The designers tried to create a smartphone that everyone without exception will appreciate, and in terms of design they succeeded very well. Thanks to the design features, the body of the new smartphone is monolithic. Nothing creaks, doesn’t play, and, what’s more, doesn’t fall off. However, there are also disadvantages in the design of the device, and they do not relate to the shortcomings of the developers - this is a feature of the metal. Photos turn out quite grainy, this is especially noticeable when photographing clearly defined objects, such as buildings.
Color rendition is also not ideal - in daylight, the camera of the new product “overwhelms” light colors, which merge with each other at the output. Perhaps these problems are software problems and will be fixed in future firmware versions. Otherwise, there are no complaints about the camera, HTC One shows natural color reproduction, the pictures are not too bright or faded. Mode HDR works well, better than competing devices. There is also a branded Zoe technology, which allows you to take several pictures at once when taking photographs, and then “glue” them together into a kind of micro-video, animation. This is very convenient for shooting moving objects. The only thing that is puzzling is why the developers gave their own name to the technology, which is present in all top smartphones. In general, at the moment the device's camera is ideal for shooting objects that do not require excessive detail - for example, documents.
As already mentioned, the company's flagship HTC features high-quality external stereo speakers. But demanding music lovers will listen to music on this device without any pleasure. Despite the built-in technology Beats Audio, the device does not handle peak frequencies perfectly. But the “Korean” screen, made using PenTile technology, cannot be compared with the display HTC One, this is heaven and earth. In our opinion, placing the power button on the top of the smartphone is a bad decision, since this is one of the most difficult places to reach on gadgets with large screens.
The back of the device is an aluminum plate, divided into three parts by a thin plastic line in accordance with the division of the front surface into the screen and speakers. The noise canceling microphone is at the very top.
But the camera, which is one of the most controversial decisions of the Taiwanese company, still deserves close attention. It has a 28 mm wide angle lens with an aperture of F/2.0 and 16:09, a 4-megapixel matrix with ultrapixels. This is one of the boldest decisions since the PureView camera, but we'll talk about that later.
Performance and Software

The Taiwanese company has been installing excellent screens lately and the display in the new product is just another example of this. Contrast is certainly impressive, and viewing angles are very wide (there is no color shift, although there is a slight loss of contrast at extreme viewing angles).
The only negative is not very good readability in sunlight.
Camera
HTC One comes with a camera that is one of a kind. This is only the second smartphone with optical stabilization.
The ultra pixels used here are twice the size of the pixels in the 808 PureView and iPhone 5.
Larger pixels mean lower noise and generally better dynamic range. Also helps in low light optical stabilization image (OIS), as we saw in Nokia Lumia 920.
The sensor used in HTC One has a 1/3” diagonal with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and is installed behind a 5-element lens with an F/2.0 aperture. The Taiwanese manufacturer continues the practice of using a single camera interface for photos and videos. We initially didn't like this very much on the One X, but the trend makes more sense here as the camera's default resolution now matches video at 16:9.
So let's get down to business. HTC One promises a lot, but what will it actually deliver? It all depends on the specific situation. When using the gadget in good lighting conditions, the low resolution takes its toll - the overall resolution is limited, although the level of detail is good.
Colors are quite decent and the image looks good when zoomed up to 100%, but we were surprised by a lot of noise. Purple halos appear, which also moves the photo away from the ideal one. Overall, we've found ultrapixel gaming to be underperforming in good lighting conditions. Almost all other high-end smartphones will take their best photos when there is enough light.
Everything changes in low light conditions. Ultra pixels and optical stabilization made it possible to get excellent shots late at night that will surpass the quality of photos taken on other high-end devices.
HTC One has HDR support for photos and videos.
At the end of the camera testing, we prepared an example of macro photography. The smartphone performed very well here, and we were able to get great pictures.
Smartphone HTC One allows you to shoot video with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels at a frequency of 30 frames per second. He has support HDR for video, but note that in this mode the frame rate drops to 28 per second. The phone also supports video recording with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels at an increased frequency of 60 frames per second.
The video is recorded in MP4 format with a bitrate of 20 Mbps - this is one of the highest rates that we had the opportunity to see. Stereo audio is recorded at a bitrate of 192 Kbps and a sampling frequency of 48 kHz.
As it turned out, video recording can be called one of the main advantages of a smartphone. The picture is very detailed with a low noise level. There are minor problems with color reproduction, but optical stabilization makes the video very good in quality.

Battery
One of the features of HTC One is a 2300 mAh lithium-polymer battery, which is mounted inside a metal unibody case. That is, it is non-replaceable, but the capacity is larger than in the HTC Butterfly and the same as in the Sony Xperia Z.
HTC did not provide any official time data battery life gadget. But our special battery testing showed an average result of 48 hours of operation, if you use the device for an hour a day for web browsing, video and telephony.

With this whole incomprehensible situation in the world in general and in Russia in particular, when the cost of smartphones has increased sharply and is not yet going to go down, it’s time to think about whether new smartphone. I’m now talking not so much about the condition of the device - new or used (although about this too), but about whether it is a modern smartphone or, say, a little outdated, released 2-3 years ago, but still on sale. For example, I have an HTC One M7, a very successful device for its time, which I still sometimes take out to use as a device for distributing the Internet while traveling or even as a second smartphone. And if you think about it, it could very well be used as a main phone. I suggest you take a look, or rather, even remember, how strong and weaknesses this model has, if we consider it as the basis of a smartphone for this year.
The main strength of the HTC One M7 today is its design, combined with body materials and dimensions. The device looks cool and after two years has not lost any of its originality; it is still one of the few of its kind and is easily recognizable. Moreover, it is counterfeited, copied, and various developments from the M7 design are used by other companies.
The second is brushed aluminum. The material is practical and convenient - thanks to it, the smartphone lies comfortably in the hand, does not slip out, and traces and fingerprints on the body are invisible and barely remain. Scratches - yes, they appear over time, but they don’t really spoil appearance.
In my sample, after two years of not very active use, but nevertheless, very few scratches appeared on the body, a couple of deep ones on the ribs, and the Beats logo was slightly erased - that’s all. Otherwise, the smartphone looks like a solid “B”, that is, it is perfectly preserved.

Finally, the dimensions are what attracts me most about the HTC One M7. The device cannot be called very compact, but compared to modern flagships it is comfortable: moderately elongated, not too thin, but not too thick, and most importantly, with a good width. Due to all these parameters, holding the M7 in your hand is much more convenient than modern top-end smartphones. You can use it with one hand without any problems, but you just have to get used to the not very good location of the power button on the top edge on the left. Otherwise, in my opinion, in terms of ease of working with the device with one hand, the HTC One M7 will outperform many modern models.
In terms of technical characteristics, as was expected back then, at the beginning of 2013, the flagships of two years ago have not turned into pumpkins today. Yes, progress cannot be stopped: we constantly see new platforms, more cores, more precise technical processes, and so on, but this does not make the devices of previous years slower. The HTC One M7 has excellent operating speed; the device does not lag or slow down during daily use. Seriously, I pick up some HTC One M8 or Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and then One M7 - and I don’t see a fundamental difference in the smoothness of the interface or operation in general. It’s possible that the most hardware-demanding games may not run as fast as you’d like, but not all of us need to play such games, you’ll agree.
The operating time of the M7 is also acceptable compared to 2014 flagships. The screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels in the M7 was one of the best two years ago and remains very good today: maximum viewing angles, natural color rendition, and a good amount of brightness.
Of the minuses that are critical for me personally, I can only note a weak camera: four megapixels, albeit of an increased size, today this is not always enough, let’s face it. Among the general disadvantages is the lack of a memory card slot and, probably, that’s all. I can't think of anything else critical. The smartphone has LTE, has cool and loud stereo speakers and user-friendly interface HTC Sense.

Yes, the HTC One M7 does not have the highest resolution (not all flagships of late 2014 have it either), but a smartphone with a 5-6-inch screen doesn’t really need it, let alone models with screens less than five inches, which includes M7. Yes, the device does not have 3 or 4 GB of RAM and an eight-core processor, but even without this it is fast and works without problems or delays. Yes, the battery capacity here is only 2300 mAh, but this is enough for the device to survive until the evening, like any current flagship (with the exception of a couple of models). That is, in an amicable way, if you don’t know that this is a smartphone from 2013, it can be put on a par with many modern models, and HTC One M7 in this comparison is far from an outsider.

After so much time, it’s already difficult to remember all the positive emotions that this device gave. But the main aspect I still want to highlight is the sound, it is deep and clear. Changing the equalizer when good headphones does not turn the sound into cacaphony. Even some headphones with relatively high impedance (for telephone systems) can open up with this smartphone. Using an iPhone now, I understand how much it lags behind the HTC ONE in terms of music, in fact, this is precisely the reason I use it now. Also an excellent screen: bright and clear. And of course the appearance. It was beautiful then, but now, in a time of similar “iPhone” devices, it naturally stands out.
