In Windows 8/10, when the Internet is not working, a wireless network error may be accompanied by the message “No Internet connection, secure” or the message “Unidentified network”. This happens when, after successful work for many days, the Internet suddenly stops working.

But the “Protected” status is an indicator of working WPA-2 encryption; the “Protected” inscription appears on all detected wireless networks that are closed from unauthorized access with a software key. Consequently, its other semantic part - “No Internet connection” - reports that access to Network resources has been lost either on the router itself or on this PC/laptop/tablet.

The error “No Internet connection, protected” is specific to Wi-Fi networks, but “Unidentified network” is a common case for all networks, including cable.

You can try to fix the error by restarting Windows 10, turning off and then turning on the router, and also by unplugging and inserting the provider cable (or USB modem - when using mobile Internet). But when the problem is more serious, use the instructions below: the error “No Internet connection, secure” is only part of the overall problem, the solution of which must be approached comprehensively.

Checking IP settings and Wi-Fi components

To solve the problem with connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi, first of all, pay attention to the network connection settings.

  1. Give the command “Start - Control Panel - Network and Sharing Center - Change adapter settings.”

  3. Make sure that the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain a DNS address automatically" options are enabled.

  4. Close all windows by clicking OK, restart Windows 10 and check if the Internet is working (the message “No Internet connection, secure” should change to “Connected, secure”, or simply “Connected”). Launch your browser and go to a website.
  5. If the same error appears again, then return to the same IP settings and enter the DNS addresses from Google - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, or other public DNS addresses (for example, from Yandex). Save this setting, restart Windows 10 and test the connection again.
  6. Enter the IP addresses of your network from the numbering range of the router as the main IP addresses, for example, 192.168.1.* (you cannot enter an IP value close to 1 in the last section - most often they take values ​​101–200). The subnet mask is automatically registered by Windows, but the gateway address is the IP of the router itself, in this example it is 192.168.0.1. Save the setting, restart Windows and check again if the Internet is available.

You can restart the Wi-Fi adapter in any version of Windows, starting with XP, by giving the command: right-click on the Wi-Fi icon - “Disable” in the already familiar network connections folder.

The “Enable” command is given in the same way. Similarly, you can disable and enable Wi-Fi from the sidebar of Windows 8/10 - either using airplane mode (all wireless networks will be turned off, even Bluetooth), or the Wireless network switch.

Checking router settings

So, nothing on the PC solved the problem. Try to access the Internet from another computer or gadget through the same router. For example, if an Android smartphone displays endless acquisition of an IP address, or displays the error “It is impossible to connect to the Internet via this network,” the problem lies in the router settings.

Physically, the router may fail - the router itself is not insured against any failure, be it a failure of the LAN/WAN interface or the Wi-Fi “distributor”. After many years of operation, natural wear and tear occurs. Or, when it was operated in conditions of dirt, heat and high humidity, it could fail prematurely even after several weeks or months of operation. If the LAN functional nodes on such a router fail, the Internet will disappear, and if the Wi-Fi radio subsystem breaks down, the PC or gadget will display the error “No connection” (“Wi-Fi networks not found”).

  1. Log in from any PC or gadget by typing the router's IP address into the address bar of your browser, for example, 192.168.1.1.

  2. Check (command “Network - WAN”) whether your WAN settings received from your provider are in place (if you use a cable provider, for example, home Internet from Beeline”), and whether the router connects to the Internet automatically.

If you do not have the “Static IP address” service activated (it is used mainly in work networks, for example, when you need to organize remote video surveillance of an office or industrial building), check whether the “Dynamic IP” option is enabled. Check to see if the Internet auto-shutdown feature is enabled when the Wi-Fi network is idle. If there are any discrepancies in the settings, correct them. Before connecting to the Internet, check all the necessary settings of the router - they will be inactive when the connection is working.
  4. Give the command “Wireless network - Wireless mode settings”. Check that the Wi-Fi network is visible to all your devices, and that auto-selection of Wi-Fi speed, width and channel number occupied by the router on the air are enabled.

  5. Give the command “DHCP - DHCP Settings” and check the values ​​of the starting and ending IP addresses. Without DHCP settings, each device would need to manually set IP addresses. If you do not assign IP addresses, the Wi-Fi network on your PC or gadget will be listed as unidentified (“perpetually receiving an IP”), and the Internet will not work.

  6. Give the command “Wireless Networks - MAC Address Filter” and make sure that device binding by MAC address is disabled.

If all the required settings are correct, return to the familiar WAN settings submenu and enable Internet access. Then connect to the router from any gadget or PC. Your favorite sites and apps should work.

Disabling antivirus, firewall and firewall

Often, these three seemingly most important lines of protection from outside intrusions prevent you from freely accessing any sites. In a good way, security is important only when you use a PC purely for work, as a source of income, and carry out monetary transactions, or are an agent of some secret service, where the rules of work impose very strict restrictions on your security. In other cases, such protection is simply not needed.

Firewall and antivirus are everyone's choice. Which firewall you use - Agnitum Outpost or Windows 8 Firewall Control - is up to you. The same is true for antiviruses - suddenly you don’t like Kaspersky, but prefer, say, NOD32 or Avast.

But the Windows firewall is the same for everyone. To disable it, do the following.

Close all windows by clicking OK, restart Windows 10. Now the Windows Firewall will not interfere with your Wi-Fi.

On the taskbar

This option is only available in the Windows 10 Settings app and the taskbar network menu. You won't see this option if you disable your Wi-Fi interface through the old Network Connections interface in Control Panel.

To turn off Wi-Fi from the taskbar, click the Wi-Fi icon in the notification area next to your clock and click the Wi-Fi button to turn it off.

If your Wi-Fi is set to Off, you can turn it on in 1 hour, 4 hours or 1 day - just like in the Settings app. The default option is “Manual” which means you need to click on the “Wi-Fi” icon in this menu to turn Wi-Fi back on.

Unfortunately, this option is not available when Airplane Mode is enabled. If you want to automatically turn on Wi-Fi, you need to turn off Wi-Fi rather than turn on Airplane Mode.

Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi. Set Wi-Fi connection to "Off" Here you can set automatic Wi-Fi connection after 1 hour, 4 hours or 1 day. The Manual option means that Windows will not automatically turn on Wi-Fi. You will have to do this yourself.
