Open director mode in GTA 5. Creating a new project

The Rockstar Editor is a powerful, feature-rich set of video creation and editing tools powered by the Grand Engine Theft auto 5, allowing you to create music videos, trailers and even entire movies.

The Rockstar Editor is a multifunctional set of tools that allow you to record and process video: users can use the repeat mode, import all recorded clips into a separate project, collect all their recordings into a single library, edit recorded clips by changing the angle of the virtual camera. The editor also allows you to publish your videos to YouTube or post to Rockstar Games Social Club.

Game recording

Recording clips

The user can record a video that will later be used in the clip in two ways: manually, or in repeat mode. At the same time, the video editing process is not limited to traditional camera angles - it is allowed to shoot from all possible angles. However, there are angles for which restrictions are set - you need to pay attention to the tips that pop up during video recording, which indicate whether there are any restrictions for the viewing angles of the virtual camera for a particular clip. You can also notice the limitations during editing - all videos with limitations have a special tag.

Recording modes

To start recording in repeat mode, press Alt + F2; to start recording in manual mode, press Alt + F1.

Repeat recording

Recording mode in replay mode is specially designed for video recording of those game events that have already occurred. Activation of this mode is accompanied by the recording of individual fragments of gameplay without saving and in background... To save any fragment, select the event, and then press Alt + F1 and select the "Save Record" option.

Manual recording

This mode can be activated at any stage of the game. Initially, recording takes place exclusively in the background. At the same time, in order to preserve the most interesting moments you need to press Alt + F1 to cancel saving - Alt + F3. This will delete all unsaved fragments. An unlimited number of fragments can be saved in this mode. All saved materials will be arranged in the order in which they were recorded.

Clip Information

  • to save the finished video to HDD your PC, you need to go to the pause menu, select the "Settings" item, and then select the "Rockstar Editor" sub-item. When saving, videos are automatically named in the format of date (month and year) and clip number;
  • clips created in playback mode can contain fragments of different lengths - for the brightest scenes, the duration will be about 30 seconds, for quieter scenes, the duration will be up to 90 seconds;
  • if there is space for storing a new video, it must be freed up. To do this, select the "Settings" item and the "Rockstar Editor" sub-item in the pause menu. In it you need to select the item "Editing clips", in which you can delete all unnecessary videos.

Main menu

Menu

There are six items in the main menu of Rockstar Video Editor:

  • Create Project: here you can create a completely new project using previously recorded clips;
  • "Load project": this item allows you to load a previously created project for editing;
  • Director Mode: This is the easiest way to launch Director Mode;
  • "Editing clips": here you can manage previously recorded clips, including deleting unnecessary ones;
  • Video Gallery: This item allows you to view finished videos - both those uploaded to the Rockstar Games Social Club and those uploaded to YouTube;
  • Tutorial: Launches the Rockstar Editor Tutorial.

Creating a new project

To create a new project, select the "Create a new project" option, and then click on the "Add images" sub-item. After that, you need to select videos that will be used in the project and place them on the timeline. After the video is placed, you need to double-click on each of the clips for editing, or press the Enter key.

To add videos to the timeline, use the Ctrl + X keys. To delete clips from it, just press the Del key. And to create a copy of a video, you need to select it and press Ctrl + C.

Editing clips

Control Panel

The control panel is on the upper right side of the screen. The panel indicates current time video and its total duration. There are also buttons to go to the end and beginning of the video, rewind, play and pause buttons.

It is noteworthy that for users who use a gamepad, the control panel will not be displayed.

Tags

The main purpose of tags is to configure individual clip parameters, such as, for example, views of the virtual camera, effects and playback speed. You can put tags anywhere in the video.

You can use the Left and Right arrows on your keyboard or the mouse wheel to scroll through the clip and find the best places for placing marks. The menu of labels for making the corresponding changes is carried out using the arrow keys.

To put a mark, just press the "M" key, having selected the place that you want to mark. In the upper left part of the screen, a small window will appear with all the options available for editing. Here you can set the necessary video parameters, change the playback speed, depth of field, change the angle of the virtual camera and change other options. It is the use of all these possibilities that allows you to create an interesting and unique video.

The duration of the output video can be set manually by selecting the start and end marks and then moving the cursor outside the clip.

Standard label properties

Each of the new timeline labels, in addition to their own properties, also carries information about the previous one, if any. In this case, setting the end mark is the final result, all the starting marks will not have any effect on it.

If you want to add some specific visual effect, the effect of which will apply to the entire timing of the video, it is enough to apply it only to the initial mark.

If at the same time you need to make changes to the settings of subsequent labels, it is best to use the simplified method: after the changes are made in the menu of a single label, you must press the "Tab" key, which will automatically entail opening the menu of the next label.

Anchors

Anchors allow you to place sound or text in the video, and you can enable them for any of the tags.

Anchors are:

  • enabled: such anchors are displayed on the timeline, while all parameters are available for editing;
  • disabled: anchors are not displayed on the timeline, but editing options are available, as in the case of enabled anchors;
  • exclusive: after installing such anchors, it will be impossible to make any changes to the mark settings, since in fact setting such an anchor turns the mark into an anchor. These anchors are marked in yellow on the timeline.

Cameras

The angle of the virtual camera in a clip can be changed in almost all cases. However, if you are recording from the first person view, you will not be able to change the camera angle. To check if the function of changing the angle of the virtual camera is available, go to the editing menu.

The following types of cameras can be used to change the angle:

  • free: they allow you to move the camera around all available play areas. To fix the subject of shooting, you should select the item "Camera target". The "Move with target" option is responsible for ensuring smooth movement. To create dynamic transitions during the change of angles, select the "Transition Modes" option;
  • game: they repeat all the movements of the virtual camera during video recording.

In addition, the editor allows you to use a number of preset angles that allow you to shoot an object both remotely and close in any projection.

For the most accurate transfer of special effects: accidents, powerful blows or explosions, it is best to use the "Camera shake" option. But it should be borne in mind that this parameter requires preliminary configuration.

Effects

Rockstar Video Editor allows you to use a wide variety of effects by manually adjusting their intensity. In particular, the user can adjust parameters such as contrast, brightness, intensity, saturation and vignetting.

Depth of field

The depth of field option allows you to adjust focus on a specific point, subject, be it a character or some subject. In this case, the user can manually select the desired type of focus and adjust its intensity.

You can change the depth of field by enabling the corresponding option by entering the pause menu. However, it will not be available on all PCs - the game must run in DirectX 11. To set the required depth of field, go to Settings, then go to the Special Effects Settings sub-item and select one of the available levels: High "," Very high "," Highest degree ".

Sound options

Volume selected for video sound effects can be configured using the "Sound Options" option. So, for example, here you can adjust the intensity of the sound, which will reduce the tension or, on the contrary, add drama by highlighting the sound a certain moment video.

Speed

The sound speed option controls the playback speed of the selected sound fragment. To get the best results, you can experiment with the available slow and speed effects. These effects can be applied both to individual video fragments within the user-selected labels, or to the entire video.

Video icons

Thumbnails of images can be fixed at any convenient point for further use on the timeline of the edited project.

Navigation

To change the location of this or that mark on the timeline, go to its menu and select the "Position" item. To save any labels that have changed, just press F5, while to return to the timeline page, press Esc. Pressing this key again will exit to the main menu.

Sound and text

Adding sound

When the necessary clips are added and edited, you can add music to the resulting video. The music overlay option can be found in the main menu. The parameter provides two options for overlaying sound as musical accompaniment:

  • musical compositions from GTAV radio stations, including songs, as well as melodies of advertisements with a duration of 30 seconds or more;
  • soundtracks from GTAV. In this case, the user will be able to choose the intensity of the sound of the musical accompaniment (there are five options).

To determine which of the suggested types is best for a particular video, you need to select the composition you like and transfer it to the timeline. This can be done either by dragging (move the cursor over the composition, hold down the left mouse button, and then drag to the desired location), or by copying and then pasting using the Ctrl + V command. To synchronize the sound of the musical accompaniment with the video, you can use the "To the next measure" option, where you can edit the duration of the selected composition by cutting it to the desired length.

Microphone type

The sound in the video can change significantly depending on where the virtual microphone is placed. This will be especially noticeable on surround sound systems. To adjust the location of the microphone that "picks up" game sounds, you must use the "Microphone type" option. This option provides four settings: default, on-camera mic, cinematic, and on-chain

Adding text

To add text to a clip, select the appropriate option in the editor menu - "Add Text", and then set all the necessary parameters, such as font, size, color, position, saturation and duration.

Project preview

To evaluate the finished video in full screen mode you can use the "Preview" option, and you can do this even before the exposure. You can find the above option in the main menu.

Save and export

Saving the project

To change the name of the project, or to make several copies of it, you must use the "Save project as" option. If you just need to periodically save directly during editing, you can simply press the F5 key. This will help preserve the project at all stages of work.

Export project

After the project is completed, select the "Export" option, and then set the necessary parameters: bit rate and frame rate. It should be borne in mind that exporting, as a rule, takes longer than the duration of the video. The process can be watched due to the appearance of clips on the screen, but the soundtrack will be turned off - the sound can be heard only after the export is complete.

After the export process is complete, the finished video will be available in the editor menu. Here you can watch it full-screen, and also upload it to the Rockstar Games Social Club or YouTube.

Director Mode

Overview

"Director Mode" allows you to create full-fledged videos, the main characters of which can be any characters from the plot of GTA V, including animals. To unlock new actors, you will have to travel a lot throughout Los Santos and Blaine County.

This mode allows the user to completely manually configure all the scene parameters: change the scenario, change the weather conditions and time of day, add new cues, and so on.

"Director Mode" gives everyone the opportunity to try themselves in the role of a director, and only the user's imagination serves as a limitation. Of course, all settings and actions will be carried out in the Rockstar Editor, however, there are much more opportunities for creating a truly interesting video in this mode than when shooting gameplay.

Access

Unfortunately, you can switch to Director Mode only in Story Mode. At the same time, you can start it in several ways at once:

  • in the pause menu: to launch this menu, you need to press the Esc key while in the game. Next, from the main menu you need to go to the Rockstar Editor (we described how to do this above), and then select the "Director Mode" sub-item;
  • in the interaction menu: to open this menu, you need to press the M key. In the menu, you need to select the "Director Mode" item. It should be borne in mind that to activate this mode in this way, the character must not have wanted stars and move on foot.

Casting menu

Character selection

To select an "actor" for a new video, you need to open the "Characters Menu". As you progress through the storyline of GTA V, the player will have access to all the new characters, each of which has its own unique characteristics and has certain capabilities. To replace a character, select it with the left mouse button, and then confirm the selection by pressing the Enter key. The character will be transferred to the point in the game world where he was made last transition in the pause menu.

Change in appearance

Option " Appearance"Allows you to edit the appearance of the" actors "- to change the color of the skin and hairstyle, add beards and mustaches to characters, change the color of animals.

Using a short list

The easiest way to work with characters is to use a short list, where you can add up to ten characters. To open the list, press the Tab key while working in Director Mode. Now all previously added characters will be available in the director's menu, so they can be instantly changed without going to the selection page. It should be borne in mind that when a character controls vehicle, you cannot change it. Also, changing characters is not available directly during recording.

Settings menu

To adjust these or those parameters, working in the "Director Mode", you should go to the "Settings" menu. Here you can adjust the following parameters:

  • the number of oncoming cars: there are four options to choose from - not at all, few, medium, many;
  • the number of pedestrians: as in the setting of the previous parameter, the user will be offered four options - none at all, few, medium, many;
  • weather: clear weather, rain, thunderstorm, cloudy, haze, smog, fog, and, most interestingly, the Christmas mode;
  • time of day: in this option, you can choose from eight options - dawn, morning, noon, day, sunset, twilight, midnight, night;
  • wanted level: this option can be turned off altogether, or you can adjust it within the usual limits for the game: standard, low, medium or high.

You can also adjust such parameters as the opening of restricted areas, invulnerability and others.

All of the above options can be changed without leaving the director's menu.

Cheat codes

Without exception, all cheat codes can be successfully used in the "Director's Mode" - they will help you create really exciting videos and save a lot of time, since you will no longer have to search for the necessary vehicles all over the map.

Upload to YouTube

Immediately after the video editing is completed, the finished video can be transferred from the gallery to the user's YouTube page.

If Open Access and Share via Link are enabled when a video is moved to YouTube, the video will also be visible in the Rockstar Games Social Club. Enabling the option " Limited access»Allows you to control the ability to view the video, allowing only a few users to watch it.

Recording your game

Start recording sections of your game manually or in replay mode. As a rule of thumb, when editing clips, you are not limited to the usual angles - you have many options for tools and perspectives at your disposal.

  • During recording, information is displayed on the screen, including whether the clip is subject to restrictions on the camera's viewing angles. Saved clips that have these restrictions are marked with a special message that you see when editing clips.

Recording modes

Hold ALT and press F1 to manually record or F2 to engage repeat mode.

Manual recording

While playing, you can turn recording on and off with a single press of a button. You don't have to turn it off, then the video will be recorded in the background until you press the LEFT ALT and select "Save Recording" or "Cancel Recording". During editing, the saved fragments will be played in succession.

Replay recording

In this mode, you can get a record of events in the game that happened earlier. When activated, the game continuously records fragments of the game in the background, but does not save anything until you decide to create a replay. Back to the desired event, you can save it by pressing ALT + F1 to select "Save Entry".

  • Canceling the recording will erase all data recorded since the clip was last saved. All clips previously saved will remain unchanged.

Clip Information

  • To specify the hard drive space that Rockstar Editor can use to save clips, go to Pause Menu> Preferences> Rockstar Editor
  • The duration of the clips saved in repeat mode depends on the intensity of the sequence with events. In tense moments, the average clip length is 30 seconds. In quieter scenes, its duration will be closer to 1 minute 30 seconds.
  • Clips are automatically resized when saved. The format is “Month DD YYYY Clip XXXX” (for example: “Jan 13 2015 Clip 0001”).
  • If you run out of storage space for your clips, you will see a notification. Go to Pause Menu> Rockstar Editor> Cut Clips to free up space by deleting unnecessary data.

The control panel is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen. It shows the current and total time of the clip, and also contains buttons for back to beginning, rewind, play / pause, fast forward, skip to end, go to the previous and next checkpoint, and add a new checkpoint. The control panel is not displayed when using a gamepad.

To edit clips, use "marks" that can be placed at any point in the clip. With their help, you can adjust numerous parameters such as camera angles, effects, playback speed and more.

Use the MOUSE WHEEL or LEFT ARROWS and RIGHT ARROWS to navigate the clip and find appropriate points for marks. If a cue is selected, LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW operate the cue menu.

To add a mark, press M at the desired point in the timeline. A menu will appear at the top left with all the available options. You can choose from a variety of filters, camera angles, audio settings, clip playback speed and depth of field, all individually adjustable to help you create true masterpieces.

  • Set the duration of the clip by selecting the start and end points of the clip and dragging to a new position within the clip.

  • If you want to apply a specific video effect to the entire clip, apply it to the start mark and then place the rest.
  • To set the same parameter for multiple labels, open one of them and press Tab to move to the same menu section for the next label. Thus, you can go through all the marks in the clip, changing the same parameter.

Anchors

For each label, you can include an anchor, which will allow you to accurately place text or sound. There are three options for anchors:

Anchor disabled

All editing functions will be available for this placemark, but the anchor point is not displayed on the timeline.

Exclusive

Anchor included

All editing functions are available for the placemark, the anchor is displayed on the timeline.

In most clips, you can change camera angles, but in some cases this is not possible - for example, in the case of recording in the first person mode. Information about such clips is available in the edit menu. There are several types of cameras available:

Game camera

The game camera follows the movement of the camera while recording a clip.

Preset angles

There are several preset camera angles: front, back, side and top views of the character. You can zoom in and out of the camera if you want.

Free camera

You can move the camera freely, although the location may impose some restrictions. You can position the camera to capture events that are taking place far from your character. Use Camera Aim to lock the camera on your character, or Move with Aim to make the camera move smoothly with your subject. Using the free camera, experiment with the "Transition Modes" to create dynamic transitions and angle changes.

  • You can also enable and adjust the level of camera shake - this helps to convey the force of impact in a collision or explosion.

You can apply a variety of effects to your video with variable levels of intensity, saturation, brightness, contrast, and vignetting.

You can apply a depth of field effect that lets you choose what's in focus. It is possible to customize the type of focus and the intensity of the effect, as well as set the focal point - for example, the desired character.

  • In the pause menu, you need to enable the ability to change the depth of field. Note that you must use DirectX 11 and set the Special Effects Setting to High, Very High, or Highest.

Use this menu to adjust the volume of the effects, dialogue, and music that sound in your clip. You can also change the intensity level of the music to emphasize the drama of the episode or reduce the tension at any time.

Speed

You can change the playback speed to create a slow-motion or speed-up effect. Changing the speed affects the section between the selected mark and the next mark.

Recording your game

Recording clips

You can record video fragments for future clips in two ways: in repeat mode or manually, while the process of editing clips is not limited to the usual camera angles. You will be able to shoot from all viewing angles, except those for which there are restrictions.
Pay attention to the hint that pops up during recording. It will indicate if there are limits for different camera angles for your clip. All restricted videos have a special mark that you will see during editing.

Recording modes

To record in repeat mode, you need to hold down the Alt and F2 keys at the same time, for manual recording - Alt + F1.

How does repeat recording work?

This mode is designed specifically for video recording of game events that occurred earlier. Its activation is accompanied by regular recording of individual fragments of the game in the background without saving. To save a fragment, you need to select the event you are interested in and press the appropriate key combination Alt + F1 and "Save Record".

How is a video recorded manually?

You can start recording at any stage of the game. Initially, it will only happen in the background. Most important points can be saved in unlimited quantity, each time pressing Alt (on the left side of the keyboard) and F1 to save or Alt + F3 to cancel. In the future, all movie clips will be arranged in the order in which you captured them.

If canceled (Alt + F3), all unsaved material will be deleted.

Clip Information

  • To save the finished video on your computer's hard drive, you need to do the following: "Pause Menu" ð "Settings" and select "Rockstar Editor".
  • The saved clips are automatically named in the format of date and number: "month / year Clip XXXX".
  • The clips created in the repeat mode will contain fragments of different lengths: for bright scenes - about 30 seconds, for calm scenes - up to 90 seconds.
  • If there is not enough space to store the rollers, you need to free it up. To do this, in the "Pause Menu" select "Rockstar Editor", and in it - "Editing Clips", where you can delete all the old unnecessary clips.

Tags

Tags are used to adjust the parameters of the clip, for example, effects, different shooting angles, playback speed. They can be installed anywhere on the video.

Use the mouse wheel or the Left and Right arrows to scroll through your clip and find the best places to place the marks. With the help of the arrows, you will be able to control the menu of labels, make the appropriate changes.

Marking is done by pressing the "M" key at the place you want to mark. After that, a window with all available editing parameters will appear in the upper left part of the screen. In it you can set video parameters, change the depth of field, playback speed, shooting angles and others. This will create a truly unique and engaging video.

You can set the duration of the clip yourself by selecting the start and end marks and moving the cursor outside the clip.

Standard label properties

Each new label carries information about the previous label on the scale, if any. Setting the final mark is the end result, all initial marks will not affect it.

If you want to add a specific visual effect that will be applied throughout your clip, apply it to the start mark only.

If you want to change the settings of subsequent labels, use the simplified method: after making changes in the menu of one label, press the "Tab" key, this will automatically open the menu of the next label.

Anchors

Anchor will allow you to place text or sound, you can turn it on for any label.

Anchor types:

  1. Enabled Anchor - The anchor will be displayed in the timeline and all options will be available for editing.
  2. Disabled Anchor - Editing options remain available, but the anchor will not be highlighted on the scale.
  3. Exclusive - Once an exclusive anchor has been set, any changes to the cue settings will not be possible, as this action turns the cue into an anchor. This anchor is shown in yellow on the timeline.

Cameras

The camera angles in the video can be changed in almost all cases, with the exception of those when, for example, the recording mode is performed from the first person. In order to check if the function of changing the angles is available, you need to go to the edit menu.

To change the angles, you can use the following types of cameras:

  • Game - repeating camera movements during video recording.
  • Free - allow you to freely move the camera around the available play areas. In order to fix the subject of shooting, select the option "Camera target". To ensure smooth movement - "Move with a target". To create dynamic transitions when changing angles, it is better to use the "Transition Modes" option.

There is also an opportunity to use preset angles, allowing you to shoot a character close and remote in all projections.

In order to accurately convey such special effects as an explosion, accident or powerful blow, use the "Camera shake" option, which must first be configured.

Effects

Use a variety of effects, adjusting their intensity yourself. You have options for brightness, contrast, saturation, vignetting and intensity.

Depth of field

Depth of field is a special feature that allows you to focus on a specific subject or character (focal point). In this case, you can adjust the intensity and select the desired type of focus.
The depth of field can be corrected by enabling this option in the Pause Menu, but DirectX 11 must be running in this case. In the Special Effects Settings sub-item, select one of the three required levels: High, Very High, Highest ...

Sound options

Adjust the volume of your chosen effects in the Sound Options menu. Adjusting the intensity of the sound will help to powerfully highlight the dramatic effect in the video, or vice versa, reduce the tension.

Speed

Video icons

Capture thumbnails of images at any point and apply them later on the timeline of the project.

In order to determine which type is suitable for your video, select the melody you like and drag it to the timeline by moving the cursor while holding down the left mouse button or by using the Ctrl + V combination. To synchronize the musical sound, use the "To the next measure" option, where you can also edit the length of the song, cutting it down to the required size.
