Naturally, among our readers there are specialists who can independently and at a high professional level assemble their own computer from individual components, which will be no worse than an industrial assembly device. And if necessary, they are able to find any problem and fix it on their own, even if they have to arm themselves with a soldering iron and an oscilloscope. But there are not so many such professionals. But what about ordinary users?

It's really easy to assemble a computer from individual components, but not everyone can correctly configure it, find hidden defects and make it work correctly. And can you be sure that such a computer works exactly as it should? And the constant and completely incomprehensible freezes of the computer - is this not a by-product of such unprofessionalism? So what is the difference between handicraft and professional assembly of computers in a production environment? Where and how are the technological equipment of the company and the professionalism of its employees manifested? The creation of a computer begins with the design of its model. A serious company has a lineup of dozens of models of desktop computers that differ significantly in parameters, and in functionality, and in the recommended area of ​​application. Design is the most important and crucial stage, consisting in the selection of components, the range of which is very diverse today. "Elbrus" at the price of MacBook Pro

Elbrus computers are produced in Russia based on processors of the same name. An example that has already been considered from all sides is Elbrus-401 RS.

The model went to retail in January 2017, but has already been discontinued. It costs 199 thousand rubles. For this money, you get a complete set: a system unit, a 23-inch monitor, a keyboard, and even a mouse.

The characteristics are so-so: for example, the 4-core Elbrus 4C chip is similar in level to Intel Core 2 Quad 2008 with a frequency of 750 MHz, but there is an integrated video card and a discrete adapter based on AMD Radeon 6000 series. Plus, there's a whopping 24GB of RAM (why Karl?) And can be expanded to 96GB. Yes, there is also a 120 GB SSD for fast loading of OS and applications, and a 500 GB hard drive.

The "Elbrus-401 RS" is running on the basis of an OS based on the Linux kernel. The pre-installed applications are also open source: Firefox browser, AbiWord text editor, GNumeric spreadsheets, email client, etc.

What can Elbrus-401 RS really do for 200 thousand rubles? An employee of the Brook Institute of Electronic Control Machines, Maxim Gorshenin, together with his colleague, software engineer Alexei Ryzhkov, filmed a video about this.

But on the other hand, the computer has 32 GB of RAM, a video card with 1 GB of video memory, a 120 GB SSD drive and a terabyte hard drive. In addition to the processor, all key components are imported:

Who will need such a computer, except officials, is unclear. The characteristics are dubious, the design - well, that is ... But the developer, MCST, is ready to supply Elbrus with hundreds of thousands a year.

The demand for Russian equipment is being actively created. Thus, the Research Institute Voskhod, controlled by the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications, ordered 22 servers based on the Elbrus processor for a total of 49.5 million rubles, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs - 216 servers based on Elbrus-4C for 202.3 million rubles.

But to pass the exams, the police bought terminals based on Baikal chips - as many as 9348 pieces. Each cost only 38 thousand rubles, five times cheaper than Elbrus.

"Talker" with a capacity of 1 petaflops

Not only PCs are made in Russia - supercomputers too! For example, a new supercomputer was built and put into operation at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR).

The system was named after the scientist N.N. Govorun - simply Govorun. True, here there were no "Baikals" and "Elbrus". To create a system with a capacity of 1 petaflops, they took Intel Xeon chips and Nvidia Volta video cards.

A hybrid computer has three different subsystems.

  • The first has 21 nodes with a pair of 72-core Intel Xeon Phi 7290 processors in each, which are efficient for parallel computing.
  • In the second - 14 nodes with 18-core Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors for resource-intensive computing.
  • The third contains five NVIDIA DGX-1 Volta nodes, each containing eight Tesla V100 graphics cards. The power of this subsystem is the highest, 600 teraflops.

Installed "Govorun" in the Laboratory of Information Technologies of JINR. The supercomputer makes it possible to carry out theoretical calculations, on the basis of which experiments are then set up in colliders and other installations.

"Govorun" will simulate the behavior of the NICA detector, which should be completed in Dubna by 2020, and create programs for recognizing the tracks of elementary particles. In addition, it will handle the statistics of particle collisions in colliders.

But objectively speaking, 1 petaflops is the 181st place in the "Top 500" ranking, the list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, which is published every six months. At the top of the ranking is a system with 10 million processor cores and a peak power of 125 petaflops.

Unkillable laptop: MacBook couldn't do that

Rostec is creating a rugged laptop that does not care about harsh working conditions. It will be able to withstand temperatures from -40 to +50 Celsius, precipitation, vibration and shock.

The laptop will be delivered in a sealed plastic case and vibration-absorbing platform. Some of the characteristics are already known:

  • Screen: 15.6-inch (17-inch expected)
  • Communication: Wi-Fi, GPS-GLONASS, 3G-LTE
  • Dimensions: 41.3 x 32.4 x 6.2 cm
  • Interfaces: VGA, HDMI, USB 3.0 x4, Ethernet, audio port and microphone port.

The brain of the laptop will be an Intel processor (not "Baikal" and not "Elbrus"). The model, however, is not reported.

The device will work on the basis of the domestic OS on the Linux kernel. Separately, they will file a trusted download module from unauthorized access to confidential information.

They are creating a laptop for the Ministry of Defense and security officials; it is unlikely to appear in retail. Accordingly, the price is covered with darkness.

The production will be carried out by the Sozvezdie concern (part of the Ruselectronics holding). Interestingly, in 2016 he was developing a similar device based on an Intel Core i7 with a frequency of 3.5 GHz and 16 GB of RAM.

But Ruselectronics does not comment on the connection between computers. They just say that the new laptop "cannot be considered an improved updated version or the next generation" of last year.

Tablets for a million - Tim Cook never dreamed of

The NPP Signal JSC plant creates electronics for the Ministry of Defense. It was recently revealed that the company posted a contract for the purchase of 400 tablet computers on the public procurement website.

The amount in the application is 142.4 million rubles. Or 356 thousand rubles apiece.

Atri CJSC became the winner of the tender. It was able to offer tablets that fit the bill. And these are not fresh iPad Pros, but protected gadgets that will be produced for this order.

However, only GOSTs were indicated in the documents attached to the application. The very same JSC "Atri" shows on the website a line of products: "Orion" tablets with a screen from 6 to 21 inches, which correspond to these GOSTs. Passive cooling, shock and vibration protection - everything is as it should be.
