The best rugged smartphone of the year. The most secure smartphones

Like many people leading an active lifestyle, I had to make a difficult choice between office glamor and total security.

Many models included in last year’s reviews have not lost their relevance now, but I will not repeat myself and will talk about new phones below. I would like to immediately thank all readers for the links that you sent to past reviews.

As before, only smartphones will be presented in the review, because without normal functionality, modern people don’t seem to need communication.

Let me remind you of the criteria for a secure phone:
- it should be more of an office device than a secure one;
- screen size is about 4-4.5";
- A-GPS;
- The ability to operate the phone with gloves or the presence of hardware buttons to accept/end calls;
- OS Android 4.X;
- Shockproof and waterproof.

Let's talk a little more about the latter. Having used a mobile phone for more than two years, I came to the conclusion that for me personally, shock resistance is much more important than water resistance. Throughout my long life together with mobile phones(soon it will be 20 years) not one of my phones has ever been damaged by water, but falls happen much more often. How this will affect this rating will become clear later.

So where to start this time? Let's go with Motorola! For a long time, I gave the palm to my Motorola Defy+, complete with a special case. Unfortunately, Moto did not develop the successful model. To be absolutely precise, it did, but in the wrong direction. Moto released the Defy mini and Defy XT, but this was not a development, but some kind of death convulsion. Defy+ is good, but at the moment it is completely outdated.

However, there are two Moto products that still need to be mentioned.

Motorola TC55 Rugged Phone-Computer

The main disadvantage is that it is practically not widespread in the CIS, so there are problems with Russification and other issues. If only there were 2 GB of RAM, it would be absolutely delicious. The water-repellent coating is, of course, not the sealed Defy+, on the other hand, the coating is applied not only to the body, but also to the internal circuit boards, and one can hope that a short swim for the Motorola Droid Razr M can take place without sad consequences. In all other respects, the device is noticeably better than Defy+. Let's take note.

Screen: 4.3" Super AMOLED qHD(540 x 960)weight 126 g
RAM 1 GBsize 60.9(x) 122.5(y) 8.3(z
Dual-Core 1.5GHz processorBattery: 2000 mAh

Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro rugged phone and XCover 2

Oh, sorry, this is just an SUV, and the phone looks like this:

Very brutal and cute at the same time. At the same time, it meets the highest security requirements - the civilian security standard IP68 and the military MIL-STD 810G (not afraid of shocks and falls, extreme changes in temperature and pressure, vibration and exposure to chemicals). As expected, the noname phone supports 2 SIM cards. Unfortunately, the device's hardware leaves much to be desired. A mediocre processor and 512 MB of RAM are already a thing of the past. Moreover, by default the Android OS is version 4.X, for which the RAM will not be enough for fast operation.

So - great design, real shockproof, but poor performance.

Screen: 4.3 inches, IPS, 480x800 Pixelweight 170 g
RAM 512 MBsize 137.3 x 70 x 15
processor 1.2GHz, Dual-core QualcommBattery: 2000 mAh

The next model is for those who believe in the “Russian manufacturer”.

Protected Russian phone SENSEIT R413

The manufacturer “produces” several models of secure phones, of which we may be interested in a couple of devices - P4 and R413. Official website of the manufacturer http://senseit.ru/

P4 is a typical super-protected device in a yellow case, complies with the international protection class IP-67 and the American military standard MIL-STD 810, but inside it contains the filling from last year - Android 2, 5-megapixel camera, 800 MHz processor, so it can not be considered. The second device is a little fresher:

The R413 looks more stylish than the P4, although by modern standards it is a gray mouse. The smartphone has a 4.1" screen, but the rest of the parameters are just as sad. The battery capacity is especially surprising for a phone that you plan to take with you outside of civilization. In general, these are ordinary Chinese smartphones, under a sort of Russian brand.

Screen: 4.1 inches, 480x800 Pixelweight 177 g
RAM 512MBsize 132 x 69 x 14.5
processor MTK6575 ARM V7, with a frequency of 1000 MHzBattery: 1450 mAh

Another visually attractive smartphone from the Swedish manufacturer Handheld

Rugged smartphone Handheld X1

Handheld offers a whole series of mobile devices for various purposes, I will focus on one of the most suitable for extreme sports - the X1 smartphone based on Android 4.X. Official website of the manufacturer http://www.nautiz.com/x1/

The smartphone is made in a European stylish office case, enclosed in a small “bumper”, but at the same time meets all the necessary standards for dust/moisture resistance, vibration resistance and drops from a height (IP67, MIL-STD-810G).

It would be interesting to hold it in your hands to compare with its Chinese counterparts in terms of tactile sensations. The smartphone is positioned for the corporate sector, so it will most likely have an exorbitant price, and even in euros. Specifications at the average level, 1 GB of RAM is already pleasing, but the camera was installed with 5 megapixels. matrix. And really, why do we need a camera in the corporate sector?

weight 180 g
RAM 1GBsize 125 x 65 x 15
Battery: 1530 mAh + extra.

Perhaps for now this phone is the most stylish of truly shockproof devices.

The time has come to move on to “heavy” models. Today there will be few of them. And I'll start with one of the most notable smartphones of last year.

Protected Caterpillar CAT B15

However, I was a little hasty with the last statement; for example, resistance to aggressive environments is no longer officially stated, but you can survive without it. Another plus of a smartphone is that the screen can be controlled with wet fingers. Or in the rain, for example. This is a very important point; I have repeatedly encountered a situation where sweat from my cheek got onto the phone during a conversation and the phone began to live its own life, beyond anyone’s control. It was good when the screens simply flashed before your eyes, it was worse when the smartphone started calling just anyone, and it was not at all easy to stop this disgrace.

Unfortunately, there were some losses - for some reason in new version We decided to remove the flash. A very incomprehensible solution, and replace the hardware buttons. Otherwise, the designers decided to follow an evolutionary path and, again, unfortunately, the technical parameters of the smartphone have changed slightly. A little bit everywhere:

Screen: 4 inches, 480x800 Pixelweight 180 g
RAM 1GBsize 125 x 65 x 15
processor Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 1 GHz dual-coreBattery: 1530 mAh + extra.

In general, it turned out to be a very good device for those for whom shock resistance is really important.

However, this is far from the end. There is an even more interesting and no less secure phone. The main distinguishing feature of which is the GIANT screen.

Rugged phone Oranginal J4 5.3"

A 5.3" screen with which you can not only have a clean shave in the tent, but also redirect the flow of sunlight from one side to the other! The giant screen is enclosed in a housing that meets the highest security requirements.

This is where the positive emotions end, let's move on to the harsh truth of life. The widescreen phone goes by the simple Chinese name J4. With an incredible screen diagonal, the resolution is only 540x960 pixels. All other parameters are approximately the same. Regular dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM.

Screen: 5.3 inches, 540×960 Pixelweight 243 g
RAM 1GBsize 155.6 x 82.9 x 15.55
processor TMediaTek MTK6577 Cortex-A9 1 GHz, 2 coresBattery: 3000 mAh + extra.

I highlighted this model for two reasons - firstly, of course, the giant screen, and secondly, to introduce you to the manufacturer - a large Chinese company http://www.techfaithwireless.com which produces a fairly large range of rugged phones and smartphones, which then travel around the world under other brands.

If you like to draw on your tablet screen and don’t want to part with your hobby during a hiking trip, perhaps this smartphone will be for you good decision. Although I wouldn't rush to conclusions. Because there are no limits to perfection. If all of the above is not enough for you (or in some places too much), there is another secure smartphone specifically for those who need a smaller screen, and larger everything else - more processor, resolution, memory, especially for such demanding comrades there is a super-smartphone Runbo X6

Secure phone Runbo X6

Not everyone likes the Chinese name? But in the case of Cat 10-15, the “ears” of the popular Chinese model AGM Rock V5 also stick out in all directions. Therefore, we will be lenient, especially since the device is worth it.

Runbo X6 is a claim to the very top in almost all respects.

This is a well-protected device, with a screen large enough for this type of phone, with a huge camera of as much as 13 megapixels, 4 nuclear processor And RAM as much as 2GB, on which Android 4.2 should feel great, with a bunch of built-in sensors - G-Sensor, light, proximity, gyroscope, pressure, magnetic, temperature, accelerometer, compass and with a built-in full-fledged radio station - power 1W, range up to 7Km, frequency UHF 400-470 MHz.

Sums it up big phone just a huge battery. How will you have to pay for all this? Of course, with money, but they are not shocking. But the weight of 400 grams and dimensions make you think hard.

Screen: 5" 1920x1080weight 392 g
RAM 2 GBsize 166 x 89 x 27
processor quad-core CortexTM-A9 processor with a frequency of 1.5 Hz,Battery: 4200 mAh

In general, it is a miracle, not a device. But big and heavy. Some people will be quite happy with it. But someone is not.

Well, it would seem that that’s enough, but in today’s review I want to take an unexpected turn. Having been using a secure smartphone for more than two years, as well as corresponding with and reading reviews from owners of similar devices, I am constantly faced with the desire - oh, if only I had a transforming phone, for work it’s all office/super-productive, for a trip/hiking/swimming/flying - once and for all protected. A dream that seems impossible to achieve, but in reality it is not. There is a way out and everyone knows it.

Protected cases

Let's talk about simple solution, which may suit most fans of extreme sports, fishing, hunting and just showing off. A solution I tested on Motorola Defy+. Take the phone that best suits you in everyday life and additionally purchase the correct protective case for it. There is now a large selection of waterproof devices available, but their fall protection leaves much to be desired. For example Sony Xperia Z1, Samsung Galaxy S4 Active and many others. By purchasing such a device, we get the highest possible performance and functionality at the moment, and when we get ready for training or a trip, we put it in a shockproof case and all problems are solved! Unfortunately, the above models have one significant drawback - their size. A phone with a 5" screen and even in a protective case is a very large and inconvenient thing. It won't fit into every pocket. But if you take models with a smaller diagonal, then you'll have to sacrifice technical side affairs. Is there a compromise? Yes, it exists, but more on that later. Let's get back to protective cases.

The ideal case, in my opinion, is similar in design to the one I had. This case consists of two parts - a hard outer shell and a soft shell. Matching cases are available various manufacturers for most modern popular devices.

As a result, we have an aluminum body, full water resistance, a high-performance platform, a recognizable brand, screen control under water and with gloves, a camera with a 20.7 MP matrix. All that remains is to wait for the release of a case corresponding to this size and a good version of a smartphone for the office extreme is ready. The option is certainly not cheap, but it is actually a top model. The disadvantages include the rather large physical size of the case for such a screen diagonal, but we will assume that the size could not be reduced, since it was necessary to cram in all the filling from the older model.

I’ll probably end today’s review on this positive note. There are many interesting secure phones; there has never been such a variety of choices before. As they say, there is something for all tastes. Based on the current operating conditions of my mobile devices, I still see the option for myself with the Sony Experia Z1 Compact + armor-piercing case.

By the way, in addition to secure phones, there are also smart watch, for example see . I recommend!

When choosing a secure smartphone, be sure to pay attention to the following points:

  • Protection from mechanical influences. If your smartphone will be used in extreme conditions or you simply frequently drown and break gadgets, it makes sense to purchase a model that is protected not only from dust and moisture, but also has a shockproof housing.
  • Iron power. A durable sealed case increases the cost of the device. Therefore, in order to save money, manufacturers often use weak hardware in such devices. Sometimes the performance is so low that the phone simply cannot be used normally. Therefore, even if you are going to use a smartphone as a “dialer”, it must have at least 2 GB of RAM, as well as a processor with several cores and a frequency of 1.3 GHz or more.
  • Autonomy. In hiking conditions, one of the most important characteristics is the operating time on a single battery charge. Keep in mind that battery capacity is not an accurate indicator of autonomy, as power consumption varies between models. Therefore, you need to focus on the number of operating hours indicated by the manufacturer in the characteristics.
  • Having a good flashlight. If you purchase a secure smartphone for travel purposes, it would be a good idea to have a bright flashlight.
  • Camera. The ability to quickly take a photo at any time is very useful option, even if you have a good camera.
  • User reviews. If you have decided on a model, before choosing it, in addition to the characteristics, you need to pay attention to quality. User reviews and several reviews will help you find out about it.
  • Brand. You should not purchase a device from a little-known manufacturer. Firstly, there will probably be problems with service and searching for spare parts if the gadget breaks. Secondly, you won’t find enough reviews online to form a correct opinion about the main advantages and disadvantages of the model.

The recent trend has been models with rubberized bodies and protective glass Gorilla Glass, resistant to mechanical stress. These “SUVs” are able to withstand the most adverse operating conditions. Such smartphones can be recommended to children and, in general, to anyone whose equipment does not last long.

When compiling a list of the top 16 best IP68 rugged smartphones and phones, we took into account criteria such as performance, camera quality, battery life, value for money, and user reviews.

The best manufacturers

  • 1 Apple - the famous iPhones are also reliably protected and protected from moisture and dust.
  • 2 Huawei is a first-tier Chinese manufacturer that produces high-quality fashion models with protection from dust and moisture. As a rule, they are performed on the basis of in-house-produced processors. Not a single TOP 10 - TOP 15 best smartphones is complete without the participation of products from Huawei.
  • 3 DOOGEE is another brand from the Middle Kingdom that specializes in producing affordable smartphones. Despite the fact that it belongs to the second echelon, protected models really deserve attention in all respects.
  • 4 Runbo - unlike the above-mentioned companies, this brand specializes in the production of secure gadgets, including phones. It was also founded in China.
  • 5 Blackview is a Chinese manufacturer that produces inexpensive but good smartphones, the line of which includes several rugged models.
  • 6 Ginzzu - Taiwanese trademark, under which a number of models of secure phones are released, not only with a touch screen, but also with push-button control.

    Conclusion

If you need a device for use in extreme conditions, it makes sense to pay attention to inexpensive “Chinese” ones, such as the Doogee S30 or Ulefone Armor 5. If you need a dialer, it is better to buy a phone, because you will remember the need to charge it every few times months. Of course, with flagships, protection is an additional option and not what they are bought for.

5 questions to ask yourself before buying

    1. Under what conditions will the gadget be used? For ordinary everyday use It’s hardly worth purchasing a heavy and bulky “all-terrain vehicle” with a shockproof body. It is more advisable to protect a regular “civilian” model with a cover.
    2. How much are you willing to spend? This question will not only save you time when choosing, but also resist the temptation to purchase a more expensive model.
    3. What characteristics are most important to you? By drawing up the basic criteria for yourself, you can purchase the most optimal model for your tasks.
    4. How long do you plan to use the device? If you change phones like gloves for one reason or another, it’s hardly worth choosing among expensive models.
    5. What will you wear your phone? If you are going to carry a gadget in your pocket, give preference to compact models.

    Review of rugged smartphones 2013-2014

About three years have passed since the publication of the article devoted to secure mobile devices (), and during this time the market has become quite full a large number interesting models. This time the review will focus exclusively on smartphones, which have almost completely supplanted regular dialers from this market. Well, now, having such a device at hand, you can get the most out of it, and not just make calls and send messages with it in extreme situations.

Here they will fundamentally be left behind flagship smartphones with housing protection degree IP67 and IP68. Yes, they provide protection against the penetration of dust and moisture, some can quite adequately withstand immersion in water for several minutes, but they still cannot be called fully protected. They are still easy to damage under harsh operating conditions, their glass is easy to break, and their thin body (and almost all flagships have this) with impressive screen sizes can be irrevocably damaged. Smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S5 mini (IP67 in both models), Sony Xperia ZR (IP68), a device with similar characteristics is planned to be released by the Taiwanese manufacturer HTC. All of them are united by the fact that security is not put at the forefront of positioning, but is only a pleasant bonus to their already top characteristics. But we will still focus on those models that scream with all their appearance: with them, even into fire, even into water, even into war.

: The only device in this review is sold with the Android KitKat operating system already installed and additionally complies with the 810G military standard.

What makes it stand out from most other rugged smartphones?: operating time as close as possible to the operating time of a conventional push-button telephone. The device also received support for two SIM cards.

This IP68-rated smartphone also boasts Dragontrail tempered glass made by Japanese company Asahi Glass. It saves much better from mechanical damage than the more familiar one. Very tight-fitting rubber plugs protect against the penetration of moisture and dust - to move them from their place, you need to apply quite a serious force. There is also a carabiner mount on the body.

The hardware characteristics of the smartphone are absolutely not impressive and rather define it as mobile devices entry level: dual core Qualcomm processor Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8225, Adreno 203 graphics accelerator, 768 MB RAM, 4 GB permanent memory. This set is complemented by a four-inch screen with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. The smartphone operates in both 2G and 3G networks and has a standard set of wireless communications, including GPS. Powered by Google Android 4.0.4, there are also two cameras: the main one is 8 megapixels and the front one is 0.3 megapixels.

What makes it stand out from most other rugged smartphones?: very rich equipment. There is both a “red laser” and a button emergency call SOS, and of impressive size external antenna, and support for two SIM cards for particularly economical and prudent owners. In addition, it has an impressive battery capacity - a whopping 3800 mAh!

What makes it stand out from most other rugged smartphones?: the ability to be used as a full-fledged radio station with a range of up to five kilometers. Communication operates in the frequency range 400-480 MHz, suitable for areas where there is no coverage mobile operator. It also has two slots for SIM cards from mobile operators.

What makes it stand out from most other rugged smartphones?: impressive size touch screen, plus it is the largest rugged smartphone at the time it went on sale.

The smartphone is protected in accordance with the international IP68 standard, which is facilitated by its monolithic design. Here you cannot remove the entire back panel, but a large plug at the bottom is removable, under which you will find a slot for a SIM card and a memory card. The battery can only be removed at a service center.

Of the characteristics, the first thing worth noting is the screen: its diagonal is 5.3 inches and the resolution is 540x960 pixels. This opens up a lot of opportunities for communication social networks, working with Internet content and simply viewing entertainment media content. At the same time, the fully equipped smartphone has an average weight of 245 grams. The hardware components here include a dual-core MediaTek MT6577 with a frequency of 1 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, and a standard set of wireless communications (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS). There are two cameras - the main one is 8 megapixels and the front one is 2 megapixels. The smartphone works under Android control 4.1 Jelly Bean, battery capacity is 2900 mAh.

Despite the fact that secure smartphones cannot be called very popular, the demand for them confidently remains. This can be seen at least from the variety of models that we see on sale. All manufacturers mentioned in this review, there are at least 2-3 devices of this type. Unfortunately, in technical terms they cannot be called advanced, because compared to most ordinary Android smartphones they look more than modest. However, we are pleasantly pleased with the fact that their protective capabilities are becoming more and more interesting every time.

Thanks to the compiled top 10 indestructible smartphones, the user can easily choose the desired model. This will save him from extra costs and will provide you with a reliable phone that will last for many years.

    The most secure smartphones

There will be more secure smartphones for a long time at the peak of popularity. Their demand is easy to explain - when purchasing a smartphone, most of all the new owner wants to provide it with as much endurance as possible.

A shockproof phone is especially necessary for people living an active life. These are hunters, fishermen, people involved in extreme sports, and those who often go hiking. All these people want to ensure that if something happens, accidentally dropping a smartphone on the ground or into water will not become fatal. Therefore, we present to your attention the top 10 indestructible smartphones that will not be afraid of anything.

Perhaps it’s worth telling unknowing users what secure phones are and how they differ from regular smartphones. It is easy to recognize a protected smartphone from the outside - as a rule, it will always be of impressive size and will have a metal shockproof case or a rubber lining. A protected smartphone will weigh much more than usual. These devices belong to a certain IP protection class.

After IP, two numbers are marked - the first displays the level of protection from dust and dirt, and the second – the degree of protection from water ingress.
