Rockstar Editor is a powerful multifunctional toolkit for creating and editing videos on the Grand Theft Auto 5 engine that allows you to create music videos, trailers and even entire movies.

Rockstar Editor is a multifunctional set of tools that allow you to record and process video: users can use the repeat mode, import all recorded clips into a separate project, collect all their recordings into a single library, edit recorded clips, changing the angle of the virtual camera. The editor also allows you to publish your videos on YouTube or post to the Rockstar Games Social Club.

Game recording

Recording Clips

The user can record a video, which will be further used in the clip, in two ways: manually or in repeat mode. At the same time, the video editing process is not limited to traditional camera angles - shooting is allowed from all possible angles. Nevertheless, there are angles that are set to limitations - you need to pay attention to the tooltips that pop up during video recording, which indicate whether there are any restrictions on the viewing angles of a virtual camera for a particular clip. Limitations can also be noticed during editing - all videos with restrictions have a special label.

Recording Modes

To start recording in repeat mode, press Alt + F2, to start recording in manual mode, press Alt + F1.

Repeat Recording

Record mode in snooze mode is specifically designed for video recording of game events that have already occurred. Activation of this mode is accompanied by the recording of individual fragments of gameplay without saving and in the background. To save a fragment, select the event, and then press Alt + F1 and select the “Save Record” option.

Manual Recording

This mode can be activated at any stage of the game. Initially, recording is done exclusively in the background. At the same time, to save the most interesting moments you need to press Alt + F1 to cancel the save - Alt + F3. This will delete all unsaved fragments. You can save an unlimited number of fragments in this mode. All stored materials will be arranged in the order in which they were recorded.

Clip Information

  • to save the finished video to your PC’s hard drive, you need to go to the pause menu, select the “Settings” item, and then select the “Rockstar Editor” sub-item. When saving videos, the name is automatically assigned in the format of the date (month and year) and clip number;
  • videos created in the viewing mode may contain fragments of various durations - for the most vivid scenes, the duration will be about 30 seconds, for calmer episodes, the duration will reach 90 seconds;
  • in the event of a place to store a new video, it must be freed. To do this, in the pause menu, select "Settings" and the sub-item "Rockstar Editor". In it, you need to select the item "Editing clips", in which you can delete all unnecessary videos.

Main menu

Menu

In the main menu of the Rockstar video editor, there are six items:

  • “Create a project”: here you can create a completely new project using previously recorded clips;
  • “Upload project”: this item allows you to upload a previously created project for editing;
  • "Director mode": this is the easiest way to start the director mode;
  • “Editing clips”: here you can manage previously recorded clips, including deleting unnecessary ones;
  • “Video Gallery”: this item allows you to view ready-made videos - both those that have been uploaded to the Rockstar Games Social Club, and those that have been uploaded to YouTube;
  • Learning: Launch Rockstar Editor's learning mode.

Create a new project

To create a new project, select the option “Create a new project”, and then click on the sub-item “Add images”. After that, you need to select the clips that will be used in the project, and place them on the timeline. After the video is placed, you must double-click on each of the clips for editing, or press Enter.

To add clips to the timeline, use the Ctrl + X keys. To remove clips from it, just press the Del key. And to create a copy of a particular video, you need to select it and press Ctrl + C.

Editing clips

Control Panel

The control panel is located in the upper right part of the screen. The panel shows the current time of the video and its total duration. There are also buttons for moving to the end and beginning of the clip, buttons for rewinding, playback and pause.

It is noteworthy that for users who use the gamepad, the control panel will not be displayed.

Tags

The main purpose of labels is to configure individual parameters of clips, such as, for example, camera angles, effects, and playback speed. You can place tags anywhere in the video.

To scroll the clip and choose the best places for setting labels, you can use the "Left" and "Right" arrows on the keyboard or mouse wheel. The labels menu is controlled by the arrow keys to make the appropriate changes.

To put a mark, just press the "M" key, choosing the place you want to mark. A small window will appear in the upper left part of the screen with all the options available for editing. Here you can set the necessary video parameters, change the playback speed, depth of field, change the angle of the virtual camera and change other options. It is the use of all these features that allows you to create an interesting and unique video.

The duration of the output video can be set manually - to do this, select the start and end tags, and then move the cursor outside the clip.

Standard Label Properties

Each of the new labels on the timeline, in addition to its own properties, also contains information about the previous one, if any. At the same time, setting the final mark is the final result, all the initial marks will not have any effect on it.

If you want to add some specific visual effect, the effect of which will apply to the entire timing of the video, it is enough to apply it only to the initial mark.

If at the same time you need to make changes to the settings of subsequent labels, it is best to use the simplified method: after changes are made to the menu of any one label, you must press the Tab key, which will automatically entail the opening of the next label menu.

Anchors

Anchors allow you to place sound or text in the video, and you can enable them for any of the tags.

Anchors are:

  • included: such anchors are displayed on the timeline, while all parameters are editable;
  • disabled: anchors on the timeline are not displayed, but editing options, as in the case of enabled anchors, are available;
  • exclusive: after installing such anchors, any changes to the label settings will not be possible, since actually installing such an anchor turns the label into an anchor. On the timeline, such anchors are indicated in yellow.

Cameras

The view of the virtual camera in the clip can be changed in almost all cases. However, if recording is performed in a first-person view, changing the camera angle will not be possible. To check whether the function of changing the angle of the virtual camera is available, you should go to the editing menu.

The following camera types can be used to change the angle:

  • free: they allow you to move the camera across all available game places. To fix the subject, select “Camera target”. The option “Move with a target” is responsible for ensuring smooth movement. To create dynamic transitions during the change of angles, select the "Transition modes" parameter;
  • gaming: they repeat all the movements of the virtual camera during movie recording.

In addition, the editor allows you to use a number of predefined angles that allow you to shoot an object both remotely and nearby in any projection.

For the most accurate transmission of special effects: accidents, powerful blows or explosions, it is best to use the "Camera Shake" option. But it should be borne in mind that this parameter requires preliminary configuration.

Effects

Rockstar video editor allows you to use a variety of effects, manually adjusting their intensity. In particular, the user can adjust parameters such as contrast, brightness, intensity, saturation and vignetting.

Depth of field

The depth of field option allows you to adjust the focus on a specific point, subject, whether it is a character or some kind of subject. In this case, the user can manually select the desired type of focus and adjust its intensity.

You can change the depth of field by enabling the corresponding option by entering the pause menu. However, it will not be available on all PCs - the game should work in DirectX 11. To set the desired level of depth of field, go to "Settings", then go to the "Setting special effects" sub-item and select one of the available levels: "High "," Very high "," Highest degree. "

Sound options

The volume of the sound effects selected for the movie can be adjusted using the “Sound options” option. So, for example, here you can adjust the sound intensity, which will reduce the voltage or, on the contrary, add drama, highlighting a certain moment in the video with sound.

Speed

The sound speed option is responsible for the playback speed of the selected sound fragment. To achieve the best result, you can experiment with the available effects of deceleration and acceleration. These effects can be superimposed both on individual fragments of the video within the framework of user-selected tags, and on the entire video.

Video thumbnails

Thumbnails of images can be fixed at any convenient point for further use on the timeline of the edited project.

Navigation

To change the location of a mark on the timeline, go to its menu and select the item “Position”. To save all the labels that have been changed, just press the F5 key, while to return to the page with the timeline, press the Esc key. Pressing this key again will exit to the main menu.

Sound and text

Adding sound

When the necessary clips are added and edited, music can be added to the resulting video. The music overlay option can be found in the main menu. The parameter provides two options for superimposing sound as musical accompaniment:

  • musical compositions from GTAV radio stations, including songs, as well as melodies of advertisements lasting from 30 seconds;
  • soundtracks from GTAV. In this case, the user will be able to choose the intensity of the sound of the musical accompaniment (five options are provided).

To determine which of the proposed types is best suited for a particular video, you need to select your favorite composition and transfer it to the timeline. You can do this either by dragging and dropping (hover over the composition, holding down the left mouse button and then dragging to the desired location), or by copying and pasting through the command Ctrl + V. To synchronize the sound of the musical accompaniment with the video, you can use the “To the next measure” option, where you can edit the duration of the selected song, cutting it to the desired duration.

Microphone type

The sound in the video can change significantly depending on where the virtual microphone will be located. This will be especially noticeable on surround sound systems. To adjust the location of the microphone that "picks up" game sounds, you must use the "Microphone Type" option. This option provides four settings: “default”, “microphone on camera”, “cinematic”, and also “on chain”

Adding Text

To add text to a clip, you need to select the appropriate option - “Add Text” in the editor’s menu, and then set all the necessary parameters, such as font, size, color, position, saturation and duration.

Project Preview

To evaluate the finished video in full screen mode, you can use the “Preview” option, and you can do this even before the moment of exposure. You can find the above option in the main menu.

Saving and Exporting

Save project

To change the name of the project, or make several copies of it, you must use the option "Save the project as." If you just need to periodically save directly during editing, you can simply press the F5 key. This will help to save the project at all stages of work.

Project Export

After the project is completed, select the “Export” option, and then set the necessary parameters: bitrate and frame rate. It should be borne in mind that exporting, as a rule, takes longer than the movie lasts. The process can be watched due to the appearance of the clips on the screen, but the sound will be muted at the same time - you can listen to the sound only upon completion of the export.

After the export process is completed, the finished video will be available in the editor menu. Here you can watch it in full screen mode, as well as put it in Rockstar Games Social Club or on YouTube.

Director Mode

Overview

"Director mode" allows you to create full-fledged videos, the main characters of which can be any characters from the plot of GTA V, including animals. To unlock new actors, you have to travel a lot throughout Los Santos and Blaine County.

This mode allows the user to fully manually configure all the parameters of the scene: change the scenario, change weather conditions and time of day, add new replicas, and so on.

“Director mode” gives everyone an opportunity to try themselves in the role of director, and only the user's imagination serves as a limitation. Of course, all the settings and actions will be carried out in the Rockstar Editor video editor, however, the possibilities for creating a truly interesting video in this mode are much greater than when shooting the gameplay.

Access

Go to the "Director's Mode", unfortunately, can only be in story mode. At the same time, you can start it in several ways at once:

  • in the pause menu: to start this menu, you need to press the Esc key while in the game. Next, from the main menu you need to go to Rockstar Editor (how to do this, we described above), and then select the sub-item “Director mode”;
  • in the interaction menu: to open this menu, you need to press the M key. In the menu you need to select the item "Director Mode". It should be borne in mind that in order to activate this mode in this way, the character must not have wanted stars and move on foot.

Casting Menu

Character selection

To select an "actor" for a new video, you must open the "Character Menu". As you progress through the plot of GTA V, the player will be available to all new characters, each of which has its own unique features and has certain capabilities. To replace a character, you must select it using the left mouse button, and then confirm the selection by pressing the Enter key. The character will be transferred to that point in the game world at which the last transition to the pause menu was made.

Change in appearance

The “Appearance” option allows you to edit the appearance of the “actors” - change skin color and hairstyle, add beards and mustaches to characters, change the color of animals.

Using a short list

The easiest way to work with characters is to use a short list where you can add up to ten characters. To call up the list, you need to press the Tab key while working in the "Director Mode". Now all previously added characters will be available in the director’s menu, so they can be instantly changed without going to the selection page. It should be borne in mind that when a character controls a vehicle, you cannot change it. Also, changing characters directly during recording is not available.

Settings menu

To adjust certain parameters while working in the "Director's Mode", go to the "Settings" menu. Here you can adjust the following parameters:

  • number of oncoming cars: there are four options to choose from - not at all, small, medium, many;
  • number of pedestrians: as with the previous parameter, the user will be offered four options - not at all, small, medium, many;
  • weather: clear weather, rain, thunderstorm, cloudiness, haze, smog, fog, and, most interesting, Christmas mode;
  • time of day: in this option you can choose from eight options - dawn, morning, noon, day, sunset, twilight, midnight, night;
  • wanted level: this option can be turned off altogether, or adjusted in the usual game framework: standard, low, medium or high.

You can also adjust parameters such as the opening of restricted areas, invulnerability, and others.

All of the above options can be changed without leaving the director’s menu.

Cheat codes

Without exception, all cheat codes can be successfully used in the “Director's Mode” - they will help to create truly fascinating videos and save a lot of time, since the necessary vehicles will no longer have to be searched all over the map.

Upload to YouTube

Immediately after editing the video is completed, the finished video can be transferred from the gallery to the user’s page on YouTube.

If the Open Access and Link Access options are enabled when moving the video to YouTube, the video will also be visible in Rockstar Games Social Club. Enabling the "Limited access" option allows you to control the ability to view the video, allowing only some users to watch it.

Video requirements

  • the name of the video should not include inappropriate words and characters;
  • the minimum duration of a video uploaded to YouTube should be at least 1 second;
  • one video can be downloaded only once (publication of copies of the video with the changed name is prohibited).

Video Metadata

When uploading a video to YouTube, the following metadata can be configured:

  • game name and product name;
  • publication date;
  • platform;
  • upload file size and video duration;
  • short description;
  • label.

User Requirements

  • to upload videos to YouTube, you must log in to your Rockstar Games Social Club account - without authorization, downloading is not possible;
  • you must have a Google account - the account is automatically activated to communicate with YouTube;

  • to upload a video that is longer than 15 seconds, you must have the status of a verified YouTube user;
  • to upload videos to YouTube, the user must not have claims from the administration for violations of the rules in both the Social Club and YouTube, while the accounts in Rockstar Games Social Club and Google must be active.

Running, Man - the first video created in Rockstar Editor

The first video created in the Rockstar Editor video editor in GTA 5 for PC was the work of 8-BIT BASTARD - a short film called Running, Man:

Create, edit and share videos with captured gaming experiences in Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online using the Rockstar editor.

Gameplay record

Record gameplay footage during missions and in free play mode. Use the Manual Recording function to start and stop recording at the touch of a button or save the last frames using the Action Replay function.

Design your own scenes and create unique moments using the Director mode. Choose from hundreds of characters, residents, and even animals present in GTA V single player mode throughout Los Santos and Blaine County to control them yourself. Choose your location, time of day, weather and more yourself.

Use the Project Timeline function to add, organize, coordinate, and sequentially link multiple clips. In addition to providing a visual sequence of clips, the Project Timeline function allows you to watch videos in full screen mode, add text and select a soundtrack from the music collection of GTA 5 radio stations. Create an entire movie with various musical accompaniment for scenes - switch between five intensity levels to easily change the tempo of the scene .

Clip editing mode

Bring life to your project with a huge number of editing options using various camera modes, which allows you to move, change position, use several cameras during shooting, use the camera shake effect, change the depth of field of effects, camera filters, audio mixing settings and much more .

When you finish creating your project, save the PC video to your video clip gallery, and then publish it directly to your YouTube account and Rockstar Games Social Club.

Create, edit and publish videos of your game in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online using the Rockstar editor.

Record Your Game

Start recording fragments of your game manually or in replay mode. As a rule, when editing clips, you are not limited to the usual angles - you will have many options for tools and perspectives at your disposal.

  • When recording, information is displayed on the screen, including whether the clip is subject to restrictions on the viewing angles of the camera. Saved clips with such restrictions are marked with a special message that you see when editing clips.

Recording Modes

While holding ALT, press F1 to record manually or F2 to enable repeat mode.

Manual Recording

During the game, you can turn the recording on and off with the touch of a button. You can not turn it off, then the video will be recorded in the background until you press LEFT ALT and select “Save Record” or “Cancel Record”. During editing, saved fragments will be played in a row.

Repeat recording

In this mode, you can get a record of events in the game that occurred earlier. When activated, the game constantly records fragments of the game in the background, but does not save anything until you decide to create a repeat. Returning to the desired event, you can save it by pressing ALT + F1 to select “Save Record”.

  • Canceling the recording will delete all data recorded since the last time the clip was saved. All clips saved before this will remain unchanged.

Clip Information

  • To specify the location on your hard drive that the Rockstar editor can use to save clips, go to the pause menu\u003e "Settings"\u003e "Rockstar Editor"
  • The duration of clips saved in repeat mode depends on the saturation of the episode with events. In tense moments, the average clip duration is 30 seconds. In calmer scenes, its duration will approach 1 minute 30 seconds.
  • When saving, clips are changed automatically. The format is “Month DD YYYY Clip XXXX” (for example: “Jan 13, 2015 Clip 0001”).
  • If the storage space for clips runs out, you will see a notification. Go to the pause menu\u003e "Rockstar Editor"\u003e "Editing Clips" to free up space by deleting unnecessary data.

Menu

To create a new project, select “Create Project” and then “Add Clip”. Select the desired clips and place them on the timeline. To edit the added clip, press ENTER or double-click on it.

  • Use LEFT CTRL + X to “grab” and drag the selected clips in the timeline (or just click and drag the clips). To delete a clip, press DEL to create a copy of the clip - LEFT CTRL + C. You can scroll the timeline with the mouse wheel.

Editing clips

Control Panel

The control panel is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen. It shows the current and total time of the clip, and also contains buttons for returning to the beginning, rewind, play / pause, fast forward, go to the end, go to the previous and next control point and add a new control point. When using a gamepad, the control panel does not appear.

To edit clips, “marks” are used, which can be set at any point in the clip. With their help, you can configure numerous parameters, such as camera angles, effects, playback speed and much more.

Use the MOUSE WHEEL or the LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW to move around the clip and select suitable points for the marks. If a label is selected, the LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW control the label menu.

To add a tag, press M at the desired point in the timeline. A menu with all available options will appear at the top left. You can select various filters, camera angles, sound parameters, clip playback speed and depth of field - all of these parameters are configured separately, which helps to create real masterpieces.

  • Set the duration of the clip by selecting the start and end points of the clip and dragging the cursor to a new position within it.

When you add a new label, it will inherit all the properties of the previous label on the timeline (if any). But after the label is set, changes to the surrounding labels will not affect it.

  • If you want to apply a specific video effect to the entire clip, apply it to the starting mark, and then place the rest.
  • To set the same parameter for several labels, open one of them and press Tab to go to the same menu section for the next label. Thus, you can go through all the marks in the clip, changing the same parameter.

Anchors

For each tag, you can include an anchor that allows you to accurately place text or sound. There are three options for an anchor:

Anchor disabled

All editing functions will be available for this label, but the anchor point on the timeline is not displayed.

Exclusive

Turns the label into an anchor, so you cannot change this label (all previously made changes will be undone). Exclusive marks are displayed in yellow on the timeline.

Anchor is on

All editing functions are available for the tag, the anchor is displayed on the timeline.

In most clips, you can change the camera angles, but in some cases this is not possible - for example, in the case of recording in first-person mode. Information about such clips is present in the editing menu. There are several types of cameras available:

Game camera

The game camera repeats the movements of the camera when recording a clip.

Preset Angles

There are several predefined camera angles: view of the character from the front, back, side and top. If you want, you can zoom in and out the camera.

Free camera

You can freely move the camera, although the scene may impose some restrictions. You can place the camera to capture events that take place far from your hero. Use “Camera target” to fix the camera on your character, or “Move with a target” mode so that the camera moves smoothly after the subject. Using a free camera, experiment with “Transition Modes” to create dynamic transitions and angle changes.

  • You can also turn on and adjust the level of camera shake - this helps to transmit the impact force in a collision or explosion.

You can apply various effects to your video with varying levels of intensity, saturation, brightness, contrast and vignetting.

You can apply the effect of depth of field, which allows you to choose what is in focus. It is possible to adjust the type of focus and the intensity of the effect, as well as set the focus point - for example, the desired character.

  • In the pause menu you need to enable the ability to change the depth of field. Keep in mind that you must use DirectX 11 and set the “Customize Special Effects” to “High,” “Very High,” or “Higher Degree.”

Using this menu, you can adjust the volume of effects, dialogs, and music that sound in your clip. You can also change the intensity level of the musical accompaniment to emphasize the drama of the episode or to reduce tension at any time.

Speed

You can change the playback speed to create a slowdown or acceleration effect. Changing the speed affects the fragment between the selected and the next mark.

Video thumbnails

To switch between the labels you set, press [or]. Use the Position function in the cue menu to reposition the cue in the timeline.

After adding all the necessary marks, save the changes by pressing F5, and then press ESC to return to the timeline.

To go from the timeline to the main project menu, press ESC.

  • To transfer a label to a new position, while retaining its properties, move the cursor over the label and drag the label to a new point on the timeline, while holding the LEFT MOUSE BUTTON.

Sound and text

After adding, editing and arranging the clips on the timeline, select “Music from the radio station” or “Music” in the main menu of the project to add music to your video.

You can select both music from GTAV radio stations and songs from the GTAV soundtrack.

Music from the radio station

Musical accompaniment

Select songs from the GTAV soundtrack, for each of which five levels of intensity are available.

After deciding which music is best for your project, select it and move it to the timeline, using the CURSOR to move the pointer and the LEFT MOUSE BUTTON or LEFT CTRL + V to add. Use the “Next measure” function to synchronize the rhythm of the music. You can shorten a music track to fit in a clip.

  • You can add several radio compositions to the project. If more than one audio track is used, the duration of each of them must be at least 30 seconds.
  • Use GTAV music track intensity levels to convey the emotional atmosphere of the episode.

Microphone type

Change the sound of the clip by selecting the microphone type in the sound options. You can use the default microphone, a cinematic microphone, a microphone located on the camera, and a microphone located on the target.

Adding Text

To add text to the project, select "Add Text" in the main menu of the project. Enter the desired text and set its following properties:

  • The size
  • Text position
  • Font
  • Saturation
  • Duration

Saving and Exporting

Saving your project

Please note that when you delete a game, all videos created in the Rockstar editor will be deleted. Clip and project data will remain. If desired, deleted videos can be restored using this data after a new installation.
