While it all seems simple, the numbers and their official interpretations can't really tell you how waterproof (or not waterproof) the phone you've bought is. After all, the test that a smartphone passes under controlled laboratory conditions is often very different from what happens in the real world.

Let's take a look at the warnings that smartphone manufacturers themselves place on their websites, such as Sony's warning about the Xperia's "water resistance".

As you can see, laboratory conditions tend to be very different from real situations. The tests are always carried out in fresh water, which eliminates many of the usual factors, such as salt water at the beach, chlorinated pool water, or a sticky drink from a bottle.
