Android update procedure. Android update: how to update to a new version, rollback? Guide in detail

How to update any phone to Android latest version- all the most effective ways in one article! The world does not stand still and this fully applies to software mobile gadgets. Updates are regularly developed for operating systems that are designed to eliminate identified deficiencies of the outdated system. Below is an update guide for Android devices.

Inexperienced owners of mobile devices often neglect the procedure for upgrading the OS, which leads to instability of the device, a decrease in the number of supported programs, etc. Therefore, the answer to the question: “Should I update Android?” is obvious. Yes, if this is possible and the hardware capabilities of the phone or tablet meet the requirements of the new shell.

It should be noted that most programs are “tailored” for current modifications of Android. IN outdated versions A significant amount of OS software may not function correctly or may not start at all.

Manufacturers of mobile equipment regularly carry out planned work to identify and eliminate defects in early modifications of the OS, and also add new functions to the system that make it easier for the user to use the gadget and ensure energy efficiency.

But not only the manufacturer is working in this direction. Third-party specialists also release custom firmware, which sometimes surpass official software in speed and brevity of external equipment. The main disadvantages third party firmware, is the removal from warranty service device by the manufacturer immediately after installing unofficial software, and there are also frequent cases of the gadget being “bricked” after a procedure performed by inexperienced users.

Among the disadvantages of updating with licensed firmware modifications, it should be noted that the parallel installation of a large number of utilities that the owner of the phone or tablet does not need. Without root rights, it is not possible to remove them from the system. Also, after the upgrade, some icons on the main screen may disappear, but this means that you will simply need to install their more advanced analogues from the market.

Preparatory activities before performing the procedure

Before updating the Android version, you must complete the following preliminary steps:

  • Save important information for the user from the device’s memory on external media or carry out a full backup of the OS;
  • Fully charge the device;
  • Decide on the version to install (official or from third-party developers) and download it.

It's easy to update Android, but how do you know which modification is the latest? There are many ways to do this, from reading information on thematic forums on social networks to studying news from official sources.

  3. The display of the “Download” inscription here indicates the presence of a current modification of the OS available for installation on the device;
  4. Tap “Download”;
  5. Wait until the process is completely completed;
  6. Then click “Restart and install”;
  7. Wait until the process completes and the gadget automatically restarts;
  8. Ready.

We update with third-party applications

If you cannot use the built-in system tools, updating will help third party application « ROM Manager" After launching the application, the user will see a recommendation to install “ ClockWorkMod Recovery"(CWM). It is necessary to agree and install.

  1. Save the file with the firmware on the gadget’s SD card (it’s better to download it from the manufacturer’s resource);
  2. Click “Install ROM from SD”;
  3. Activate “Save current ROM”;
  4. The program will display a warning asking you to confirm the firmness of your intentions;
  5. Wait for the process to complete;

If installation using the above program turns out to be impossible, then “CWM” will come to the rescue.

You will need to complete the following steps:

  • Save a file with the latest OS version to SD;

  4. Wait for the process to complete;
  5. Ready.

Custom firmware for Android - how to install and where to download?

To do this, you need “Root” permissions, so install the “z4root” utility through the PlayMarket.

Having provided yourself with advanced rights, install “Team Win Recovery Project”.

Next, download the version of custom firmware you like, for example, from the resource: https://mdforum.ru/showthread.php?t=791. Or simply download by request in a search engine: AOKP, CyanogenMod, PAC ROM, MIUI, Paranoid Android or Illusion ROMS.

Now all that remains is to complete the following few steps:

  2. Open the “Wipe” tab;
  3. Delete the “/data” and “/system” partitions;
  4. Go to the main menu and enter the “Install” tab;
  5. Specify the location of the firmware file;
  6. Wait until the process is completed;
  7. Ready.

For example, when a gadget uses a modification of Android 2, it is not always possible to update to 4, since this requires the device developer to make special changes to the software.

Also, users who use programs on their device that are not supported by current software modifications are in no hurry to switch to a more recent version.

After an update, utilities are often additionally installed that the device owner does not need, but only clutter up the device’s memory. Such applications are protected from uninstallation by the user.

Updating software and a large number of applications in it leads to increased traffic consumption, and therefore financial resources owner of the mobile device.

It is supported by all modern Windows versions and allows you to update Android via PC without much hassle.

TouchScreenTune app optimizes sensitivity and responsiveness touch screen. It will be especially useful in the following cases:...

The market for mobile products is structured in such a way that as new versions of the Android OS are released, smartphone manufacturing companies introduce their support into their own, both recently released and already proven models. How does this work? At the time of purchasing a new mobile product, it is available basic version system installed by default. After some period of time, Google releases a new Android release. After six months or a little later, depending on the geographic region, when the new version becomes tested and stable, you can install it on your smart phone. As a result, you get a new, modern interface, support for new applications and more settings and customization. In this material we have compiled a detailed guide for you, how to update Android on your phone.

What is a software update on Android and why is it needed?

You need to be aware that as a result of an update or rollback operating system all data stored on the phone will be irretrievably lost. Be sure to do backups all the data you need ( address book, notes, photos) to a secure external storage device before taking any of the steps in this guide. It could be external storage, hard drive on a PC (as a last resort, a memory card, but not advisable).

One more nuance. Since updating the operating system will take some time (from 5 to 10 minutes, and sometimes more), be sure to charge the phone to 70-80% of the total battery capacity so that the update procedure is not interrupted due to problems with the phone’s battery.

Automatic Android update

Here we go to the “Software Update” item. On your device, this section may be located somewhere else, so you may have to go through the settings.

Now tap on the “Update” button, having previously set the option to download updates only via Wi-Fi, so that the update does not “eat up” all your money from your account.

Option in the settings menu to automatically update the OS

When all the data from the manufacturer’s server has been downloaded, in the menu that appears, tap the “Install” button and wait until the device reboots.

Since using the method described above you can only update your mobile device to the minor release build, you should also use special utility from the manufacturer (for Samsung gadgets it’s Kies, for LG it’s PC Suite, etc.) or updated “over the air” (most of the companies that produce smartphones or tablets have such a proprietary feature).

Latest Android update, if it is already available on the server, you can download it to your device at any time using just such a program.

Manually updating Android firmware

Almost all service centers use this method, but we can easily update ourselves, using exclusively available means. Applies to update system application Odin. You can download it on many web resources (for example, on the same w3bsit3-dns.com). Using this technique, you can only install a new version of the official firmware, but not a custom one.

1. download the Odin program. We need version 1.83 (or later) - it is very popular among technicians and is suitable for the vast majority of products

2. find and download an archive on the Internet with the firmware we need. After extracting the contents from the archive (you will first need to download the archiver for Android), you should have 3 files: PIT, PDA and CSC

3. connect the smartphone to the PC. It is critical that the phone is detected correctly in Windows

4. launch Odin. If the device connection was successful, the port name in the program will light up in yellow in the corresponding field

Indication of successful connection of the device to the PC for updating in Odin

5. turn off the mobile device and switch it to Download Mode by pressing the home, power and volume down keys at the same time

6. Confirm activation of Download Mode by holding down the “Volume Up” key

7. in the central Odin window, select the downloaded files so that they correspond to the PIT, PDA and CSC objects

8. In Odin, click the Start button and wait until all files are updated.

If the Android system update went smoothly, a field with the inscription PASS in green will appear on the application screen.

On the test phone, this function was available in the “Backup and reset” menu in the “Personal data” category.

Section in the options menu designed to reset the device to its factory state

  1. We go to this section of the menu and stop at the “Reset settings” item.
  2. A form pops up warning you that all data from the gadget will be deleted. If the backups are already saved in a safe place, feel free to click “Reset phone settings”.
  3. The phone begins to reboot. After 5-10 minutes it will boot again, with a clean base system on board.

Method 2 - reset to factory settings (hard reset)

  1. turn off the phone/tablet
  2. simultaneously press and hold down the “Volume Up”, “Home” (bottom center) and “Power” buttons. The Recovery menu opens.
  3. Using the volume keys, check the “wipe data/factory reset” item.
  4. press the power key to confirm your choice
  5. in the next menu you need to confirm your decision. Select “Yes – Delete all user data” using the keys designed to adjust the volume
  6. Press the power button again. The main menu appears in front of you again
  7. Using the power key, select “reboot system now”

Everything is ready. Next time the factory version of the OS will boot.

How to rollback if a custom version of Android is installed (Cyanogenmod, MIUI, Paranoid Android)?

If you installed a custom ROM, return official firmware can be done the same way manual update, - using the one already mentioned in the review Odin programs. First, you will have to search the Internet for files with the firmware you need, individually suitable for your smart model. Perhaps the best resource for searching is the mobile portal 4PDA; here you can find any firmware for almost every phone model.

  1. connect the mobile device to the PC
  2. launch Odin
  3. turn off the phone and enter it into Download Mode. To do this, press the home key, power key and volume down key.
  4. when the phone is booted, press the volume up key to activate Download Mode
  5. on the main Odin form, select the downloaded files as a match for PIT, PDA and CSC
  6. in Odin, click the Start button and wait until all the files are updated.

The successful completion of the rollback procedure will be indicated by a green field with the inscription PASS at the top.

We will tell you in the article how to update the Android version on your phone to the latest version! Many Android smartphones and tablets receive regular updates. The only exceptions are devices from little-known Chinese companies and very budget devices.

Why update Android

Some users of devices running this OS are wondering: should they update Android, and if so, why do it? This is highly recommended, since installing updates:

  • fixes security issues;
  • improves system performance and stability;
  • brings new features.

As a result, after updating, the device is less susceptible to security threats, runs faster, and provides better usability.

You can check this in three ways:

  1. on the official website of the device manufacturer;
  2. on specialized forums (for example, w3bsit3-dns.com);
  3. by launching the application to update the device over the Air.

How to find out the current Android version of your device

To check which OS version is currently installed, do the following:

  1. go to the settings menu;
  2. scroll through the items to the last one - which is called “About phone” and tap on it;
  3. Opposite “Android version” you can see the one present on the device.

Important: many Chinese manufacturers create their systems based on Google's OS. Therefore, in addition to the version of the “Green Robot”, you can also find out about the version of the operating system itself from the specified menu. Often, after an update, it is the latter that changes, while the former remains the same.

Why doesn't Android update automatically on my phone?

Most often this happens for three reasons:

  • First– the manufacturer did not provide for the possibility of an update over the air. In this case, the system does not have a proprietary application and the standard one has been removed, which checks, downloads, unpacks and replaces the corresponding files.
  • Second– the corresponding function is disabled. To activate it, you need to go to the program that performs the update, find this option there and enable it. About activation standard tool Android updates, in turn, can be read in the “Over the Air” subsection.
  • Third– the software updater is prohibited from accessing the Internet. Many phones/tablets can be used to block network access using a built-in application.

It should be specially mentioned that automatic update It may not happen because the device manufacturer simply does not release updates.

Updating a system is not reinstalling it. Therefore, after it, absolutely all the data that was present on the phones at the time of initialization of the process in question is saved.

Moreover, 90% of users have contacts synchronized with the Google cloud. The only exceptions are those who intentionally disabled this opportunity or uses a device that completely lacks services from the specified search giant.

That is, when synchronization is enabled, contacts will be saved even if the OS is completely reinstalled. They will even appear on another phone if you log in with your phone. account GMAIL.

Methods to update the Android version

There are three ways to install updates: over the air - the easiest, through a PC - the most complex, using applications - very unsafe.

Updating Android over the air

In order for the device to receive updates over the air, it is necessary that the developer provide for this possibility. It, in turn, is available in almost all devices over $100.

Over-the-air update involves checking for the latest patches via the Internet (wi-fi) using the phone's built-in tools. If they exist, then special program downloads them to the device and replaces the files present in the system partition with those located in the downloaded archives.

However, the presence of the corresponding opportunity does not mean that updates will come forever. Typically, device support period is 3 years, and for some manufacturers it is even less.

If Android is “clean”, then you can try to update it through the settings menu. To do this, you need to go to the “About phone” section, select “System update” there and switch the switch to the active position.

Update Android via PC

To update via computer you need:

  • drivers for mobile devices;
  • special utility;
  • archive with update.

Also, before this, you may need to unlock the bootloader, which is done through the developer menu.

  • connect your phone/tablet via USB to your PC;
  • run the patcher program;
  • select the archive with updates;
  • press the START button (most often it is called that way).
  • The specific steps that need to be performed in this case depend on the phone model. To obtain the appropriate instructions, you must refer to the manufacturer’s official website or to the relevant topics on the forums.

    It should be noted that you can install updates from the archive directly from your phone. But this will require the TWRP bootloader.

    Update Android using apps

    This is the worst way to get updates. Serious companies do not develop such programs, and those applications that exist were created by someone unknown. This method should be used as a last resort.

    The principle of working with such applications in most cases is as follows:

    • downloading and launching the corresponding application;
    • selecting a device model (if it is not detected automatically);
    • Click on the Update button and wait for the update process to complete.

    The easiest way to install patches on the Green Robot is to run the OTA update utility (OTA utility is standard application for updates provided by the manufacturer). If Android is “clean”, then you need to go to settings, then select “System”, and then “System update”. If the switch present there is active, then, provided there is a connection to the Network, information about patches that have not yet been downloaded will appear on the screen. To install them, you will need to click on the checkbox and agree to download and install the files.

    If the manufacturer has provided its own program for updating the system, then you need to run it and follow the instructions it offers.
    If, after opening, it has not loaded information about the packages, you will need to click on the button with the image of an arrow wrapped in a circle. After this, all that remains is to agree to install updates if they were found.

    How to update Android on a tablet

    How to update Android on a tablet is no different from how to update Android on a phone - these are almost identical devices, just different sizes.

    Everything is quite simple, the procedure is as follows:

    1. Download the update and save it on your phone;
    2. Turn off the phone and use the key combination (see the combination on the website of the manufacturer of your device) to go to the engineering menu;
    3. Find the “Apply update” item and indicate the location of the downloaded update - you’re done.

    If OTA does not work, then you can update via your computer. For information on how to do this, read the “Via PC” subsection.

    Android custom firmware update: where to download, how to install

    Attention: It will not be possible to update a custom OS system; a complete reinstallation of the system will be required.

    As you already understand, updating the system with custom firmware will not work, but for complete flashing The device will need to obtain RTH rights. Manufacturers mobile phones It is highly discouraged to use custom firmware, much less reflash devices yourself.

    In what cases is it not necessary to update Android?

    There are several such cases:

    • The phone already has the latest firmware.
    • The operation of the device is completely satisfactory and there is no valuable information on the phone.
    • Your phone is old and will most likely slow down a lot after the update.
    • You can't connect to wi-fi, and mobile traffic is expensive.

    How to disable Android updates

    This can be done either by changing the position of the switch in the “About phone” – “System update” menu to inactive, or by disabling the corresponding option in the proprietary application.

    How to roll back an Android update to a previous version

    In fact, there is no way to do this. However, return old system it's still possible. To do this, you need to reflash the device. But you will need to find the firmware that matches the previous version.

    You can also reset the firmware to factory firmware, for this:

    1. Find the “Privacy” item in the settings (parameters) menu;
    2. Click the “Reset settings” item in the “Reset settings” tab and wait for the device to restart.

    Be sure to make a backup of your data, as after a rollback they will be erased from the device’s memory.

    Third-party programs for updating Android

    Now let’s briefly look at the option of how to update Android on your phone/tablet using special programs.

    The first of them is Android Update Manager. Through it you can update Android for free. Its advantage is that it allows you to roll out custom firmware. That is, even if the developer no longer supports the device, through AUM you can install a more recent version of the software on it than provided.

    Upgrade for Android Go Next– through this application you can familiarize yourself with the features different versions OS for a specific phone and install them. However, of course, not all devices have new versions.

    If you want to update Android as quickly and easily as possible, it is not recommended to use any applications. This is due to the fact that it is far from a fact that the updates will install normally, and if this happens, you will have to remove the phone from the “bricked” state.

    As you can see, there are many ways to install updates. However, it is better to use either those provided by the device manufacturer, or popular, proven ones.

    Hello, dear readers of the blog site. Have you ever wondered why browser developers constantly release new versions of their creations that eliminate discovered vulnerabilities and improve functionality?

    That is why you and I are constantly concerned with the question - how to update your browser. Although lately the update is almost always carried out automatically in background(unbeknownst to us). However, nothing is perfect in the world, and it would be a good idea to look at the current version of your Internet browser and, if necessary, manually initiate the update process if the browser has stopped updating automatically. How to do this, read below.

    How to update Google Chrome

    Google Chrome on at the moment is one of the most popular browsers in the world. And this despite the fact that he was one of the very last to be born (you can). Personally, I use it to work with websites, because it is ideal for this.

    For example, each of the tabs in Google Chrome is independent system process and its freezing will not cause the entire browser to freeze, which is great when working with articles in . In addition, if your computer suddenly freezes or reboots, everything you wrote will be restored after re-opening the browser. There are, which you can read about at the link provided.

    But let's return to the topic of our article - how to update this browser? To do this, you will need to click on the icon with three horizontal stripes located in the upper right corner and select the item from the drop-down menu “About the Google Chrome browser”:

    As I mentioned above, this browser is updated automatically when you restart it (close or open), but if you haven’t closed it for a very long time (for example, if your computer has not been turned off for weeks or months), then you can get information about the appearance of new versions from background color changes, which displays the icon shown in the screenshot with three horizontal stripes:

    So, after selecting the item “About Google browser Chrome" you will see a window where the current version of the browser will be compared with the one that is currently available on the update server.

    At the end of the process, you will see a button appear to restart the browser and apply the downloaded updates:

    You can achieve the same effect by simply closing the program and launching it again. This way you can make sure that you have all the security updates and additional functionality.

    However, some kind of failure may occur during which communication with the update server will not occur. How to fix this? Come in to the official Google Chrome website and for your operating system (it will be determined automatically based on the data received from your computer):

    If the version of your OS was not determined correctly, then use the “Download Chrome for another platform” button located just below. By the way, if you are a big fan of the latest updates and mules, then there is an opportunity for you download the beta version of the browser engine, which is the flagship at the moment, but is not yet one hundred percent stable and tested.

    After downloading, to activate the update process If you have already installed the browser version, it will be enough to close Chrome and install the latest one current version from the resulting distribution. All available settings, passwords, etc. must be preserved. But just in case, before updating, as was shown in the article linked to.

    Therefore, due to the impossibility Opera updates from version 12 until later you will have to go to their official website and:

    This browser in itself is worthy of special attention, because based on the same engine as Chrome, it managed to acquire a number of unique functions, which I wrote about in. There is also (voice assistant).

    How to update Internet Explorer

    This browser differs significantly from those described above primarily in that it is part of the operating room Windows systems . Moreover, not for every type of Windows you will be able to update Internet Explorer to the highest possible version (currently it is 12). Why is this so? Well, Microsoft is probably trying to stimulate sales of its new operating systems in such a clumsy way.

    For example, judging by the screenshot below, for my beloved Vista I can only update to Internet Explorer 9 (with the second service pack), although the newest version of this browser dates back to number 12 (it’s a shame, but not at all enough to change the OS, because I practically don’t use IE):

    However, not everyone will have such a sad situation, because for older Windows versions(7, 8 and 10) an update to version 12 of Internet Explorer is available. What will need to be done for this? Yes, actually, just a little - and download its distribution.

    As predicted, Internet Explorer 9 doesn't offer anything above for me, but you might have better luck. Go for it.

    Good luck to you! See you soon on the pages of the blog site

    Google releases major Android OS updates to a new version every year. Users of the Nexus (and now Pixel) series devices receive the latest firmware releases promptly and quickly, which can be installed without the need for a computer. However, other manufacturers are in no hurry (and often do not have time) to quickly create OS builds adapted for their devices, and updates have to wait for months. Some companies don’t bother at all about releasing new firmware; users of their devices find themselves hostage old version operating system. However, most of these problems are easily solved with a little effort. How to install a new one Android version, our material will tell.

    How to update Android using standard means

    The Android OS functionality provides the ability to receive updates from the manufacturer’s server via the Internet. The item responsible for receiving updates is usually located in the settings menu, next to the phone information. Depending on the system modification, appearance This item may differ, but the functions are the same everywhere. This is what the update menu looks like pure Android 5.1 Lolipop (top item).

    And this is the appearance of the entrance to the update submenu in MIUI8 OS from XIaomi (bottom of the screenshot).

    After entering the submenu, the system will contact the manufacturer’s server and check if a new firmware version has appeared. If it is available, the phone will report this and begin downloading it. After this, the installation will occur (it is advisable to charge the battery to 50% or higher) and the device will reboot.

    Unfortunately, it is not always possible to update Android on a tablet or phone in this way. Even if new firmware has already been released - manufacturers do not send the update to everyone at once, since their servers may not be able to withstand the heavy load. Sometimes it takes days or even weeks for an update to reach the end user. However, in this case, you can outsmart the developers and avoid the wait.

    How to update Android if there are no updates

    Before you update Android, if there are no updates, forcefully, you need to make sure that only you do not have updates, and that other owners of a smartphone or tablet of this model have already downloaded the firmware. To do this, you can visit the profile forum (XDA, w3bsit3-dns.com, forum of fans of your trademark etc.) and see if there are any messages about the release of updates. If they are, you need to find the update file for your smartphone. Make sure that the version matches: many devices are produced in several modifications, the firmware for which is incompatible! When the firmware file is found, you need to download the Android update and save it to the phone’s memory or to a flash drive. After this, go to the above system update item and click the ellipsis icon. On stock Android 5.1 the additional options menu looks like this.

    The menu interface for selecting update options over the air and on MIUI is implemented in a similar way.

    In the first case, you can update Android from a flash drive using the “Local updates” item, in the second case, “Select firmware file”. Captions may vary depending on the translator, but the general meaning of the title should be approximately the same. After selecting the firmware file, the system will check its integrity and compatibility with the smartphone, reboot the system and install the update. Again, this must be done with a charged battery to avoid sudden shutdown of the device.

    How to install a new version of Android if there are no official updates at all

    If the manufacturer “forgot” about customers and does not release firmware updates for old devices, there is still a chance to get a fresh OS. There are many enthusiasts developing alternative Android builds for many smartphones. The most famous is the CyanogenMod project, the OS build of which is installed on more than 15 million devices.

    Also, quite often, alternative OS builds are made by small groups of enthusiasts or individuals, using as a basis the firmware from another similar model equipped with a more recent version of the OS. However, before you update Android on your tablet or smartphone to such a build, you need to take into account that it may be unstable. The fact is that it is very difficult to assemble 100% working firmware alone, because such assemblies often have bugs and shortcomings.

    To update the Android version to an unofficial build, you need to follow the firmware instructions for your specific smartphone model (for different phones the flashing procedure is different). The easiest way is to install the update from the Recovery menu. First you need to download Android update and save it to a memory card. To enter recovery, you need to turn off your smartphone, hold down the volume up and power buttons at the same time, and wait to enter the menu. Sometimes, in addition to the above two, you need to hold down the home button under the screen (for Samsung smartphones). To update Android, you need to find an item in the menu containing something like “Install from sdcard” (navigation is carried out with the volume rocker, selection is made by briefly pressing the power button), find the firmware on the flash drive and install it.

    Sometimes, to flash the firmware, you first need to install an alternative recovery menu, for example, TWRP, since the native one may not support the installation official updates. Once the Android update is installed, you need to select “Wipe data & cache” and reboot. Before updating in this way, carefully read the instructions so as not to break your phone or tablet.

    Another way to install official and unofficial updates Android firmware- via computer.
