). JBL Charge 3 is famous for its longevity - the speaker can handle 20 hours of playback of songs at medium volume levels without recharging. Of course, everything also depends on the genre of music - tracks with a predominance of powerful bass drain the battery many times faster (in about 7-8 hours).

Party King

Speaking about the capabilities of the model, it would be a sin not to honor the built-in microphone with noise and echo cancellation. For incoming calls (and the speaker can be used as a speakerphone), it provides excellent quality speech transmission. Summarizing all the advantages, JBL Charge 3 confirms the title of the king of parties, regardless of the location - be it at home, a clearing in the forest, a snowy ski slope or a hot beach.

Louder, heavier, more secure

Of all the portable lines JBL acoustics the average buyer will most likely be attracted to the Charge. Compared to the dubious advantages of other series, such as light music or carbines, the JBL Charge's trump card looks more practical - it is a large battery that can be used to charge other devices. Earlier this year, JBL introduced the Charge 3, the fourth model in the lineup. Let's tell you more about it.

What's in the box?

The JBL Charge 3 package is the same as the Charge 2 - a bright orange power supply (5 V; 2.3 A) with replaceable plugs and a micro-USB cable. IPx7 protection eliminates the need for a case

Design

Previous JBL Charge models resembled beer cans. And Charge 3 looks like a junior modification of the JBL Xtreme “barrel”.

In addition to the color presented above, the speaker is also available in black, grey, red and blue. Although the official website states that we received the teal modification, in fact the color is exactly turquoise - turquoise.

The JBL logo stands out in the center of the speaker body, and at the bottom there is a five-position charging indicator, bright and very convenient. Even if you look from above, you can understand the charge level by the reflection from the table surface.

All buttons are placed at the top and symmetrically arranged. From left to right: Bluetooth pairing, volume down, power on, setup JBL connections Connect, increase the volume and pause the track.

All connectors are tightly closed with a massive rubber plug. If you use it carefully, it is unlikely to begin to leak over time.

The set of connectors is the same as in the JBL Charge 2 - 3.5 mm TRS output, micro-USB for charging the speaker, USB port (5 V, 2 A) for charging other devices. Note that JBL does not skimp on the output amperes in the Charge speakers, which is good news

Passive radiators are placed in the recesses at the ends, as before. As far as we were able to see, they cannot let water through.

To complete the picture, let's look at the column below. The base has a small area and a relief texture. Considering the solid weight of the speaker, there is no need to worry about stability.

In addition to the charge indicator, Charge 3 lights up the power button: blue when paired via Bluetooth and just white when turned on. The JBL Connect button next to it also lights up white when the mode is running.

The design of the JBL Charge 3 is truly a success. A beautiful symmetrical body, an interesting textile covering and the absence of dubious design solutions such as touch buttons. It's no surprise that some other JBL speakers are very similar to this one. The manufacturer will have to try very hard to ensure that in the next generations portable speakers do something even more interesting.

Measurements

We carried out frequency response measurements speaker system on the axis of the main speakers.

Almost throughout its entire length, the graph maintains an acceptable deviation, without extensive dips and peaks. In the stated frequency range the lower limit surprisingly clearly coincides - 65 Hz. But on the opposite side, the level goes beyond -6 dB much earlier than the declared 20 kHz.

Now, using the method described in the JBL Charge 2 review, let’s estimate the sound pressure.

Speaker systemMaximum sound pressure, dBA
JBL Charge 387,0
Microlab D2169,7/74,0
Microlab D22 (speakers up/microphone)70,9/76,3
Creative Sound Blaster Roar 2 (horizontal (with Roar) / vertical (with Roar))78,4 (80,0) / 84,2 (85,9)
Microlab T584,4
Fugoo Tough (normal/loud mode)75,7 / 78,9
Bliss Sound BTA-871,3
Microlab MD11264,9
JBL Charge 281,2
Creative Sound Blaster Roar (Roar mode off/on)79,1 / 80,4

The move to 10-watt speakers did not leave our measurement microphone indifferent. The numbers show that even the Sound Blaster Roar 2 with boost mode is no match for the competition. The lag, however, is quite insignificant.

Sound

Since JBL Charge 2, the sound has become more balanced. This is noticeable if you pay attention to the place of vocals in the compositions: with many other speakers it dominates, while with the JBL Charge 3 it sounds in harmony with the rest of the ensemble. The accents of the drums, the attack of the strings, and the ringing of cowbells are in place. The openness of sound characteristic of the series has not gone away - there is no need to cheat with the installation, the main speakers look straight ahead.

We had the opportunity to reproduce different connection schemes with the JBL Charge 3. First, we connected the speaker via a cable to the output of the E-MU 0404 USB audio card, which played FLAC songs from the computer. Then we connected the speaker via Bluetooth to Huawei Nova Plus and transferred the same tracks from streaming service Deezer in so-called “high” quality, the characteristics of which are not specified.

Based on the results of the comparison, the conclusion is this: you shouldn’t dismiss portable audio systems that “only play home videos from VKontakte.” With different connections, the sound differed radically. With a Bluetooth connection, the touches of instruments and dynamics almost disappeared, and vocal parts began to confidently drown out the rest of the “mess.” With a better quality tract things were much better. If JBL Charge 3 form factor systems fit perfectly into cramped concrete boxes, then why not try using them in stationary scenarios? Perhaps this will be enough for you, and you can use the saved space to greater advantage.

JBL Charge 3 features JBL Connect mode, which allows you to sync multiple JBL speakers. Everything works the same way as we described in the JBL Pulse 2 review - through the JBL Connect application. In addition, JBL Charge 3 can work as wireless headset, and there is nothing unusual in the implementation of this mode.

Autonomous operation

As usual, we measured battery life when connected via Bluetooth. 40 minutes before the scheduled time, JBL Charge 3 turned off. Apparently, in an attempt to conserve the remaining charge. But the disco must go on, and we squeezed some more time out of the speaker.

Speaker systemApproximate volumeBattery lifeCharging time using standard means
JBL Charge 3average13 h 50 min3 hours 30 minutes
JBL Charge 2averageabout 6 p.m.about 2 hours
Microlab D2150% 15 h 30 min4 hours 50 minutes
Microlab D2250% 7 hours 10 minutes4 hours
Creative Sound Blaster Roar 280% 5 hours 40 minutesabout 2.5 hours

Compared to the second version, battery life has decreased and charging time has increased. It’s nice that the device does not interrupt the music with low battery messages, but only flashes a red charge indicator.

Conclusions

JBL continues to confidently lead the Charge series towards excellence. It is commendable that sound quality and design remain a priority. And bright distinctive feature Charge 3 is a high class of moisture protection. By the sum of all the advantages we get a universal portable device: In summer it is ready for adventures on the beach, and in winter for parties in large living rooms.

At the time of writing, JBL Charge 3 costs 2-3 thousand more than JBL Charge 2+. The extra cost here will be completely justified: the Charge 3 looks better in everything except battery life.

All speakers from the JBL Charge line are produced with a wide range of customers in mind. These are not the models that are built into additional options that are not needed by most users. These are devices that give the owner exactly what is required from wireless speakers: good sound, moisture protection and increased battery life.

JBL Charge 3 is the best representative of this line. The speaker received not only better sound quality, but also IPX7 moisture protection. Let's take a look this model more details.

  • Body colors: Black, Blue, Grey, Red, Green;
  • Case material: Plastic, textile;
  • Dimensions (L×W×T): 213 x 87 x5 mm;
  • Weight: 800 g;
  • Frequency range: 65 – 20000 Hz;
  • Signal to noise ratio: 80 dB;
  • Total output power: 20W;
  • Battery: 6000 mAh Li-Ion, non-removable;
  • Operating time: 20 hours in active mode;
  • Linear AUX input;
  • Other connectors: MicroUSB, USB Type-A;

Packaging and equipment

The speaker is delivered in a large box, which itself is depicted in a state of immersion under water. On the front side of the package we can see a list of the main differences between this audio system and other models. These are Bluetooth, IPX7 waterproofness, JBL Connect and victory in the international Design Awards 2016 competition. On the other hand, everything is described in detail technical specifications devices.

In addition to the speaker itself, the kit includes a power supply and two plugs - American and Russian. So you can connect the system to any outlet. In addition, the kit includes a microUSB cable, which, unfortunately, not all manufacturers can offer. Well, according to the standard, the box contains documentation. I must say, the equipment is up to par. Of course, there are no cases, bags or other accessories, but everything you need is there.

Design and build

All devices of this model range in my own way appearance For some reason they resemble cans of soft drinks. But in JBL Charge 3, the developers decided to improve the design a little. Now the column looks more like a barrel. This effect was achieved due to the adjustment of the lines on the sides of the body. By the way, the body itself is made of plastic. But there are also aluminum inserts. A pleasant-to-touch and very durable fabric is stretched over the body, which covers almost the entire area of the device.

Thanks to the textile surface, the speaker holds very well in the hand even after being submerged under water. There are five different colors available to suit every taste: black, grey, red, blue and turquoise.

There are six function buttons on the case. They are designed to control pairing with other devices, adjust the volume level, switch tracks and turn the device on/off. The buttons themselves protrude slightly above the fabric, so they are easy to find by touch.

On the front side you can find the manufacturer's logo. And just below there are five LED lights that provide information about the current charge of the battery.

On the reverse side there are wired interfaces. There are 3.5 mm TRS, microUSB and USB connectors. The last connector is needed if you want to charge other devices from the speaker. The output produces 2 amps. And this is quite enough to recharge your smartphone or tablet. The connectors, like everything else, are protected from water. A thick rubber plug is responsible for this.

The upper part of the speaker, like the lower part, is covered with a passive radiator. However, the column can be placed vertically, because the radiators are located in small recesses. And for horizontal placement there is a special platform below.

There are also disadvantages to this assembly. For example, some problems may arise with the rubber plug on the connectors. It doesn't always go all the way into the groove. As a result, water may enter the port. Another drawback is the way it is turned on. To start the device, just briefly press the top button. Because of this, the column often turns on by itself. Also, when turned on, a sound is played that cannot be turned off or its volume changed.

Sound

Compared to the previous model in this series, the sound quality has been noticeably improved. Previously, there was such a problem as vocals drowning out the sounds of instruments. In the new speaker, all sounds successfully harmonize with each other. There are no dips or distortions at any frequency.

But, the sound quality can be affected not only by the speaker itself, but also by the device with which it is paired. Be that as it may, wireless connection is still inferior to wired connection between the audio source and the playback device. If you separate the paired device from the speaker and move a few meters away, you may notice that the sound deteriorates.

The device synchronizes quite successfully with the computer. It is best to use the device in a stationary format. You can, of course, use the audio system at a party, but make sure that the smartphone with music is not too far away from the speaker.

Autonomy

If you believe the officially stated specifications, JBL Charge 3 should work successfully at average volume for 20 hours without recharging. But this figure is a little exaggerated. In fact, the battery only lasts for 16 hours, which is also a very good result. If the battery is almost exhausted, the device will notify you by flashing a red LED. I am very pleased that the low charge does not in any way affect the quality and ability to play music.

It will take 2.5 hours to fully charge the speaker from the power supply. But if you charge from a computer, you will have to wait an hour longer. If desired, you can use the audio system as a power bank and charge other devices from it.

Peculiarities

The undoubted advantage of JBL Charge 3 is the presence of the JBL Connect system. It makes it possible to use several speakers simultaneously as a single audio system. When two speakers are synchronized, a stereo sound effect is created. Control this process possible using a special application.

There is also a speakerphone. It allows you to use the device for a full conversation on the phone. The interlocutor's voice is transmitted through external speakers. So, it is ideal for creating video conferencing.

Conclusions

Perhaps this best model from this price segment. For just $180, you get everything you could ask for in a portable speaker without much compromise on sound.

The following advantages of the audio system can be noted:

  • Autonomy;
  • Moisture protection IPX 7;
  • Speakerphone;
  • Grippy textile surface;
  • Possibility to turn the speaker into a power bank.

There were also disadvantages:

  • Unpleasant sound when connecting via Bluetooth;
  • Risk of accidental activation;
  • Excessively hard plug on the underside of the case.

Of course, you'll find more functionality in more expensive models, but for the money, the JBL Charge 3 is almost perfect. If this is still not enough for you, read ours.
