The installation of HMS is very simple, but we will still explain in detail how it works.

First you need to download the installer. At the time of this writing, the official site was down. And it did not work a month before, so below I will give a link to download the latest version of HMS from our server:

There are not many settings here. In this window, you select the directory where the Home Media Server (HMS) program will be installed and the "Program Group" - the name of the folder in the "Start" menu.

After selecting the installation folder and the name of the folder in the "Start" menu, all that remains is to check the box "create a shortcut to launch the program on the desktop", if necessary, and press the button " Install«.

At the end of the installation, which takes less than a minute ( depends on your equipment), we are offered to immediately launch the Home Media Server (HMS) program.

After changing the name, you need to add folders with media content (if you did not do this in the "initial setup" or decided to add more folders. Everything is simple. If you did everything correctly, then your files should appear on the right side (as highlighted in yellow in the screenshot).

If your TV supports a Wi-Fi or LAN connection and supports real-time DLNA media content transmission, then you should definitely take advantage of this.

Of course, you can play music and videos from a flash drive, but before that you need to transfer all the information to it. In our case, you just need to open access for the TV to any folder on your computer that stores media content.

There are branded applications from TV manufacturers, for example, LG has Smart Share, and Samsung has AllShare. Often, applications from manufacturers leave much to be desired and do not provide the necessary functionality, which cannot be said about the wonderful Home Media Server program. By the way, you can connect to the created media server not only from the TV, but also from any other DLNA client, for example, from a game console.

Before you start setting up your home media server, you need to connect your TV using the connection method available to you, usually LAN and Wi-Fi. The TV is most conveniently connected to a router, but in extreme cases, you can connect directly to a computer or laptop.

Setting up a media server.

After installing the program, open it and go to the menu "Settings".

In the left part of the window that opens, select the category "Media resources", on the tab "Directory List" you must specify which drives (local, network, removable) and folders with media content will be available on the TV. By default, the standard folders with photos, videos and music are already open.

To add the necessary folders and disks, use the button "Add"... In the explorer window that opens, you just need to select the folders or drives to which you need to give access and click "OK".

When adding or removing folders or disks, it is necessary to scan the directories of media resources, usually the program itself asks for permission to scan. This will keep the list of available files up to date.

You can also configure automatic scanning of directories. In the tab "Scanning" you need to check the two boxes shown in the screenshot below. Note that checking the box next to "Automatic scanning of directories when they change while the server is running" may slow down the speed of directory navigation from the TV.

Here we recommend that you check the box in front of "Always use the file name as the name of the media resource", then in the list you will always see the files by their own names, otherwise the TV will name the file based on its tags.

In the category "Devices" in the dropdown menu "Default device type" you need to choose the device that best matches yours. Depending on the selected device, the list of formats supported by the device will change.

If you know that your TV supports more formats than those presented in the proposed list, then you can open the settings window by clicking on the corresponding button, and in the extension fields "Films", "Music" and "Photo" specify the required formats separated by commas.

In the category "Additionally" you can set the program to start automatically and the server to start automatically when the computer is turned on. To do this, you need to check certain boxes indicated in the screenshot. It is also recommended to check the box next to "Installing Windows Home Media Server (UPnP, DLNA, HTTP) Service", in this case, the media server will run as a service.

This completes the setup of the home media server.

What is DLNA?

In the English translation of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) - certain standards, thanks to which compatible devices can transmit and receive various media content over a home network and display it in real time using wired and wireless channels.

Thanks to this technology, home computers, mobile phones, consumer electronics, laptops are united in a single digital network. When using DLNA certified devices, they are automatically configured and connected to users' networks.

Thanks to the transmitting device (server), information is transmitted to the TV. A PC, a telephone, a camera, or a camera can act as a server. DLNA support may mean that the device is capable of receiving video.

This wired or wireless network has its advantages:

  • The ability to instantly access materials located on all home devices of the user. Watching a movie or photo is possible immediately after downloading, the music can be listened to on the music center in the highest quality.
  • No need to drill holes in walls and doors for wireless connection.
  • With a wireless connection via Wi-Fi, it is possible to download files entirely to the desired devices for further viewing.

Disadvantages of DLNA include:

  • To make a wired connection (for example, through reinforced concrete walls that block the radio signal), holes must be drilled in the walls and doors, which will negatively affect the interior.
  • The wireless connection is significantly affected by various obstacles such as steel reinforcement or thick concrete (brick) walls.
  • As with the Internet, there is the possibility of file playback delays during streaming if the file is too large or if the connection speed is not high enough.
  • Using a weak router can affect the speed and quality of data transfer.
  • Not all file types may be played back, and HD video transmission may be inferior.

After the end of the installation, it is better to delete the unpacked files in manual mode, because they are not automatically deleted.

General configuration of HMS as a DLNA server

The installed DLNA server will prompt the user to continue the configuration process at startup:

  1. At the first start, a window will appear with the initial settings. It will ask you to choose a device for broadcasting media content. Many templates with devices will appear in the proposed list. If your own or a similar device was not found, then it is worth stopping at the standard DLNA Device. Having made a choice, you need to move on to the next step.

  2. Select folders from which to take media content. You can select folders with media content at this stage or add them later. After selecting the folders, you need to click on the "Finish" button.

  3. After making the initial settings, you will be prompted to create a backup with settings, image cache and database. You will also be prompted to configure the automatic backup schedule. Then the "Close" key is pressed.

  4. The main window of the program will appear. There are some important settings to pay attention to here. On the left side, the types of settings will be listed, and on the right side there are sections with specific settings.
  5. On the left side, you need to go to additional settings and configure automatic loading of the DLNA server when the computer is turned on. For this purpose, you need to select the second and third points.

  6. Next, you need to go to the "Server" tab and specify your DLNA server as it will be on the network.

  7. After changing the name, you need to go back to adding folders (if you have not done this before or when adding other folders). To do this, click on the "Add" button, then select the folder that you are going to add. Next, you need to perform its "Scan" to get files from folders to the server.

  8. When done correctly, these files will be listed on the right side of the screen. If there are necessary files in this list, all that remains is to launch and start using the program. To do this, press the "Start" key.

  9. In the case of enabled Windows Firewall, the system will ask for permission to access the network. You should select which networks will be allowed access, and click on the "Allow access" button.

Connecting and viewing media content

After starting the program, turn on the TV. If connected correctly, it will be in the "Home Media Server".

Using LG TV as an example

As an example, a variant of operation of the LG LN655V TV receiver with a DLNA server is presented. In the main Smart TV menu, go to LG SmartShare.

First connection:

  1. When connecting the unit to the TV for the first time, refer to the “Connection Guide” located in the lower right corner.

  2. Next, you need to go to the "PC Connection" tab and click "Next".

  3. Then there will be two more windows, where you also need to select "Next". If nothing is automatically set in the window with the choice of the IP address, then select your home network (wired or wireless, in accordance with the method of connecting the TV).

  4. On the fourth press, the owner's computer should be visible. If it is absent, you need to restart the server.

After initial connection, the device will be displayed at the end of the LG SmartShare “Connected Devices”. If it is not there, you need to restart the server on the computer. For example, for movies, a folder with “Movies” is selected, and then “Media Resource Directories”.

A list of folders that have been added to the HMS settings will appear. You can use any folder to start a movie.

On the example of TV SONY Bravia

In this case, a KDL-46XBR9 TV set was used. Algorithm of actions:

  1. The Home Media Server program is installed and launched on the computer. To go to the settings, use the corresponding key.
  2. On the right side you can see the "Add" button. In addition, it is possible to select a file for scanning at the start of the program. Scanning is needed if the user has changed the contents of this directory. The green circle shows scanning.

  3. Next, you need to go to the button with file types on the right side. PAL video files cannot be played on certain TVs. "NTSC" should be inserted for content recognition capability (eg MPEG-PS_PAL_NTSC for avi).
  4. Select Transcoding (Core AVC) to the mkv container. In DLNA, you need to record MPEG-PS_PAL or MPEG-PS_NTSC (depending on the TV).

  5. Then you need to go to "Categories", then select "Device". There it is necessary to make a choice of the type and resolution of the TV. Select DLNA1 or DLNA1.5. You can find out which version is supported in the instructions or when visiting the official website.

  6. Configure Web access to the server by going to the next item in the categories.
  7. Add your TV to the client devices. When you click on the icon with a lifebuoy, the program will automatically determine the name of the computer, and it will be added to the "Server" section, the "Name" field. To find devices on the network that support DLNA technology, you need to use the "Search". Make sure the TV is turned on and connected to wireless or wired networks. After the network scan has been carried out, the program will add network clients (TV and computer).

  8. You need to go to the individual settings of the TV receiver and insert the above setting data.
  9. The "File Types" key will navigate to the registration settings for the proposed fixes.

  10. You should return to the main setting window and go to the category item "Transcoder". In the "File format" section, you need to specify "MPEG (DVD)". In the “Video” section, select the MPEG2 compression, quality 6000000. In the “Sound” section, select AC3, 448000, and the “Frame size” - 1280x720, 16: 9. Changing the original frame size is always. Check the box "Color fill to frame size" and on all the boxes of the lower list.

  12. In the final Advanced category, check the Install Windows Home Media Server (UPnP) service box. This will facilitate the automatic loading of the program when the PC is turned on as a service.

Possible problems (errors) and their solutions

Possible problems with setting up Home Media Server as a DLNA server include the following:

  • Server found but won't open on media devices... Configuring the settings in the "Home Media Server (UPnP)" will help eliminate this inconvenience. Setting the settings in the "Device" (specify the old and new version of the model): "Authorization service" - "Russian names of the main folders" - in the "Server" section, specify the constant port (from 1024 to 65535).
  • Errors occurring, stopping, slowing down during playback... It is necessary to make the choice of "Transcoding" of a smaller frame size and quality of video content, then stop watching the movie so that a sufficient amount of the transcoded file is formed, and set a disk for storing temporary transcoding files that is different from the one used for the paging file. You also need to optimize the system as a whole (disk fragmentation, a list of automatically loaded programs).
  • In some cases, a message may appear on the screen that the file type is not supported.... After two or three restarts, everything should be fixed.

DLNA technology makes it easy to transfer files between devices connected to the Internet. Setting up your Home Media Server as a DLNA server is straightforward; the main thing is to follow the step-by-step instructions in this article exactly.

Hide folders one at a time by right-clicking and choosing "Hide Folder". The same should be done for the "Music" and "Photo" categories.

There are folders that cannot be hidden. In this case, I recommend deleting them.

When you have downloaded a new movie, in order for it to appear in the list on the TV, you must perform any of the steps to restart the service. After that, the program synchronizes its list with the files. From simple to complex:

Rewind video

Unlike turning on rewind when viewing via USB, rewinding when viewing via a network is slightly "cut", namely - the standard rewind buttons do not work (only play, pause and stop). You can use 2 options for rewinding

Option 1: Press the "Tools" button on the remote control and rewind in 1 minute increments, moving to any point in the movie almost immediately. (This function does not work on all TVs)

Option 2: When watching a movie, use the "Left" "Right" buttons (rewind for 10 seconds) (which move through the folders.

Occasionally there may be files that cannot be rewound at all (depends on the codec and your TV)

File cannot be read

If you do not read any * .mkv file (very rare * .avi) referring to "Not Supported Video Codec" (this message may appear even if the audio codec is not supported), there are options for solving the problem. (For example: my TV's firmware T-MST4DEUC-1026.0 supports H.264 BP / MP / HP up to H.264, Level 4.1. H.264 FMO / ASO / RS formats are not supported)

Option 1: Use the "Transcoding" function

Option 2: If "Transcoding" does not work on your TV model, select a Philips device with a suitable configuration instead of a Samsung in the program settings and restart the server. In this case, the notification on the TV about the connected device will not be shown. We go into the desired folder and the files in which the error was written will begin to open. This method is not suitable for everyone, only for those who have a more or less modern PC. on a PC, the process of encoding video "on the fly" is started when viewing and weak computers simply will not have time to process the video without visible "freezes". With this method, rewinding will not work, however, if you go into the transcoding folder (located in the same folder with the video file being opened) and then go to the folder with parts of the movie, you can select any part of the file (1 minute intervals), when the minute ends, another part will not "loaded" taking a break for a couple of seconds, and everything is played as it should be.

But I do not recommend leaving the Phillips device in the program settings. when watching any video file (even the one that went without problems) it will still be encoded and load the processor on the computer.

(Tested on Samsung LE32D550K1W)

Information:

The "Transcoding" function provides for video transcoding "on the fly", etc. if it is impossible to view it normally (if your TV does not support any format or codec).

In my case (Samsung TV), transcoding rarely helps, you have to select a separate mode for each video.

Save and rename "Server restart.txt" to "Server restart.bat"

When you download a new movie from the network / Internet, run "Server restart.bat" and after a few seconds (depending on the power of the PC and the number of open files) everything will be ready
