Samsung seems to have decided to change this situation: the new Galaxy Tab 2 tablets in the US market should compete with the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, and they will hit the Russian market with an overpriced, but still quite decent price. For example, the younger Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 without a 3G module is recommended to be sold at a price of 9,990 rubles (overseas, this amount turns into an even more tempting $200, but flying over the ocean will be clearly more expensive). Actual prices, of course, will be somewhat lower.
⇡ Appearance: what you were, so you remain
Both tablets look quite recognizable, despite the changed color scheme. It was because of her that the predecessors looked a little thinner: the white color “slims”, while the combination of gray and black used in the Galaxy Tab 2 family, on the contrary, “fattens”.
The front panel of the tablet is difficult to make special: a black frame, a camera eye, a gray edging. The 7-inch Galaxy Tab also has a voice speaker (hello to those who like to call on tablets), and the 10-inch one has two chrome meshes behind which stereo speakers are hidden.
The last design element is borrowed from a special German version of the 10-inch Galaxy Tab released after a long showdown with Apple. Apparently, Samsung no longer wants to develop different versions tablets for different countries- and they do it right. Yes, and Apple will not find fault.
With the sides, too, everything is standard, except that for the description you have to decide where the tablet has the top and where the sides are. We focus on the inscription Samsung. The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (aka P3100) has a Samsung-style power button located on the right side, next to the volume controls, the left side is occupied by slots for MicroSD and SIM cards. "Sims" are put here full-fledged, no MicroSIM. Above and below - on the microphone, on the top side there is still a 3.5 mm mini-jack, and on the bottom - a pair of stereo speakers and a branded very-many-pin connector. On the “back” there is only a camera with a chrome edging. By the way, the “seven” is a little thicker than the “tens”.
The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (P5100) has an identical set of connectors and buttons. All of them, except for one microphone and a multi-pin connector, are located on the upper edge. The second microphone could not be found.
For the back sides, the same plastic is used: silver-gray, matte, strong enough and not scratched. Both tablets have strong pressure it flexes a little and with a soft thud comes into contact with something inside, most likely the battery. Perhaps this is a feature of the samples - Samsung does not distribute commercial versions for testing.
Our sample of the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 had an assembly problem: in the upper corners, the glass moved away from the case by almost a millimeter (company representatives assured us that this applies only to the very first pre-production samples). We took a closer look at this problem and found another: the dark gray glossy plastic of the edging is still scratched. Over time, lighter scuffs will appear on the corners, which did not happen with the previous generation. But at the first "ten" the glossy white back cover was scratched and dirty, while the Galaxy Tab 2 is not susceptible to this disease.

From the point of view of ergonomics, the second generation does not differ at all from the first: everything is as it was, and remains.
⇡ Screen: PLS - it's rather good
In both displays, Samsung used PLS-matrices of its own production. They differ not only in diagonal, but also in resolution: the 7-inch model received a standard resolution of 1024x600 for such dimensions, while the 10-inch model has 1280x800 pixels. The pixel density of the “smaller” is slightly higher: 169 dpi versus 149 for the 10-inch model. I must say after new iPad the ill-fated ladder of pixels can be seen here and there. But for those who have not encountered high-resolution displays, the screens new Galaxy Tab in this respect will seem perfectly normal.
The PLS-matrix in both cases produces a characteristic light “cyanosis” of black color even at close to right viewing angles, especially in the 10-inch model. In most situations, this is imperceptible, but when watching dark scenes in a movie, it catches your eye.

In general, there is not much difference between IPS and PLS - both types of matrices give an equally good picture, so the Galaxy Tab 2 screens differ little from the displays in the previous generation tablets.

Let's spend brief digression in history: the first 7-inch Galaxy Tab was based on a single-core Hummingbird processor with a PowerVR SGX540 graphics core. Its successor, the Galaxy Tab 7.0+, has already received much more powerful hardware: a 1.2 GHz dual-core Exynos and Mali-400MP graphics. Until recently, Samsung had only one tablet with a diagonal of 10 inches - the Galaxy Tab 10.1 based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform: with a dual-core processor operating at a frequency of 1 GHz and GeForce ULP graphics.

Moreover, in graphic disciplines Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 shows exactly the same results as its predecessor on Tegra 2, and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is ahead of it only due to the lower screen resolution. In processor tests, the performance of OMAP 4430 is better than that of Tegra, but only a little. Quadrant results for ICS cannot be compared with the results obtained in other versions of this benchmark, so we have nothing to compare them with yet. In general, tablets have not become faster, so even the Galaxy Tab 7.0+ remains the preferred option for games. True, it is more expensive, but we will return to this later.
Capacity internal memory tablets are different: Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 will be imported to Russia only with 8 GB of ROM (regardless of the presence of a 3G module), and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 - only with 16 GB. True, we had some specific samples: we got the “seven” with 16 GB, and the “ten” - on the contrary, with 8 GB. Of these, 11.5 and 5 GB are available to the user, respectively. You should not be sad because of the small volume: MicroSD cards are now cheap, so the memory can be increased without problems.
⇡ Battery: how much it costs, how much it works
After getting acquainted with the Galaxy Tab 7.7, we somehow tuned in to expect a long battery life from Samsung tablets. Yes, and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 at one time also showed itself well ... The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 has a 4000 mAh battery (voltage is unknown), and the new "top ten" has a 7000 mAh battery. Since the models differ only in screens, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 should live at least a little longer than its fellow with a smaller diagonal. We set up the traditional trailer for the third Fallout at maximum brightness and minimum volume, turned on Wi-Fi and decided to see who would last for how long.
In fact, everything turned out as we expected: the “seven” was discharged to 5% in 4 hours and 45 minutes, the “ten” lasted exactly an hour longer. The average result, and for Samsung tablets is completely low. When the charge is less than 5%, Galaxy Tab 2, regardless of the diagonal, automatically lowers the brightness and starts acting up: the camera is impossible, then impossible, then impossible. However, it plays music and videos just fine.
Tablets are successfully charged from the computer's USB ports, although they "swear" and deceive the user by showing an icon with a crossed-out battery. By the way, Mac system OS X devices of the Galaxy Tab family are still not visible, so “poppies” are only suitable for leisurely charging these gadgets. But USB OTG is supported by both Galaxy Tab 2 - with the appropriate adapter.
⇡ Communication: flight is normal
When testing the connection, we had to face one minor nuisance: it is not clear which side to insert the SIM card into the tablet. It makes a characteristic click in three positions out of four possible, but the plug does not close and the net is not caught. In the last position, the SIM card simply does not fit into the tablet. It turned out that the last position is just the right one, you just need to grow long nails - without them it will be difficult to contrive and put the SIM card in its rightful place.
When trying to see the speed cellular communication we got suspiciously low results, which, in our opinion, should be attributed to the problems of the operator: it is very strange when the download speed is lower than the download speed from the tablet to the Web. So we won't include them. Otherwise, everything works well: Wi-Fi is caught confidently, GPS found as many as 14 satellites in 5 minutes. You can call on the tablet, the interlocutor is heard normally.
⇡ Camera: What do you want?
The main cameras in both tablets are the same and rather dreary even in terms of characteristics: 3.15 megapixels, no autofocus, no flash. The photos they take are appropriate: soapy and noisy - the noise canceler copes with its work only for a C grade. If something is brightly lit, it will appear white in the picture. On the other hand, what else to expect, even if flagship Galaxy Tab 7.7 camera module not much better?

Video Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and 10.1 also shoot about the same, its maximum resolution is 1280x720 pixels. As for the quality... Youtube is worse. Both tablets have front cameras, so they are suitable for Skype.
⇡ Soft: Welcome to the world of ICS
Both tablets work under Android control Icecream Sandwich 4.0.3, but you will not find significant differences from the Galaxy Tab 7.7 interface with its Honeycomb 3.2 - Samsung tried to carefully cover everything with a thick layer of TouchWiz.
Stretching widgets can be considered a nice bonus, which they still left from ICS - however, only a part of both Samsung and Google ones. For example, "Notes" and "Task Manager" allow you to resize, and " Analog clock and, say, S Planner is not.
All the “charms” of TouchWiz have not gone anywhere: hubs and all kinds of S-services, along with a company store Samsung apps. Sense from them, as before, is extremely small.
We also couldn’t get rid of a decent amount of useless third-party software: here you have demo versions of games, and somewhat more appropriate Yandex services, and the Yota Play store.
There are also useful programs: Polaris Office, which Samsung puts on all its devices, as well as a simple video editor and photo editor. But in general, the idea of pre-installed software on a “smart” device consistently smells of obsession and advertising - even from useful programs you want to hide somewhere, because they were fobbed off without asking.
The Phone app on a 10-inch tablet looks fun. A 10-inch tablet near your ear is even more fun. But from both Galaxy Tab 2 you can make calls and send SMS messages - in some situations this can come in handy, but there are those who are seriously considering a tablet with a headset as a replacement for a phone.
In the comments to the previous review of the Samsung tablet, readers were indignant that, they say, you can’t write large files to it and, accordingly, you won’t watch movies in decent quality. We checked: the 4.37 GB movie fit perfectly in the small Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, so the review was interrupted by almost two hours of Kevin Smith's creative session. No restrictions file system does not install.
In general, there are no special complaints about the software, with the exception of one, the traditional one: TouchWiz slows down. And no upgrade to ICS saves him. Apparently, Samsung was too lazy to rewrite the crooked code: the shell stably “wound up” under the fourth “Android” - and that’s enough. Moreover, the iron, if not top-end, but quite decent - the same ADW Launcher literally “flies”. We wish Samsung success in the field of finding sane programmers and move on to the conclusions.
⇡ Conclusions: price is everything
So, we got seemingly mediocre tablets: with decent screens and a modern OS, but not too modern hardware and relatively short time battery life. However, it is logical to evaluate devices in terms of price-quality ratio.
Tab 2 7.0 with 8 GB of ROM and without 3G costs, as we have already said, 9,990 rubles, the addition of a 3G module raises the price to 13,990. with 3G - already 19,990 rubles.
Nook Tablet and Kindle Fire at almost the same price as the "seven" are not endowed with cameras, one of them does not have a microSD slot, the other has less built-in memory. Pro Acer Iconia and it’s better not to remember tablets from lesser-known brands at all: they live even less, and harder, and in general are inferior in almost all respects. There are no normal tablets with 3G for the corresponding money either.
But the “ten” has a serious problem - and its name is iPad 2, which in the lower configuration (16 GB, Wi-Fi) has fallen in price to 14,990 rubles, and with 3G - up to 21,490. Decide which is better, but we leaning towards the Apple tablet. Bottom line: Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 can be safely recommended to almost anyone who decides to buy a 7-inch tablet. And we do not recommend buying the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 without weighing everything carefully, although it has few competitors among Android tablets.
And the last thing: we do not advise owners of older Galaxy Tabs to upgrade in any case - change the awl for soap, and if you had Galaxy Tab 7.0+, you will get not an upgrade, but a downgrade. The only pity is that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 has not been updated: it would also be a little cheaper, and everything would be great.

Thus, those who want to get the most productive solution and additional functionality should pay attention to, while the considered Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (P5100) more suitable for those who are looking for a solution with a balanced price/equipment ratio.
Design
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has typical dimensions for 10-inch models, a thickness of 9.7 mm and a weight of less than 600 grams. The tablet comes with a typical package consisting of an instruction manual, a proprietary cable, and a network charger with removable fork.
The front panel of the tablet is almost completely covered with tempered glass, which protects the 10-inch PLS-matrix from damage. The lower part of the glass is decorated with the manufacturer's logo, the upper one hides one of the two cameras and the light sensor.
In contrast to the traditionally minimalistic design of the main panel of tablets, here you can find side inserts made of gray glossy plastic and a pair of multimedia speakers hidden under metal false grilles. As a result, confuse Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with any other tablet, when viewed from the front, it will no longer work.
Connectors, controls

Tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 runs on Android OS 4.0.4 with proprietary add-on Samsung TouchWiz. In addition to the redesigned interface, this shell adds a convenient rotating panel with a set of useful utilities.
