The question “Should I carry my phone in a case or not?” often causes a mixed response. Someone refuses protective accessories, and his smartphone remains original appearance, but remains less resistant to physical damage, and once a year someone takes out of its case an ideal gadget that has never been serviced. However, should the same choice be made when we're talking about about watches? No matter how wild it may seem to me, such a choice already exists.

Colleagues from 9to5Mac presented a selection of protective accessories for the Apple Watch. There are already a lot of accessories, and the most interesting of them are, perhaps, the choice of which is constantly growing. However, to my surprise, there were already quite a few cases for watches. Take a look, maybe you'll like something.

If someone tells you that you're wearing your Apple Watch incorrectly and that's why it doesn't work as well, try the $20 bumper.

This company became famous for making sixth generation watches. Now they want to turn Apple Wath into the same iPod nano with a strap from Lunatik.

Did you buy a watch? Respect. It's time to protect and diversify them.

There are already a lot of accessories for the Apple Watch, but you don't need all of them. I’ll tell you what I saw, tested myself and can recommend – from owner to owner.

1. Case protection and cases for Apple Watch

I love my watch and watch with regret as scratches accumulate on it. This is the sad fate of all steel Apple Watches. They attract bumps and scratches, like back panel old iPods. And this, as you know, is a sentence.

You hit something a couple of times and you're content with a decent mark that won't go anywhere. And which you can’t erase.

If I had known that this would happen, then along with the steel Apple Watch I would have purchased a case from Spigen. Unlike the mass of cheap silicone analogues, their cases are thought out to the smallest detail.

Spigen has several models for Apple Watch. They differ not only in color, but also in shape and thickness. From severe to ultra-fine. Each set includes protective films on the front and back sides, for which the manufacturer has great respect.

✓ Slim Armor from Spigen for Apple Watch – RUB 2,490.

A balanced version of hull protection: both the wolves are well-fed and the sheep are safe. A fairly thin but durable silicone shell with a glossy effect and full protection of most of the body. Unlike other models, they haven’t forgotten about the Digital Crown: it will be almost impossible to scratch it.

I thought that managing the clock would become awkward. Nothing of the kind. The way it spins, the way it spins. But now there won’t be a single scratch. As for the rest of the body – minimum details, maximum benefits. It fits well on the hand and looks simply chic with sporty straps.

✓ Rugged Armor from Spigen for Apple Watch – RUB 2,490.

A completely different protection format. What comes to mind are heavy-duty iPhone cases designed to withstand harsh environments. Rugged Armor is for those who want to turn their Apple Watch into a G-SHOCK equivalent. Double the silicone layer, now with a matte finish. The shape and design deserve the highest praise: it is immediately clear that Spigen was inspired by the timeless ideas of the practical Japanese from Casio ;)

In addition to a different shape and enhanced protection, Rugged Armor has a separate moving button for the call-your-friends key. The black model in this series is my favorite. It was as if the Apple Watch had received a boost of testosterone, read articles by Roman Yuryev and pumped up in the hall. White is perfect for sporty girls.

✓ Thin Fit – 2290 rubles

If you didn’t like the previous options because of their size, pay attention to Thin Fit. This is Spigen's minimalist protection that looks like it was designed by Apple. Parallels immediately come to mind with Bumper covers for old iPhones: neat, convenient, does not interfere in any way and takes up minimal space. Only this is not a cover, but a cover.

The side button to call friends is recessed into the case, which gives the Apple Watch a more calm, measured style. It seems that many of us imagined Apple watches this way before their official announcement. Sporty, neat, moderately protected. Nothing extra!

2. Protective films For Apple screen Watch

Owners of a steel Apple Watch benefit here: the screen on their watch is simply technically difficult to scratch. The sports model, in terms of the quality of the spare parts, differs little from the analogue in the iPhone 6: sooner or later small scratches will appear on it.

To protect the display, you can use films adapted to the curved glass of watches. They lie evenly on the surface and protect it from scratches and light impacts, acting as a shock absorber. By the way, the films are ideally combined with the cases: the result is complete protection of the case without the slightest hint of joints.

✓ Steinheil Flex film for Apple Watch from Spigen – 1990 rub.

Spigen has always had great films, and an option for apple watch– is no exception. It completely replicates its iPhone analogue of the same name in its chemical composition: maximum transparency, no image distortion, full transmission of all gestures. Plus a non-yellowing coating and decent resistance to minor impacts. Covers the entire screen, completely.

One set contains two films. I bought one and forgot about the issue of protection for a long time. Thickness – only 0.16 mm! The gluing process is very simple, because the screen area is smaller than that of an iPhone. You may not even have straight arms. The kit includes a display cleaning cloth from Zeiss, as well as stickers to remove dust and bubbles if any appear.

✓ Crystal protector for Apple Watch from Spigen – RUB 1,490.

This is a beast of a slightly different caliber. The model was created specifically for those who have already decided to wear a watch with a case and want to achieve maximum protection. Crystal film has the same clarity as Steinheil Flex, but is slightly thicker and denser. It will completely protect against scratches, plus it will absorb shocks.

Crystal does not cover the entire display area of the Apple Watch, so it is not suitable for those who simply use a watch. But the kit itself is cheaper than film.

3. Replacement straps for Apple Watch

Survived: getting an Apple watch is easier than finding the right strap for it :) The problem, by the way, is relevant even abroad, where special sites and communities are created to solve it. The resulting niche is being filled by third-party strap manufacturers.

Their advantage is that they offer either the same belts that Apple has, but cheaper; or models that Apple simply does not have. Here are some examples of such straps.

✓ HOCO Metal Watchband for Apple Watch – 5990 rub.

A metal bracelet from Apple costs incredible money: more than the base model of the watch itself! Therefore, we recommend looking towards analogues. Moreover, it is much easier to get them in Russia. The analogue from Hoco has a very similar design: brushed steel, convenient clasp. The mechanism is hidden, internal, without a large attachment on the outside, like Apple.

It looks decent in person and goes well with a steel watch. A companion for suits, business people and just lovers of metal bracelets. And relatively inexpensive.

✓ HOCO Art Series Bamboo Real Leather – 5490 rub.

One of the disadvantages of the Apple Watch is its specific set of original straps, in which there is no place for the classics. Personally, I, like many others, am accustomed to traditional leather bracelets with a natural texture. One of them is promptly offered by Hoco.

The red model is suitable regardless of the gender of the owner and will look chic with steel Apple Watches, as well as with white aluminum ones from the Sport series. I'm looking forward to a black version to try on my Apple watch.

✓ Baseus leather belt for Apple Watch – RUB 2,490.

With stainless steel housing it is becoming more and more affordable. Watch owners are starting to post photographs showing shiny steel watches that have already been scratched. Numerous presentation videos praised the steel used in the production of the watch. In particular, it was stated that due to cold forging it was possible to achieve excellent strength, however, as it turned out, the watch case was very easily scratched. It was especially frustrating for those who spent $549 or more on the mid-tier Apple Watch. But don't despair, because you can easily remove the resulting scratches for just 5 bucks...

First of all, let's get one important fact clear: the fact that the Apple Watch can get scratched is not a sensation. Stainless steel in general scratches very easily. In addition, long-term Apple users have already had similar experiences: for example, remember the downsides of any iPod, including the iPod Classic. They simply attracted scratches. Steel watches have the same properties. Almost every polished watch is made from 316L stainless steel (which is known as "surgical grade stainless steel") or 904L stainless steel, which is used on Rolex watch cases, which can also be scratched and this is completely normal.

There is a simple solution. If your stainless steel watch is scratched, you can polish it yourself to remove the scuffs. You can also take them to a jeweler or watchmaker if you don't want to do the polishing yourself. You just need to take a special metal polish that costs about $5 (which is used in the video) and wipe the watch using a regular towel. Be sure to wash your hands after finishing the procedure. It's very simple, the video shows how quickly you can remove small scratches using polish.

Is it a big disappointment that the Apple Watch is very susceptible to scratches and mechanical stress, given the high-quality materials that the company uses in the watch manufacturing process? Of course, this is very disappointing. But let's look at it another way: stainless steel is not a super strong material. 316L stainless steel is actually softer than the 7000 series aluminum used in the Apple Watch Sport. You might ask: Why doesn't Apple use stronger steel? Sure, they could make watches out of 904L steel, but it's much more expensive, so using it would undoubtedly increase the cost of the Apple Watch. In addition, the polished surface of 904L stainless steel can also be scratched very easily.

Consultations with many watchmakers give quite different answers regarding polishing the Apple Watch. Some of the consultants say that they will easily take on polishing a watch for 20-40 dollars, while others do not want to take risks and are afraid of damaging other elements of the new watch. And in some ways they are right, because you need to be especially careful to avoid getting polish into small holes, and also try not to rub too quickly and hard.

If this is your first Apple steel product, you might be surprised that a brand new watch is scratched - this is natural, and the cost has absolutely no bearing on the durability of the watch in this case - even premium products will scratch. In any case, small scuffs and scratches can be easily polished and removed. Of course, it is better to have a watch that will never be scratched or show signs of wear. However, for now, polishing your stainless steel watches yourself is the way to go to get rid of minor scuff marks on your steel watches easily and inexpensively.

Steel Apple Watch scratches faster than other models in the collection smart watch Apple. Over the course of several years of daily use, the case loses its presentable appearance.

But it can be easily polished, and that is known. For what? For example, you are not satisfied with the appearance of your watch. Or are you going to prepare them as a gift.

Let's say the decision to remove scratches is pleasant. Where to start?

1. Where to buy and get polish

There are a lot of videos and instructions on this topic. Everywhere they offer different polishing products. Sometimes - a whole bunch.

It is unlikely that there will be a desire to buy several varieties of these products, moreover, in large containers. This is quite expensive; the Apple Watch requires a minimum volume.

How I did it:
On the way home from work I stopped at the nearest car service center. They usually have everything they need to work on a car's body, including its steel surfaces. As a result, they poured some polishing paste into a coffee cup for a symbolic 100 rubles.

Moreover, there are two types.

2. What type of paste is suitable for Apple Watch?

It's very simple.

To remove small scratches you need a paste. tender processing.

If you need to fix deep scratches, then for tough. But the steel will lose its shine.

A girl polishes the body with a hard polishing paste.

Therefore, be sure to grab a “gentle” paste to apply the final touch and return the glossy surface to its place.

3. What to do before polishing

In the last picture, the holes for the microphone and speakers are not covered by anything. I didn't cover it with anything either. In the end, I picked the paste out of the cracks with everyone possible ways, because it was not washed off with water. Take this point into account.

The holes are too small, but it’s better to cover them with tape in advance than to suffer later.

And don’t forget to completely clean the watch case of all dirt.

4. Don't apply too much paste

The more the merrier - not this case. It is for this reason that you may experience the problems described at the beginning of the previous paragraph.

Apply a small layer of paste to a piece of microfiber cloth and rub it in. The cloth should soak the paste so that no excess remains. If they remain, it means there is too much paste and it will be pushed into the cracks.

5. Don't overdo it

Perform polishing carefully, with calm movements. The cloth will turn black - this is normal. In fact, we remove the thin outer layer of the case along with the scratches.

You can watch the process in this short video:

Bottom line

My Apple Watch before polishing:

The result is excellent, the watch is like new.

But I don't recommend polishing your Apple Watch unless absolutely necessary. A small number of small scratches will not affect the overall appearance of the watch.

P.S. After some time I decided to try the sports aluminum model. Over 8 months of active use, not a single scratch appeared on either the glass or the body.

But in the future it will not be possible to get rid of scratches: only the steel version of the watch can be polished.
