Lenovo Zuk Z1 was first announced in 2015 in the month of August, not much time has passed since then, so this model remains relevant. Now briefly about the main thing. Lenovo Zuk Z1 is equipped with a large 5.5-inch IPS screen, built on a fairly powerful but no longer fresh processor, endowed with a capacious battery, a fingerprint scanner and a Type-C 3.0 USB port. And in more detail about all the characteristics and capabilities of Lenovo Zuk Z1 can be found in the review below.

Design
The appearance of any device is its calling card, and in the case of Lenovo Zuk Z1, individuality is clearly visible. The smartphone really does not look like Lenovo, but has its own features and is very interesting. A metal rim runs along the perimeter, securely fastening the entire structure. On the front panel, the side frames are quite thin, but the indentation from the top and bottom of the screen is quite large, which creates a feeling of some volume. Also, the considerable case profile of 8.9 mm adds to the heaviness, which is a lot by today's standards. The back side of the cover spoils the whole appearance, as it has a glossy plastic surface and easily collects all fingerprints, creating untidiness. But this property is only for the white model, there are generally only two color solutions - white and silver. The latter has a matte surface on the back, which is much more practical and prettier, in my opinion. Dimensions: 155.7 x 77.3 x 8.9 mm, weight - 175 grams.
Screen Specifications
Lenovo Zuk Z1 has a 5.5-inch screen with physical dimensions of 68 x 121 mm, made using IPS matrix technology with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, while the pixel density was 401 ppi. Corning Gorilla Glass covers the screen and protects it from damage. Multi-touch supports up to five simultaneous touches, there is also an automatic screen brightness sensor and anti-glare coating.
The image on the screen pleased with its good margin of brightness, which allows the information to remain readable on a sunny day. Viewing angles are optimal. The colors are quite saturated, one might even say somewhat oversaturated, which is a minus, the color gamut is quite large. The contrast level is also great 1270: 1, the maximum brightness is 480 cd / m2. In general, the screen is not bad, but requires manual setting color range.

Hardware Capabilities
This smartphone model is based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 801. This is a good processor and has enough power, but in its time, because at the moment such a processor is outdated. Quad-core processor with MSM8974AC architecture, and the maximum clock frequency 2.5 GHz. used graphics adapter Adreno 330, the maximum frequency of which is 578 MHz. The amount of RAM in this case is 3 GB. The built-in flash memory is 64 GB, but in fact a little less is available to the user - 53 GB. It is impossible to supplement using memory cards, but you can connect additional drives.
The performance of the Lenovo Zuk Z1 is at a decent level to compete with other models, and although it does not use the latest processor, the flagship platform does its job. The smartphone works smoothly, fast enough, showed itself well in multitasking conditions, smoothly displays video, and also launches any resource-intensive applications and three-dimensional games.
Sound
I would like to say a few words about the sound that the manufacturer endowed Lenovo Zuk Z1 with, because the sound here is also very decent. Usually we do not pay due attention to the sound, because rarely does a manufacturer bother about it, and somewhere the sound is a little louder, and somewhere a little quieter. And although in this model you will not find an audio player and FM radio, you can use the standard version of the Google program play music. The quality of the auditory speaker and the external speaker are excellent, there are no complaints about this.

Camera
It just so happened that we all stopped using cameras a long time ago, with the exception of professional ones, we photograph everything exclusively on phones and tablets, so when buying a new model, we always pay attention to the quality of the camera. Lenovo Zuk Z1 is endowed with two modules of digital cameras, 8 MP front and 13 MP main. The main camera has a sensor from Sony IMX214 Exmor RS, f / 2.2, a five-component lens, and, of course, an LED flash and autofocus. The front camera is equipped with a sensor from OmniVision OV8868, f/2.2. The quality of the cameras pleased, there are a lot of settings, they can be mastered as needed, but the photos and videos are very worthy.
Communications
The phone supports 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA communication standards, but also LTE in the three most common bands. Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth, GPS are also supported, as well as a USB 3.0 Type C connector. Everything works flawlessly. The device supports two SIM cards, which is convenient and practical.
Conclusion
Lenovo Zuk Z1 is a really worthy model, organized on the flagship platform, which is endowed with a lot of features, although there are some shortcomings in the form of oversaturated screen colors, but otherwise everything is very good.

The flagship firstborn of a new sub-brand of Lenovo

The world-famous Chinese electronics manufacturer Lenovo announced this year the creation of a separate subsidiary called Zuk, which will market products under the appropriate brand name. It seems that this has recently become fashionable among major Chinese manufacturers: similar actions were taken by ZTE with its Nubia sub-brand, as well as Huawei, which singled out the Honor division into a separate trademark.

The firstborn in the newly minted Zuk family was flagship smartphone Z1 with characteristics corresponding to products, if not top, then clearly above average. The device can only boast of the latest SoC, but in all other respects, the Z1 turned out to be no worse than other modern flagships. In mid-August, the start of sales of the Zuk Z1 was given in China itself, and later, in September, it was announced that the international version of this model, intended for the European market, would soon be released.

For sale Zuk smartphone The Z1 comes in an attractive box designed as a flat square box with a hinged lid. Inside, all accessories are laid out in separate smaller cardboard boxes. The packaging is laconic and stylish, this discreet combination of white matte textured cardboard and silver lettering compares favorably with the familiar familiar fussiness often found in Lenovo products.

The equipment is minimal: in the box there were only Charger with an output current of 2 A and a nice rubberized flat USB 3.0 Type C cable. The SIM eject key is attached to a cardboard box with paper documentation.

Appearance and usability

The design of the Zuk Z1 is unique. The smartphone is completely different from any of Lenovo's smartphones known to us, the analogy here can be rather drawn with the products of the same LeTV or, for example, with the first-born Huawei Mate, which was released a few years ago. In comparison with LeTV One, the hero of the review generally looks like a twin: smartphones look like two drops of water, and the structure is the same up to the presence of a USB Type C port, except, of course, that the Zuk Z1 has a fingerprint scanner on the front panel.

Not to say that Zuk Z1 was very beautiful, but also not to call it uninteresting. There is just an inexplicable feeling that this product is more designed for Asian tastes than for Europeans. Nevertheless, the smartphone is quite presentable: it has a wide metal bezel that inspires sympathy, neat streamlined shapes with smoothed corners and sloping edges, only the back cover here, in the worst traditions, received a glossy finish, which made the smartphone very slippery and easily soiled.

In addition, the device turned out to be quite heavy and large: a considerable thickness of the case, a wide frame around the screen and excess weight cannot be overlooked. Not every hand will find such a massive device comfortable; fans of small, neat mobile devices will find the Zuk Z1 the most “shovel” that neither is.

The monolithic case of the Zuk Z1 is non-separable, so the cards are installed in the side slot and removed using the supplied metal key. There is only one connector, it accepts a double metal sled, on which you can put two Nano-SIM cards - there was no place for a memory card in the smartphone.

The front panel of the Zuk Z1 is completely covered with a flat protective glass Gorilla Glass, which does not have sloping edges or sides. A full set of familiar elements is hidden under the glass: sensors, front camera peephole, led indicator events are in place.

In the lower part, under the screen, there is a large rectangular mechanical control key with a built-in fingerprint scanner platform, on the sides of which two round dots of additional buttons are illuminated with soft white light. Since the buttons are not provided with specific icons, their purpose can be changed in the settings menu, which is convenient. In the same menu, by the way, you can additionally enable the display on the screen of a panel with the same buttons, only now virtual, their purpose and order can also be changed. The functionality of the hardware buttons has been expanded: they respond to both single and double presses, as well as long presses, and all these functions can be manually reassigned in the menu.

It is curious that the software for working with the scanner is universal here, designed for several different models. To begin with, the user himself is asked to determine where the fingerprint scanner is located on the case: in front, behind, or somewhere else. Using the touch central button, you can not only identify the user by fingerprint (Touch ID), but also perform additional operations, such as switching between running applications, returning to the previous menu, etc. The scanner itself works clearly, you can bring your finger to it under any angle, if you touch exactly, then there will be practically no errors in recognition.

On the back side, the camera module does not protrude beyond the body, the glass is protected by a metal ring, into which it is slightly recessed, so there is no reason to be afraid of scratches. Nearby you can see a double flash, consisting of two LEDs of the same color. In order to use the flash as a flashlight, you need to follow the menu quick access in the notification shade.

The speaker here is brought to the bottom end of the case, and its grille is standardly made in the form of several large round holes - the Chinese like to copy the design of Apple products. On the other side of the USB 3.0 Type C connector is a microphone hole. The connector itself supports connecting external devices in OTG mode, but for this you will need to separately purchase a new type of OTG adapter.

On the opposite, upper end there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack. There are no fasteners for a strap on the case, there are also no plugs on the connectors: the smartphone is not protected from water and dust.

As for the colors of the Zuk Z1, there are only two of them, while the cases, depending on the color, also have a different coating. The white version, as we have in the photos, has a glossy and easily soiled surface of the back cover, while the silver Z1 has a metallic finish, and it is also matte and non-marking, which is more practical.

Screen

The Zuk Z1 smartphone is equipped with touch screen IPS, combined with protective glass Gorilla Glass. The physical dimensions of the display are 68 × 121 mm, the diagonal is 5.5 inches. The screen resolution is 1920×1080, the dot density is 401 ppi. The frame around the screen is not narrow at all: about 4.5 mm on the sides, 15 mm on the top and 19 mm on the bottom.

The display brightness is automatically adjusted based on a light sensor. There is also a proximity sensor that blocks the screen when you bring the smartphone to your ear. Multi-touch technology allows you to handle 5 simultaneous touches. The screen can be activated by double tapping on the glass.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his expert opinion on the screen of the test sample.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are no worse than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the off screens (on the left - Nexus 7, on the right - Zuk Z1, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen on the Zuk Z1 is a little darker (brightness in photos is 113 versus 115 on the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the Zuk Z1 screen is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the screen layers (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS type screen - One Glass Solution). Due to the smaller number of borders (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in ambient light conditions, but their repair in case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the whole screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (very effective, noticeably better than Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

When manually controlling brightness and when outputting a white field full screen the maximum brightness value was about 480 cd / m², the minimum - 5.3 cd / m². The maximum brightness is high, and given the excellent anti-reflective properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors should be at an acceptable level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control by light sensor (it is located to the left of the front speaker slot in the same dark stripe with it). In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. This function depends on the position of the brightness slider. If it is 100%, then in complete darkness the auto-brightness function reduces the brightness to 75 cd / m² (a bit too much), in an office lit by artificial light (about 400 lux) it sets it to 310 cd / m² (it could have been less), in a very bright environment (corresponds to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) the brightness increases to 480 cd / m² (to the maximum - it is necessary); if the adjustment is about 50%, then the values are as follows: 4.3, 120 and 480 cd / m² (the first value is low, the other two are suitable); regulator at 0% - 4.3, 8.8 and 480 cd / m² (already the first two values \u200b\u200bare underestimated, which is logical). It turns out that the auto-brightness function works more or less adequately and allows the user to customize their work to individual requirements. At any brightness level, there is virtually no backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

AT this smartphone IPS type matrix is used. On a micrograph, if desired, you can see a typical IPS subpixel structure:

For comparison, you can see the gallery of microphotographs of screens used in mobile technology.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. For comparison, here are photographs in which the same images are displayed on the Zuk Z1 and Nexus 7 screens, while the brightness of the screens is initially set to about 200 cd / m² (on a white field in full screen), and the color balance on the camera is forcibly switched to 6500 K. White field perpendicular to the screens:

The uniformity of brightness and hue of the white field is good. And a test picture:

The colors on the Zuk Z1's screen are oversaturated (note the tomatoes), and the color balance is noticeably different from the Nexus 7. Now at about a 45-degree angle to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens, but the contrast on the Zuk Z1 decreased to a greater extent due to more whitening of blacks and a decrease in image brightness. And the white box:

The brightness at an angle at the screens decreased (at least 5 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the Zuk Z1, the brightness drop is greater. The black field, when deviated diagonally, is highlighted strongly and acquires a yellowish or slightly purple hue. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

And from another angle:

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is not ideal, in addition, the white body transmits light from the backlight LEDs:

Contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 1270:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 25 ms (13 ms on + 12 ms off). The transition between grayscale 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) and back in total takes 43 ms. The gamma curve constructed from 32 points with an equal interval according to the numerical value of the shade of gray did not reveal a blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.64, which is noticeably higher than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve in some places strongly deviates from the exponential dependence:

Due to the dynamic and very aggressive adjustment of the brightness of the backlight in accordance with the nature of the displayed image (brightness decreases on dark ones), the resulting dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) does not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential output of shades of gray almost in full screen. For this reason, a number of tests - determining the contrast and response time, comparing black light at angles - we carried out when displaying special patterns with a constant average brightness, and not monochromatic fields in full screen. Let us show the dependence of brightness (vertical axis) on time when switching from a black field to a white field in half of the screen alternately, while the average brightness does not change and dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness does not work (graph 50%/50% ). And the same dependence, but with alternate display of fields in full screen (chart 100% ), while the average brightness is already changing and the dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness is working with might and main:

In general, such a non-switchable brightness correction does nothing but harm, since it reduces the visibility of gradations in the shadows in the case of dark images. In addition, this dynamic adjustment, when displaying any image other than a white field in full screen, significantly lowers the brightness, which impairs readability in bright light.

The color gamut is noticeably wider than sRGB:

Let's look at the spectra:

They are not typical, but we have already seen them in the case of the Sony Xperia Z2 and several other devices. Sony points out that these screens use LEDs with a blue emitter and green and red phosphors (usually a blue emitter and a yellow phosphor), which, in combination with special matrix filters, allow for a wide color gamut. Most likely, this statement is true for Zuk Z1. For a consumer device, a wide color gamut is not an advantage, but a significant drawback, because as a result, the colors of images - drawings, photos and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and the vast majority of them) have an unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, such as skin tones. The result is shown in the photo above.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is average, since the color temperature is significantly higher than the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is much more than 10, which is considered a bad indicator even for a consumer device. However, at the same time, the color temperature and ΔE change little from hue to hue - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance does not matter much there, and the measurement error of color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This device has the ability to adjust the color balance by choosing one of three profiles.

Curves in the charts above standard correspond to the results without any color balance correction, and the curves Warm- data obtained after selecting the profile of the same name (in this case, the maximum brightness of the white field decreased to 460 cd/m²). It can be seen that the change in balance corresponds to the expected result, since the color temperature approached the standard value, and even ΔE decreased slightly, but, unfortunately, still remained above the critical value of 10 units.

Let's summarize. The screen has a high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without problems even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is permissible to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works more or less adequately. The advantages of the screen include the presence of an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, high contrast. Significant disadvantages are the low stability of black to the deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the plane of the screen, distorted color balance, too wide color gamut and non-switchable dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness. Nevertheless, taking into account the importance of the characteristics for this particular class of devices, the screen quality can be considered relatively high.

Sound

Zuk Z1 sounds very interesting. Both the main speaker and the connected headphones produce high-quality, thick and rich, bright sound that remains clear at all volume levels, the margin of which is very high. It is simply impossible to miss a ringing signal, playing movies and games with such high-quality sound turns into a comfortable pastime. There is no own audio player in the smartphone; for this, standard program Google Play Music. For manual control in the settings of the built-in AudioFX sound system, there are a lot of preset equalizer values separately for the main speaker and headphones. You can also further increase low frequencies and add virtual volume. During a telephone conversation, the interlocutors do not note any special distortions. In auditory dynamics, the voice and intonations of a familiar interlocutor remain recognizable. There is no FM radio in the smartphone.

Camera

Zuk Z1 is equipped with two modules of digital cameras with a resolution of 13 and 8 megapixels. Front-camera Equipped with OmniVision OV8868 sensor and f/2.2 lens. You can control shooting using the hardware power button, there is a face detection mode. Of the convenient features: you can use a special mode for left-handers, and there is also the ability to automatically set the maximum level of screen brightness when you turn on the camera. This is convenient in bright sunlight, so as not to go into the brightness control settings every time. The very quality of the resulting images is average: the color reproduction is natural, but the detail and sharpness are sometimes lame.

Video camera can shoot at resolutions up to 1920 × 1080, it is possible to record at 60 frames per second. In fast and slow motion modes, the device also shoots in Full HD resolution. The camera does an excellent job of shooting video in all modes, there are no complaints about the image quality and smoothness, as well as the sound quality. True, the noise reduction system still does not cope with the noise of a strong wind, this can be seen in the first video.

  • Clip #1 (29 MB, 1920×1080 @30 fps)
  • Clip #2 (36 MB, 1920×1080 @60 fps)
  • Movie #3 (75 MB, 1920×1080 @30 fps, slo-mo)
  • Movie #3 (2 MB, 1920×1080 @30 fps, fast)

Sharpness with the removal of the plan falls quite smoothly.

Macro photography is good for the camera.

Good sharpness throughout the frame.

On the pavement, traces of noise reduction are visible, but the car number is distinguishable.

The text is worked out well, despite the software processing.

Foliage begins to merge in medium shots, but in general, the sharpness is not bad.

Good sharpness across the field and according to the plans, although the left edge fails a little.

In room lighting, the camera does not do very well.

The camera turned out pretty good. It performs well in daylight, retaining a lot of detail. At the same time, sharpness is maintained across the entire field of the frame and drops very smoothly from medium to distant plans. However, when there is a lack of lighting, the camera should not be used, since the sensor is clearly weak, and the noise reduction does not work very smoothly. The optics are quite good, although a blur zone periodically appears on the left. As a result, in daylight, the camera will cope well with artistic and documentary shooting.

Telephone part and communications

The smartphone works standardly in modern 2G GSM and 3G WCDMA networks, and also has support for fourth-generation LTE networks, but only three FDD LTE bands (1800, 2100, 2600 MHz) are supported. That is, of the three most common ranges among domestic operators (B3, B7 and B20), the hero of the review can only function in two (B3, 1800 MHz, and B7, 2600 MHz), and not the less common LTE FDD Band 20, 800 MHz, given device is not supported. In practice, with SIM-cards of Beeline and MTS operators in the Moscow region, the smartphone was confidently registered and worked in 4G networks. The quality of signal reception does not cause any complaints, the device confidently maintains communication indoors and does not lose the signal in areas of poor reception. The full list of bands and frequencies supported by the smartphone is presented below:

  • TDD-LTE (bands: 38, 39, 40, 41)
  • FDD-LTE (bands: 1, 3, 7)
  • TD-SCDMA (bands: 34, 39)
  • WCDMA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
  • CDMA2000 (800 MHz)
  • GSN/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
  • CDMA (800 MHz)

The device also has Bluetooth 4.1 support, Wi-Fi Direct is supported, you can organize a wireless access point via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth channels. The USB 3.0 Type C connector supports USB OTG external devices, but you will need to purchase a new type of OTG adapter separately because it uses a Type C connector.

The navigation module works with all three world systems: GPS (A-GPS), Glonass and Beidou (BDS). There are no complaints about the speed of the navigation module, the first satellites are detected during a cold start within the first tens of seconds. The smartphone is equipped with a magnetic field sensor, on the basis of which the compass of navigation programs functions.

The smartphone supports two SIM-cards. Working with them in the menu is organized on one page clearly and intuitively. Any of the SIM cards can be assigned as the main one for organizing voice calls, data transfer and sending SMS messages; when dialing a number, you can also select the desired card using the corresponding buttons. A SIM card in any slot can work with 3G / 4G networks, but only one of them can operate in this mode at the same time. To change the assignments of card slots, you do not need to swap places - this can be done directly from the phone menu. Work with two SIM-cards is organized according to the Dual standard SIM Dual Standby, that is, there is only one radio module here.

OS and software

Initially, the Zuk Z1 appeared on its own market in China with a new Lenovo-made interface called ZUI, but later a modification began to be delivered to the international market with the latest version officially preinstalled with Cyanogen OS 12.1 with support for over-the-air updates (OTA). The shell is well known, here the emphasis is not on redrawing the appearance, and not on reorganizing sections, but on adding, expanding and improving existing functions and capabilities than the CyanogenMod interface and has gained general popularity among mobile technology lovers. It is believed that this customized interface is faster, more economical and more secure. But according to appearance the interface here is almost indistinguishable from the original Google Android with its Material Design. Of the features: there is a menu of pre-installed applications, but it scrolls vertically, and not horizontally, like the rest. Work with gestures is not provided, but support for hardware buttons has been expanded and additional options for customizing the notification panel have been added. It is also possible to switch between profiles, in which literally everything is configured: from the working conditions of communication interfaces to ringtones.

In order to independently install an alternative firmware from CyanogenMod to the Chinese version of the device that comes with ZUI, you must take the following steps.

Flashing requires ADB and Fastboot. Download and copy them to the "platform-tools" folder (adb.exe is also there). Install the USB drivers that will be offered when you connect your smartphone to the PC. On your smartphone, open the developer options (press "ZUI version" several times) and enable "USB debugging" - USB debugging mode. Connect the smartphone to the PC, approve debugging with this computer. In the "platform-tools" folder, call the command window (press the right button on an empty space while holding the Shift key).

AT command line type "adb devices". If the smartphone is connected correctly, you will receive a combination of letters and numbers in response. Then unlock the bootloader with the command "fastboot -i 0x2b4c oem unlock". Type "fastboot -i 0x2b4c boot z1.recovery.testkeys.img". A custom recovery will be flashed, and the smartphone will reboot into it. In the recovery menu, you will see three items starting with “Wipe” - this is the formatting of different sections of the smartphone. Perform all three, just in case, by controlling the mechanical keys of the device. Then select "Install update" and the item indicating ADB.

Go back to your computer and type "adb sideload z1.cyanogen.convert.signed.zip" into the command line. A very lengthy CyanogenMod installation process will begin. Progress can be tracked on the command line. Upon successful completion, you will receive the message "Total xfer: 1.00x". The smartphone will reboot into CyanogenMod and install from the OS Last update international firmware. After that, you can safely resort to weekly updates "over the air" and even do full reset- You don't have to take any specific additional steps to do this.

Performance

The Zuk Z1 hardware platform is based on the obsolete and almost never found in modern smartphones SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, which a few years ago acted as Qualcomm's flagship platform. In this case, its most advanced version MSM8974AC is used, where the operating frequency of four Krait 400 cores is raised to 2.5 GHz. As a graphics accelerator, the Adreno 330 GPU is used with a maximum core frequency of up to 578 MHz.

The amount of RAM of the smartphone is 3 GB, of which at least 2.2 GB is initially free. The device has 64 GB of its own memory, of which about 53 GB is initially available to the user for his own needs. The built-in memory cannot be increased by microSD cards, but it is possible to connect to USB port external flash drives in OTG mode. It uses a fast USB 3.0 interface. In practice, it takes 60 seconds to transfer a 3 GB file from a computer via a USB 3.0 port to a smartphone, which is about 51 MB / s. Through the USB 2.0 port of the computer, the same file is transferred in 2 minutes 10 seconds, that is, the speed is about 24 MB / s.

According to the test results, Zuk Z1 showed a very decent level of performance. A flagship platform from the past is still quite capable of competing with even much more modern flagships. alternative solutions, such as HiSilicon Kirin 935 and MediaTek MT6795. Snapdragon 801 confidently demonstrates results that are no less than those of the listed SoCs, both in complex and in specialized graphics tests. At the same time, the platform is clearly inferior to its more advanced and more modern flagship successor Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, and even more distant from the currently leading Exynos 7420 used in the most powerful modern devices. samsung galaxy S6/S6 edge/S6 edge+.

However, if you move away from the dry numbers of synthetic benchmarks, the Zuk Z1 user will definitely not feel a lack of performance. Even now, this smartphone is far above average in terms of performance, its hardware capabilities are still quite enough to perform any task, including demanding games.

Testing in latest versions complex tests AnTuTu and GeekBench 3:

For convenience, we have summarized all the results obtained by us when testing a smartphone in the latest versions of popular benchmarks in tables. Several other devices from various segments are usually added to the table, also tested on similar latest versions of benchmarks (this is done only for a visual assessment of the obtained dry numbers). Unfortunately, within a single comparison, it is impossible to present the results from different versions benchmarks, so many worthy and relevant models remain “behind the scenes” due to the fact that they once passed the “obstacle course” on previous versions of test programs.

Testing the graphics subsystem in 3DMark gaming tests, GFXBenchmark and Bonsai Benchmark:

When testing in 3DMark for the highest performing smartphones, it is now possible to run the application in Unlimited mode, where the rendering resolution is fixed at 720p and VSync is disabled (due to which the speed can rise above 60 fps).

Browser cross-platform tests:

As for benchmarks for evaluating the speed of the javascript engine, you should always make allowances for the fact that the results in them depend significantly on the browser in which they are launched, so that the comparison can only be truly correct on the same OS and browsers, and this possibility is available when testing not always. In the case of Android OS, we always try to use Google Chrome.

thermal images

Below is a thermal image of the back surface taken after 10 minutes of running the GFXBenchmark battery test:

It can be seen that the heating is noticeably more localized in the upper part of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 38 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees), this is not very much.

Video playback

To test the "omnivorous" when playing video (including support for various codecs, containers and special features, such as subtitles), we used the most common formats, which make up the bulk of the content available on the Web. Note that for mobile devices it is important to have support for hardware video decoding at the chip level, since it is most often impossible to process modern versions using processor cores alone. Also, do not expect everything from a mobile device to decode everything, since the leadership in flexibility belongs to the PC, and no one is going to challenge it. All results are summarized in a single table.

According to the test results, the test subject was unexpectedly pleasantly surprised by the presence of support for all the necessary decoders that are needed for full-fledged playback of most of the most common multimedia files on the network. That is, for their successful playback, you don’t even have to resort to using a third-party player - for example, MX Player, although playback in it will also be supported by the AC3 audio format, which is good news.

Video output features tested Alexey Kudryavtsev.

We did not find an MHL interface, as well as Mobility DisplayPort, in this smartphone, so we had to limit ourselves to testing the output of video files on the screen of the device itself. To do this, we used a set of test files with an arrow and a rectangle moving one division per frame (see “Methodology for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)”). Screenshots with a shutter speed of 1 s helped determine the nature of the output frames of video files with different parameters: the resolution varied (1280 by 720 (720p), 1920 by 1080 (1080p) and 3840 by 2160 (4K) pixels) and frame rate (24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps). In tests, we used the MX Player video player in Hardware mode. The test results are summarized in the table:

File Uniformity Passes
4K/30p Red marks indicate possible playback problems with the respective files.

According to the frame output criterion, the quality of video files playback on the screen of the smartphone itself is good, since frames (or groups of frames) can (but are not required) to be displayed with more or less uniform alternation of intervals and without frame drops. When playing video files with a resolution of 1080p (1920 by 1080 pixels) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly along the border of the screen, one to one in pixels, that is, in its original resolution. The brightness range displayed on the screen corresponds to the standard range of 16-235 - all gradations of shades are displayed in the shadows and in the highlights.

Battery Life

The capacity of the built-in non-removable battery installed in the Zuk Z1 is almost the maximum today for a regular smartphone 4100 mAh. With such powerful battery the device simply could not help but demonstrate record-breaking duration battery life. At the moment, Zuk Z1 is one of the most “long-playing” smartphones on the mobile device market, it is practically a record holder, few people can compare with it in terms of autonomy in any operating modes.

Measurements showed that continuous reading in the Moon + Reader program (with a standard, light theme, with auto scrolling) at a minimum comfortable brightness level (brightness was set to 100 cd / m²) lasted more than 21 hours until the battery was completely discharged. Without auto-scroll function in FBReader these figures will increase for another couple of hours. When continuously watching Youtube videos in high quality (720p) with the same brightness level through the home wifi network the device lasted more than 16.5 hours. In the 3D-games mode, the device worked for almost 7 hours.

At the same time, the smartphone charges quickly enough. The machine supports the quick Qualcomm charging Quick Charge, as a result, the smartphone battery is fully charged in 2.5 hours.

Outcome

For all its good features, the Zuk Z1 is not that expensive. The novelty, designed to compete with Meizu, Xiaomi and Huawei mid-range devices in the local market, is priced at the equivalent of $285. True, those few sellers who offer this model on Russian market, the price fluctuates already around 22-23 thousand rubles, and at this price this device has many equally worthy competitors: for example, LeTV One, Meizu MX5, and even OnePlus 2. Let's say that LeTV One has wider support LTE frequencies in Russia and a much more modern 64-bit SoC. However, in general, all the listed devices are worthy of each other, and they play, as they say, “on the same field”.

The Zuk Z1 smartphone has something to interest the buyer. The device received a solid and reliable, although not the most elegant case, a good large screen, an excellent sound system, a satisfactory set of communication interfaces, a fairly powerful, albeit officially not a flagship, hardware platform and, of course, an outstanding level of autonomy - already beyond this alone can be treated with increased attention to the Zuk Z1.

Instructions for flashing QFIL firmware for ZUK Z1 and Z2.

The instruction is provided for informational purposes, please do not ask me questions about installing firmware !!!

Driver installation.

For these purposes, a PC with Windows 7, 8 or 10 is required.

When you turn on the PC, press F8 several times, choose to boot without checking the signature of the drivers.

When installing Qualcomm_Diag_QD_Loader_2016_driver, a window appears

We do not change anything, click Next and continue to install the driver.

After installing all 2 drivers and 1 program, go to the QFIL program.

We go to the start menu and find the QPST software package and click right click mouse on QFIL, run the program as administrator.

After running QFIL, we see the following

Let's go to the tab first. Configuration-FireHose Configuration, set memory type Device Type - eMMC, check the box Reset After Download. We return to the main QFIL window.

When the file extension was changed:
for ZUK Z1: find the file prog_emmc_firehose_8974.mbn and open
for ZUK Z2: find the file prog_emmc_firehose_8996_ddr.elf and open

Choose a file rawprogram0

Next, select a file patch0

At the end of the selection procedure, we have the following window, but we can’t sew yet because there is no port, so the download button is not active

For ZUK Z1 :
turn off the phone, connect USB cable only for PC, clamp volume up button and at the same time connect the cable to the phone.

For ZUK Z2:
We connect the USB cable to the computer and the phone and turn off the phone, hold it down while turning it off volume rocker up when you hear a vibration, hold down power button.

If it doesn't work, then:
Option 2 for ZUK Z2 ( for bricked phones use this option):
Turn off the phone, connect the USB cable only for PC, Further simultaneously!!! perform the following actions:
press the power button + volume up button + connect the cable to the phone.
It may not work the first time - turn off the phone and try again until the port is caught (see below).

Option 3 ( if you can’t put the phone into bootloader mode with the previous options - it’s not suitable for bricks !!!):
We turn off the phone, enter it into fasboot mode (hold down both volume keys and, without releasing them, connect the phone to the PC).
Install ADB from this instruction (if not already installed), in the command window on the PC, enter the command:
fastboot -i 0x2b4c oem reboot-edl

Next, we see the following result, the driver is installed and the port for firmware has become available (if the driver was installed earlier, the port will simply be caught)

We press the button Download- the firmware process will begin.
Important!!!
We are waiting for the firmware to be completely flashed, in no case disconnect the phone from the PC, even if it seemed to you that the firmware process had stopped.
At the end of the firmware, the program will write Finish Download, wait until the phone restarts itself, only after that we disconnect the phone from the PC.

Possible problems!
For those who have an error with the firmware Download Fail:Sahara Fail:QSaharaServer Fail:Process fail Below are tips to resolve this error:
1) QFIL must be run as Administrator.
2) The path to the folder with the firmware is too long and / or contains Cyrillic - unzip the firmware along the path C: / ZUK and sew again.
3) Use the original firmware cable;
4) Change computer or USB port and sew again;
5) Download QFIL version 2.7.453, remove the QFIL that is installed now, clean the Program Files (x86)\Qualcomm, ProgramData\Qualcomm, AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm folders, install QFIL version 2.7.453 and sew again.

6) In the device manager, the Qualcomm driver may have a triangle with an exclamation mark, reinstall in the "without certificate authentication" mode and without rebooting the firmware.
7) Type file system it costs ufs and not emmc, change to emmc, restart QFIL and try to flash the firmware again.

If the phone was corrupted
1) Don't panic.
2) You need to turn off the phone in order to flash it again through QFIL from the off state. There are many methods on the network for this - either wait until the phone is completely discharged by itself, or use folk methods from the Internet.
I only had a couple of times that my phones were broken because of my inquisitive hands, and both times the phone constantly rebooted - you can turn off the phone from such a bricked state like this - hold down the power key and hold it, the phone reboots, the LED lights up, continue to hold the power key, at the moment when the LED goes out - press the off key - the phone should turn off (the sign of the phone is off - the screen should not light up, the LED should be off).
