The Internet project site conducted its own experiment and tested ultra-high-speed Internet tariffs in real conditions, and also found out what it takes to get 500 Mbps Internet.
Just three or four years ago, one of the main topics of any conversation among young people was Internet speed. The transition from 2 megabits ADSL to 10 or 20 megabits via fiber was considered the height of the reasonable and unreasonable needs of any Internet user. It was like buying your own apartment or business class car. Now such speed will not surprise anyone.
Recently, users have been choosing between optics to the home and optics to the apartment. In the first case, the main channel is divided among all residents of the house or entrance, and the speed depends on the load of each client and is distributed among all connections. In case of heavy loads, the speed drops for everyone connected to one node. In the second case, the subscriber has a personal connection and the data transfer speed depends only on the number of working devices in the house and their speed limitations.
Many operators provide tariffs with stated speeds of 100 Mbit/s and even 200 Mbit/s. And since April 2018, residents of the Chelyabinsk region have had access to ultra-high-speed home Internet of 500 Mbit/s. By the way, these speeds are available only to subscribers of the Southern Urals. In other regions the ceiling is 200 Mbit/s.
For our experiment, we used the NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 gigabit router with support for the 802.11ac Tri-Band standard. He works in three frequency ranges Wi-Fi - transmission/reception 3x3 (2.4 GHz) + 3x3 (5 GHz) + 3x3 (5 GHz). I must say that this thing is very serious. Dimensions and weight are impressive. But this router perfectly demonstrates the capabilities of networks with speeds of 500 Mbps in real conditions. The advantage of this piece of hardware is that it practically does not heat up and has an intelligent system for analyzing traffic and redistributing flows between connected devices. In addition, it was used ASUS laptop and smartphone Apple iPhone X.
For the purity of the experiment, tests were carried out in five different districts of the city of Chelyabinsk on the Rostelecom network under the “Game” tariff and the “Maximum benefit 100 Mbit/s” tariff. By the way, the speed of 500 Mbit/s in the Chelyabinsk region, at least for now, is available only to subscribers of the Rostelecom operator. The company increased the speed threshold for its customers in April 2018. Currently, ultra-high speeds are provided to subscribers of the “Game” package automatically.
The measurements were carried out on April 5-9, 2018 in Chelyabinsk from 8:00 to 12:00. This was done to avoid loading external channels. For measurements, the three most frequently used actions by ordinary users were selected:
1. Standard speed measurement via Speedtest.net
2. Downloading a file from the Internet: distribution kit with corporate CRM (260 MB)
3. Downloading a file via a torrent client: World Of Tanks game distribution (7.2 GB)
During testing, downloaded files were deleted each time, the browser cache was cleared, and proxy servers were not used. Thus, it can be argued that the results depended only on the channel speed and nothing more. Looking ahead, we’ll say right away that the test results surprised us. But let's talk about everything in order.
General speed test

In general, we have not recorded any serious deviations from the declared speeds at any tariff. Everything is expected. Our NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 router in conjunction with the iPhone X delivered a stable speed of 500 Mbps. The same goes for the basic 100 Mbit/s tariff. We also note that the variation in speed from area to area was very small. It is likely that the traffic load on Rostelecom’s networks is uniform.
Downloading a file from the Internet
id="sub1">Much more dependent on speed is direct downloading of files from the Internet. Here are the results we got with a standard download of a 260 MB file:

To be honest, the data obtained surprised me. As it turned out, the time it takes to download files at tariffs of 100 and 500 Mbit/s is not proportional. Despite the fact that the speeds differ by a factor of 5, the difference in loading time differs by a factor of 3. And the reason is simple - the servers from which the distribution is downloaded limit the speed with which they “give” this file. This is done to protect the server from overloads, because there can be a hundred or even a thousand such simultaneous downloads. This must be kept in mind.
Downloading files via a torrent client
id="sub2">In contrast to the standard downloading of files from the Internet, where server owners protect themselves from overloads and limit the maximum possible download speed, torrent technology was invented. Its essence lies in the fact that the file (game distribution or movie) is located not on one server, but on many. Moreover, the servers in this case are user computers located throughout the Internet. Therefore, you can download the file in parts: part from one computer, the next part from another, etc. This is the advantage of technology.
