Record your game

Recording clips

You can record video fragments for future clips in two ways: in repeat mode or manually, and the process of editing videos is not limited to the usual camera angles. You will have the opportunity to shoot from all viewing angles, except for those with restrictions.
Pay attention to the prompt that pops up while recording. This will indicate whether there are restrictions on different camera angles for your clip. All videos with restrictions have a special mark that you will see during installation.

Recording Modes

To record in repeat mode, you need to simultaneously hold down the Alt and F2 keys, for manual recording - Alt+F1.

How does recording work in repeat mode?

This mode is designed specifically for video recording of game events that occurred earlier. Its activation is accompanied by regular recording of individual fragments of the game in background without saving. To save a fragment, you need to select the event you are interested in and press the appropriate key combination Alt+F1 and “Save record”.

How do you record a video manually?

You can start recording at any stage of the game. Initially, it will only happen in the background. The most important points You can save an unlimited number of files by pressing Alt (on the left side of the keyboard) and F1 to save or Alt+F3 to cancel. In the future, all fragments of the video will be located in the order in which you recorded them.

If canceled (Alt+F3), all unsaved material will be deleted.

Clip information

  • To save the finished video on your computer’s hard drive, you need to follow these steps: “Pause Menu”ð”Settings” and select “Rockstar Editor”.
  • Saved clips are automatically named in date and number format: “month/year Clip XXXX”.
  • Videos created in repeat mode will contain fragments of different durations: for bright scenes - about 30 seconds, for calm scenes - up to 90 seconds.
  • If there is not enough space to store the rollers, you need to free it up. To do this, in the “Pause Menu” select “Rockstar Editor”, and in it - “Clip Editing”, where you can delete all old unnecessary videos.

Markers are intended for setting clip parameters, for example, effects, different shooting angles, playback speed. They can be installed anywhere on the video.

Use the mouse wheel or the Left and Right arrows to scroll through your clip and find the best places to place marks. Using the arrows, you can manage the label menu and make appropriate changes.

Setting a mark occurs by pressing the "M" key in the place you want to mark. After this, a window with all available editing options will appear in the upper left part of the screen. In it you can set video parameters, change depth of field, playback speed, shooting angles and others. This will allow you to create a truly unique and engaging video.

You can set the duration of the clip yourself by selecting the start and end marks and moving the cursor outside the video.

Standard label properties

Each new mark carries information about the previous mark on the scale, if there is one. Setting the final label is the end result, all initial labels will not affect it.

If you want to add a specific visual effect, which will be applied throughout your clip, apply it only to the start label.

If you want to change the settings of subsequent cues, use a simplified method: after making changes to the menu of one cue, press the “Tab” key, this will automatically open the menu of the next cue.

Anchors

An anchor will allow you to place text or sound; you can enable it for any label.

Types of anchors:

  1. Enabled Anchor - The anchor will be displayed on the timeline and all options will be available for editing.
  2. Disabled Anchor - Editing options remain available, but the anchor will not be displayed on the scale.
  3. Exclusive - Once an exclusive anchor is installed, any changes to the label settings will not be possible, since this action turns the label into an anchor. On the timeline, such an anchor is indicated in yellow.

Cameras

The camera angles in the video can be changed in almost all cases, with the exception of those when, for example, the recording mode is made from the first person. In order to check whether the function of changing angles is available, you need to go to the editing menu.

The following types of cameras can be used to change angles:

  • Gaming - repeating camera movements while recording a video.
  • Free - allow you to freely move the camera around the available gaming locations. To capture your subject, select the “Camera Target” option. To ensure smooth movement - “Move with a purpose.” To create dynamic transitions when changing angles, it is better to use the “Transition Modes” option.

There is also the ability to use preset angles, allowing you to shoot the character close and far in all projections.

To convey special effects such as an explosion, accident or powerful blow as accurately as possible, use the “Camera Shake” option, which must first be configured.

Effects

Use a variety of effects, adjusting their intensity yourself. You have options for brightness, contrast, saturation, vignetting and intensity.

Depth of field

Depth of field is a special function that allows you to adjust the focus on a specific object or character (focus point). In this case, you can adjust the intensity and select the desired type of focus.
You can adjust the depth of field by enabling this option in the “Pause Menu”, but DirectX 11 must be running. In the “Special Effects Settings” sub-item, select one of the three required levels: “High”, “Very High”, “Highest degree” .

Sound options

Adjust the volume of your chosen effects in the Sound Options menu. Adjusting the sound intensity will help to powerfully highlight the dramatic effect in the video or, conversely, reduce tension.

Speed

Experiment with acceleration and deceleration effects both for the entire video and for its individual fragments (within selected marks).

Video icons

Capture thumbnail images at any point and use them later on the project timeline.

Navigation

To change the location of the mark on the scale, go to the mark menu and select the “Position” option. To save all changed labels, press F5. Pressing Esc will take you back to the Timeline page, and pressing this key again will quickly take you to the Main Menu page.

  • GTAV soundtracks with 5 sound intensity levels.
  • Musical compositions from the GTAV radio station (songs and advertisement melodies). The duration of the sound must be at least 30 seconds.

In order to determine which type is suitable for your video, select the melody you like and drag it to the timeline by moving the cursor while holding the left mouse button or using the Ctrl+V combination. To synchronize the musical sound, use the “To the next measure” option, where you can also edit the duration of the composition, trimming it to the desired size.

Microphone type

Your clip can sound completely different if you make adjustments to the Microphone Type options. For this, 4 options are offered: “microphone on camera” and “on chain”, “default” and “cinematic”.

Adding text

In the main menu, select the “Add text” option, give it the required properties: color, size, font, duration, position, saturation.

In order to change the name of the project or make several copies of it, you need to use the “Save project as” option. To save periodically, do not forget to use the F5 key. In this case, you will be sure that the work will be saved at all stages.

Exporting your project

After completing the project, you must select the “Export” option and specify the parameters for frame rate and bitrate. The export process takes slightly longer than the length of the video itself. As the clips appear on the screen, you will be able to watch the process, but the sound will be muted.
Once the export is complete, the clip will be in the editor menu, where you can view it in full screen mode, and from where it can subsequently be moved to a YouTube page or opened for viewing by friends in the Rockstar Games Social Club.

  • If there is space to store a new video, it must be freed. To do this, in the pause menu, select the “Settings” item and the “Rockstar Editor” sub-item. In it you need to select the “Clip Editing” item, in which you can delete all unnecessary videos.

Main menu

Menu

There are six items in the main menu of the Rockstar video editor:

  • “Create Project”: here you can create a completely new project using previously recorded clips;
  • “Load project”: this item allows you to load a previously created project for editing;
  • Director Mode: This is the easiest way to launch Director Mode;
  • “Clip editing”: here you can manage previously recorded clips, including deleting unnecessary ones;
  • “Video gallery”: this item allows you to view finished videos - both those that were uploaded to the Rockstar Games Social Club and those that were posted on YouTube;
  • “Training”: launches the Rockstar Editor training mode.

Creating a new project

To create a new project, select the “Create a new project” option, and then click on the “Add images” sub-item. After this, you need to select the videos that will be used in the project and place them on the timeline. After the video is placed, you need to double-click on each of the clips to edit, or press the Enter key.

To add videos to the timeline, use the Ctrl+X keys. To remove videos from it, just press the Del key. And to create a copy of a particular video, you need to select it and press Ctrl+C.

Editing Clips

Control Panel

The control panel is at the top right of the screen. The panel shows the current time of the video and its total duration. There are also buttons for going to the end and beginning of the video, rewind, play and pause buttons.

It is noteworthy that for users who use a gamepad, the control panel will not appear.

Tags

The main purpose of tags is to configure individual clip parameters, such as virtual camera angles, effects, and playback speed. You can place tags anywhere in the video.

To scroll through the clip and select the optimal places to place marks, you can use the Left and Right arrows on the keyboard or the mouse wheel. The label menu is controlled using the arrow keys to make appropriate changes.

To put a mark, just press the “M” key while selecting the place you want to mark. A small window will appear in the upper left part of the screen with all the options available for editing. Here you can set the necessary video parameters, change the playback speed, depth of field, change the angle of the virtual camera and change other options. It is the use of all these features that allows you to create an interesting and unique video.

The length of the output video can be set manually by selecting the start and end marks and then moving the cursor outside the clip.

Standard label properties

Each of the new marks on the timeline, in addition to its own properties, also carries information about the previous one, if any. In this case, setting the final label is the final result; all initial labels will not have any effect on it.

If you want to add a specific visual effect, the effect of which will extend throughout the entire duration of the video, it is enough to apply it only to the starting mark.

If you need to make changes to the settings of subsequent labels, it is best to use a simplified method: after changes are made to the menu of one label, you must press the “Tab” key, which will automatically open the menu of the next label.

Anchors

Anchors allow you to place sound or text in a video, and you can enable them for any of the tags.

Anchors are:

  • enabled: such anchors are displayed on the timeline, with all parameters available for editing;
  • disabled: anchors are not displayed on the timeline, but editing options are available as in the case of enabled anchors;
  • exclusive: after installing such anchors, making any changes to the tag settings will be impossible, since in fact installing such an anchor turns the tag into an anchor. On the timeline, such anchors are indicated in yellow.

Cameras

The angle of the virtual camera in a clip can be changed in almost all cases. However, if you are recording from a first-person perspective, changing the camera angle will not be possible. To check whether the function of changing the virtual camera angle is available, you should go to the editing menu.

The following types of cameras can be used to change angles:

  • free: they allow you to move the camera across all available game spaces. To capture your subject, select the “Camera Target” option. The “Move with a purpose” option is responsible for ensuring smooth movement. To create dynamic transitions when changing angles, select the “Transition Modes” option;
  • gaming: they repeat all the movements of the virtual camera during video recording.

In addition, the editor allows you to use a number of preset angles, which allow you to shoot an object both remotely and close-up in any projection.

To convey special effects as accurately as possible: accidents, powerful impacts or explosions, it is best to use the “Camera Shake” option. But it is worth keeping in mind that this parameter requires preliminary configuration.

Effects

The Rockstar Video Editor allows you to use a variety of effects by manually adjusting their intensity. In particular, the user can adjust parameters such as contrast, brightness, intensity, saturation and vignetting.

Depth of field

The depth of field option allows you to adjust the focus on a specific point or subject, be it a character or some object. In this case, the user can manually select the required type of focus and adjust its intensity.

You can change the depth of field by turning on the corresponding option by entering the pause menu. However, it will not be available on all PCs - the game must run in DirectX 11 mode. To set the required depth of field level, you need to go to “Settings”, then go to the “Special Effects Settings” sub-item and select one of the available levels: “High” ", "Very high", "Highest degree".

Sound options

Volume selected for video sound effects can be configured through the “Sound Options” option. So, for example, here you can adjust the intensity of the sound, which will reduce the tension or, on the contrary, add drama, highlighting the sound certain moment video.

Speed

The audio speed option controls the playback speed of the selected audio fragment. To achieve the best results, you can experiment with the available slowdown and speedup effects. These effects can be applied to individual video fragments within user-selected tags, or to the entire video.

Video icons

Thumbnails of images can be captured at any convenient point for further use on the timeline of the edited project.

Navigation

To change the location of a particular mark on the timeline, you need to go to its menu and select “Position”. To save all marks that have been changed, just press the F5 key, while to return to the timeline page you need to press the Esc key. Pressing this key again will exit to the main menu.

Sound and text

Adding sound

Once the necessary clips have been added and edited, you can add music to the resulting video. The option to overlay music can be found in the main menu. The parameter provides two options for overlaying sound as musical accompaniment:

  • musical compositions from GTAV radio stations, including songs, as well as advertisement melodies lasting 30 seconds or more;
  • soundtracks from GTAV. In this case, the user will be able to select the intensity of the musical accompaniment (there are five options).

To determine which of the proposed types is best suited for a particular video, you need to select the composition you like and transfer it to the timeline. This can be done either by dragging (hover the cursor over the composition, hold down the left mouse button, and then drag it to the desired location), or by copying and then pasting using the Ctrl + V command. To synchronize the sound of the music with the video, you can use the “To the next measure” option, where you can edit the duration of the selected composition, cutting it to the desired duration.

Microphone type

The sound in a video can change significantly depending on where the virtual microphone is placed. This will be especially noticeable on surround sound systems. To adjust the location of the microphone that “catches” game sounds, you need to use the “Microphone Type” option. This option provides four settings: “default”, “microphone on camera”, “cinematic”, and also “on chain”

Adding text

To add text to a clip, you need to select the appropriate option in the editor menu - “Add text”, and then set all the necessary parameters, such as font, size, color, position, saturation and duration.

Project Preview

To evaluate the finished video in full screen mode, you can use the “Preview” option, and this can be done even before exposure. You can find the above option in the main menu.

Saving and Exporting

Saving a project

To change the name of the project, or make several copies of it, you must use the “Save project as” option. If you just need periodic saving directly during editing, you can simply press the F5 key. This will help save the project at all stages of work.

Project export

After the project is completed, you should select the “Export” option, and then set the necessary parameters: bitrate and frame rate. It is worth keeping in mind that exporting, as a rule, takes longer than the length of the video. You can watch the process thanks to the appearance of clips on the screen, but the sound will be turned off - you can listen to the sound only after the export is complete.

Once the export process is completed, the finished video will be available in the editor menu. You can watch it here in full screen, and also post it on Rockstar Games Social Club or YouTube.

Director Mode

Review

“Director Mode” allows you to create full-fledged videos, the main characters of which can be any characters from the GTA V plot, including animals. To unlock new actors, you will have to travel a lot throughout Los Santos and Blaine County.

This mode allows the user to completely manually configure all scene parameters: change the script, change weather conditions and time of day, add new lines, and so on.

“Director Mode” gives everyone the opportunity to try themselves in the role of a director, and the only limitation is the user’s imagination. Of course, all settings and actions will be carried out in the Rockstar Editor video editor, however, there are much more opportunities for creating truly interesting video in this mode than when filming gameplay.

  • in the pause menu: to launch this menu, you need to press the Esc key while in the game. Next, from the main menu you need to go to the Rockstar Editor (we described how to do this above), and then select the “Director Mode” sub-item;

Character selection

The character will be transferred to the point in the game world where it was made last transition in the pause menu.

Change your appearance

The “Appearance” option allows you to edit the appearance of the “actors” - change skin color and hairstyle, add beards and mustaches to characters, change the color of animals.

Using a short list

The easiest way to work with characters is to use a short list, where you can add up to ten characters. To call up the list, you need to press the Tab key while working in Director Mode. Now all previously added characters will be available in the director’s menu, so they can be instantly changed without going to the selection page. It is worth keeping in mind that when a character is driving a vehicle, it cannot be changed. It is also not possible to change characters directly during recording.

Settings menu

To adjust certain parameters when working in “Director Mode”, you should go to the “Settings” menu. Here you can adjust the following parameters:

  • number of oncoming cars: there are four options to choose from - not at all, few, medium, many;
  • number of pedestrians: as when setting the previous parameter, the user will be offered four options - not at all, few, medium, many;
  • weather: clear weather, rain, thunderstorm, cloudiness, haze, smog, fog, and, most interestingly, Christmas mode;
  • time of day: in this option you can choose from eight options - dawn, morning, noon, day, sunset, twilight, midnight, night;
  • wanted level: this option can be turned off completely, or it can be adjusted within the usual framework for the game: standard, low, medium or high level.

You can also adjust parameters such as the opening of restricted areas, invulnerability and others.

All of the above options can be changed without leaving the director menu.

Cheat codes

Without exception, all cheat codes can be successfully used in “Director Mode” - they will help you create truly exciting videos and save a lot of time, since the necessary vehicles You no longer have to search all over the map.
