Asus rt n66u wireless network settings professionally. Setting

Part 1. Appearance, settings and features

At the beginning of October last year, a very interesting and beautiful device visited our laboratory - the ASUS RT-N56U router. The manufacturer managed to combine a high-performance platform and a unique design in it. To build on its success, the company introduced the RT-N66U earlier this year. Those who follow the news closely may remember that the first time she "lit up" a year ago, but the final design was determined only recently. Perhaps at first it was supposed to use the classic format, but the success of the 56th model influenced the company's plans, and the device was redesigned in a new style.

The RT-N66U has two radio units supporting 450 Mbps speeds, and according to this parameter, the router is in a very small group of leaders. Rest external characteristics similar - gigabit wired ports, two USB 2.0 ports. However, there are many new things in the firmware, without which the hardware platform is useless. Let's see how well these two components are combined in this model.

Due to the large volume, the material was divided into two parts: in the first, we will discuss the appearance and capabilities, and in the second, we will test the performance of the router.

Contents of delivery

The use of compact packaging for a device of this class, apparently, was not allowed by marketers, so its size - 39.5 × 24 × 6 cm - is even larger in projection than its predecessor. The design used exclusively black, emphasizing the high class of the model. In addition to the photo of the router, laminated with film, on the box you can find a table specifications and key features models. The brightest of them will be support for speeds of 450 Mbps in each of the two bands.

The delivery set is traditional: a router, three antennas, a stand for vertical installation, a 19 V 1.58 A power supply, a gigabit patch cord, a CD with programs, quick guide by installation. We tested the European version of the device, so there was no localization of printed products, but it is expected that everything will be translated in official deliveries. We note the stylish flat format of the network cable and rather large external antennas that continue the "diamond" style.

The CD contains: a router setup assistant, a device search program on the network, a firmware recovery utility, a setup program network printer and electronic documentation. At the time of writing, on the manufacturer's website, one could find firmware updates and electronic versions of the user manual. No new utilities or programs have yet been introduced, so if the features they provide are important, try not to lose the CD. Interestingly, some of the programs (for example, the download management utility) can be downloaded from the link from the device's web interface itself.

Appearance

Considering the success of its predecessor, the company has used a similar design in the RT-N66U, while at the same time getting rid of past shortcomings. Firstly, not glossy, but matte black plastic is used. It does not leave fingerprints and collects less dust. Secondly, the body is more massive and large, so that the cables connected to it will not disturb the balance and will not be able to pull it off the table.

An increase in size is a completely natural consequence of installing a more powerful filling. A new version The router has grown to 21.7 × 14.9 × 3.5 centimeters, and the increase in weight to almost half a kilogram is due to the need to install a large radiator in the cooling system. Another indirect sign of productivity growth is the presence of ventilation grilles on all surfaces of a significant area, except for the front. Most of the latter repeats the “ribbed” texture of its predecessor, and on top there is a strip with a silver company logo and the name of the model, designed “under the metal”. The set of indicators has also changed a bit - status, four LEDs for the activity of wired ports, Internet connection, one each for 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands and the last one for the USB port. All of them this time are quite large, all are blue (it is impossible to find out the speed of the cable connection) and shine relatively dimly.

The installation options have also become better - in addition to horizontal placement on the table, you can use the complete stand for vertical installation (although in this case all cables will be at the top of the structure) or hang the router on the wall.

Back end is used for connectors wifi antennas, wired ports, two USB 2.0 ports, reset button, WPS button, power supply input and power switch. In general, everything is standard, but one can argue about the place for the WPS button. However, if you do not connect the cable to LAN4, then it will not be difficult to use it.

In fact, we can say that in this device, ASUS used the classic form factor of routers, introducing its own vision in the form of a beautiful top panel and antenna design. So in general, the appearance deserves an excellent rating.

Hardware configuration

Interestingly, the device has a hardware version of B1 (and judging by the printed circuit board, it has revision 3.00). It seems that the path to release was long and difficult. Perhaps this is the first device whose cooling system can be compared with a modern entry-level video card - almost the entire front part of the board is covered with an aluminum radiator 16x6 centimeters in size and with fins up to one centimeter high. There were no problems with overheating during the entire testing period, so the installed radiator copes with its duties quite well, and this is another advantage over its predecessor.

The router is based on the Broadcom platform. The CPU is a BCM4706/BCM53003 running at 600 MHz. It has a MIPS architecture and built-in controllers for the PCIe bus, gigabit network interface and USB 2.0. Volume random access memory is 256 MB, a 32 MB flash memory chip is installed to store the firmware. The radio blocks are based on the same chips - BCM4331, which implement 802.11n at speeds up to 450 MHz (3T3R) and work absolutely independently. Antennas are used in common, connected through standard connectors on the device case. Gigabit network ports work through the BCM53125 switch and support automatic MDI-X connection type (polarity) detection.

Additionally, the board has an Alcor chip - a USB hub combined with a card controller microSD memory and a slot for them. Installing a memory card requires opening the case and may be interesting from the point of view of installing an additional software. The card is visible in the system as a regular removable media. Note the presence of a console port, which is not very relevant due to the presence in the device of access to the console via telnet.

The device was provided for testing with firmware 3.0.0.3.90, but the 3.1.0.3.90 update was released just a few days later, and all the results in this publication refer to this version.

Customization and features

The device setup interface is now designed in black colors, but is generally similar to its predecessor. The choice of language is carried out automatically according to the browser settings or by selecting from the drop-down list. Russian translation is quite high quality, only in some new functions there are English words. Many menu items have built-in hints (of course, not the most incomprehensible ones). It is possible to access the interface from the WAN port side with changing the port number, but, unfortunately, without encryption.

The main screen schematically shows the organization of the local network - the status of the Internet connection, Wi-Fi settings, clients and USB devices. Most of the elements are links to corresponding pages with more precise information and some settings. Additionally, there is information about the firmware version and a button to reboot the device.

Sorting menu items can be a little confusing for beginners. Still, the main settings of the router are connecting to the Internet and providing a wireless network, but here they are removed in the “Advanced Settings” section, and the first menu items are various non-core functions. So let's restore justice and start with more important options.

Working with the Internet is possible with a direct address and through the PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, 802.1x protocols, which closes most of the modern options. Settings allow you to change most network addresses, including the MAC address of the WAN port. IPTV support consists of several functions: selection of one or two LAN ports for the set-top box, support for broadcasting multicast to LAN, a built-in server for transforming multicast streams into HTTP (udpxy). To ensure the convenience of working with a dynamic external address, the DDNS client is called upon, the list of which includes three popular services and ASUS' own version. Configuring Network Address Translation (NAT) technology allows you to allow protocols such as PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, and RTSP to pass through the router. Providing access to internal resources from the Internet is based on a port translation table, using which it is possible to forward not only single ports, but also ranges, and the numbers of internal and external ports may differ. The device also has a function of "switchable" ports, support for DMZ and UPnP.

Settings wireless interfaces are duplicated for each range. The main parameters traditionally consist of choosing a network name, operating mode, channel number, security mode (open network, WEP, WPA / WPA2 with a password or through a RADIUS server), channel width for 802.11n. The model provided for the test supports 13 channels in the 2.4 GHz band and 4 in the 5 GHz band. There is no separate setting for the region of work in it. Note that the modes provide for the installation of “only n” or “all at once”. WPS support will help you quickly and securely connect new wireless clients. Moreover, the user of the router can choose the frequency range in which its work will be carried out. You can create whitelists or blacklists of wireless client MAC addresses, which can improve security. Wireless bridging support (WDS) can be useful for expanding the coverage of a wireless network, but, in our opinion, this technology is not very interesting today due to its limitations and a significant drop in speed. On the "professional" settings page, you can specify the schedule for the wireless modules (one time range for selected days of the week), limit the maximum transmitter power, enable the isolation mode of wireless clients, and select options for broadcasting via Wi-Fi.

The router has implemented the recently popular "Guest Networks" function. It is based on the ability to have several wireless networks with different names and encryption modes on one access point. In the case of the model under consideration, it is possible to organize an additional three guest networks on each of the two ranges. They will work on the same channel and standard as the main controller. Clients of these networks, by default, have access only to the Internet, but cannot exchange information with devices on the local segment, which looks logical from a security point of view. However, this behavior can be disabled. In addition, the administrator can set the duration of the work of external clients with an accuracy of up to a minute.

Setting up a local network segment consists of choosing your own IP address of the router, a range of addresses and fixed assignments for the DHCP server, programming your own routes. Note the presence of two options for the built-in switch - disabling the "hardware accelerator" and enabling Jumbo Frames. The last option affects only the LAN segment and allows in some cases to increase the performance of network operations.

IPv6 support is not very relevant yet, but it may well come in handy in the future. Implemented options for direct connection, DHCP, and three versions of tunnels.

Manufacturers of home router models, especially high-performance ones, persistently continue to implement traffic control functions in their devices, although in many cases it is more appropriate to configure the necessary programs on a PC rather than load the router with this task. This fashion did not bypass the model in question. In the "Traffic Manager" section, you can enable automatic or manual traffic prioritization. In this case, be sure to specify the speed parameters of the Internet channel. It is assumed that in automatic mode the device sets high priorities for working with sites and low for p2p traffic. Moreover, it is not very clear how the latter is specifically identified. The test showed that the activation of the function significantly reduces the speed of Internet access - up to several times with a direct connection and up to one and a half times with a VPN. But despite this, it remains still high - more than 100 Mbps per download in all supported modes.

To investigate the operation of this function, we conducted another additional test - during intensive downloading of torrent files on a 100 Mbps channel with a direct connection (100 jobs, about 600 connections, speed over 10 Mbps), we also launched our standard test for obtaining information from the Internet. During the simultaneous operation of these two tasks, the speed between them was distributed equally, regardless of the inclusion of "Auto QoS", and each separately took the entire bandwidth. It turns out that with such a powerful processor at 100 Mbps, this function may not be required. Unfortunately, detailed description there is no algorithm for this module in the documentation, only one page with a screenshot.

A little more information can be obtained by switching the module to manual mode. In it, the user can set his own rules for separating traffic by priority. Each rule specifies parameters such as the IP or MAC address of the sender, the port of the recipient, the protocol, the amount of data (in kilobytes) and the priority of five options. Several rules are already pre-installed by the manufacturer, although, in our opinion, their parameters are ambiguous. After that, you need to set the limits of data transmission and reception rates for each priority category. A more precise setting of these parameters allows you to provide priority for the selected types of traffic (of course, if they can be described by rules and thus identified in the general stream) and ensure comfortable browsing on the Internet while being active in p2p networks.

You can check the current indicators of the real speed of the interfaces on the second tab. Separately, graphs are given for the local segment, wireless access points and the Internet channel. The device saves detailed statistics for the last 24 hours and general data on the volume of received and transmitted data since the last reboot.

Function " Parental control» allows you to limit access time local devices to the internet. The rules specify the MAC address and schedule for the week to the nearest hour. At the same time, the client retains full access to the local network, but Internet access will only work for him during the specified periods of time. In the case of using some mobile devices, only the MAC address is displayed in the table instead of the name, and there is no way to change this field, which is not very convenient.

There is a separate group of pages for configuring work with USB devices. It will be discussed in detail later in the article.

An interesting feature of the router is the built-in server remote access, working under the PPTP protocol. With it, you can get full access to your home network from anywhere on the Internet. Of course, you will need an external IP address on the router and the absence of blocking this protocol all the way. Up to ten remote user accounts can be programmed into the device. Settings include the choice of encryption mode and options for the IP addresses of connecting clients.

Clients can be any PC or mobile devices that support PPTP with MSCHAP authentication and MPPE 40/128 bit encryption (optional). A study of the speed of this mode is given in the second part of the article. Attention should also be paid to the fact that connected clients are not displayed on the general network map, and you can only find out about their existence from the log. The operation of the server creates a significant load on the processor of the device. In the mode of connecting to the Network via L2TP, intensive work of a remote user catastrophically reduces the speed of browsing the Internet for local users. For example, when connecting in L2TP mode, if an external user downloads something from the local network to high speed, then the performance of downloading data from the Internet by a local user is reduced by four times, and the web interface of the router becomes very “thoughtful”. In a more vital situation, when maximum data transfer speeds are not required, everything is not so bad.

Additional protection services consist of a hyperlink blocking module for keywords they also have a firewall module with programmable rules. The rules are organized in the form of a "white" or "black" list, work on the LAN-WAN segment and include the address and port numbers of the sender and recipient, the protocol and work schedule (days of the week and one time range). This will allow the administrator to block certain Internet services for all or some of the clients.

The "Administration" section traditionally consists of the items for changing the administrator password, setting the clock, updating the firmware, managing the configuration, and selecting the operating mode. In the latter case, there are only two possibilities - wireless router or access point. Additionally, we note the option to enable access via telnet and check for firmware updates on the Internet.

In the “System Log” item, you can find not only a detailed list of router events (perhaps even too detailed - a copy of the system log, which may scare some users), but also several useful tables: DHCP addresses issued by the server, operating modes of wireless controllers and connected clients to them, the current state of the port translation rules, and the routing table. No means to automatically store data on external syslog servers or send via e-mail the device does not, which is at least strange for a device of this class.

Working with USB devices

The router is equipped with two USB ports for connecting drives, printers and 3G/4G modems. Working with drives can be configured using the AiDisk assistant, but it is more convenient to do this manually. The main thing is to find the necessary page, which did not work out the first time. Drives can have partitions with FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3 file systems. All of them are supported for reading and writing. Data access is possible via SMB and FTP protocols. In the second case, the server works simultaneously in the local network segment and on the Internet, which is not always desirable.

Access rights are set on subdirectories on each section and for each protocol separately. Users are programmed into the device itself. Information about users and rights is stored in special files on an external drive, so that when you reconnect, they will be saved. In additional settings, you can change the network name of the router and the name working group. You can also use several disks through the hub, without forgetting about the power supply. You need to safely disconnect drives through the web interface.

While testing the speed indicators of an external hard drive, we encountered one problem - if network card If the test PC has Jumbo Frames enabled, the speed of writing to the disk will be significantly reduced. Maybe it's a partial incompatibility of the equipment or it's a problem current version firmware. The figures shown in the graph are obtained with the PC set to standard frame sizes when working with files of about 700 MB.

The speed of working with the disk is quite high for a router, but, of course, significantly lower than that of the vast majority of network drives. In general, when using the most "convenient" file system EXT2 can be expected at speeds of 13-20 MB/s depending on the protocol and direction. This, in particular, will allow you to implement a fast FTP server for exchanging documents with friends over the Internet with support for Russian file names and passive mode (but without encryption).

To USB port You can also connect a printer or MFP. If your PC is running OS Windows families you can fully use multifunction device- print, check the status of cartridges and scan documents. This requires the installation of the ASUS EZ printer sharing utility. How this scheme will work in case of connection of several clients - remains a mystery. For others operating systems the standard LPR printing function will be available.

The USB port can also be used to organize a backup channel through 3G/4G networks. The current list of supported modems consists of several dozen models. Unfortunately, we did not find a suitable one for testing. Judging by the documentation, only one work scenario has been implemented at the moment - if the main channel fails (according to information from the company, this includes the loss of the link and disconnection of the VPN), the backup one starts to be used.

The updated version of the Offline File Downloader supports BitTorrent, FTP/HTTP, NZB and ED2K protocols. It is installed via the web interface on one of the connected drives (at the user's choice). This process includes creating a special directory with service files on external drive and folders directly for uploaded files. Tasks are managed through an interface available on a separate port or using plug-ins for popular browsers. General settings services consist of setting a work schedule, a directory for files (it is impossible to move it to another medium in a regular way), selecting a port for the management interface, and enabling access from the Internet. The interface is password protected (the same as the router itself), so the last option can be handy for remote work. The settings of individual protocols are not very diverse. For transmission (this popular client is installed in the RT-N66U), you can change the port number, speed limits, encryption, DHT and the maximum number of connections per task. For nzbget and aMule, only the server to connect to is configured. Downloading from HTTP and FTP links is done by the snarf utility.

Management through the web interface is quite simple - add, delete a task, pause or resume. The distribution of the torrent after downloading is carried out until the task is deleted. For more convenient operation you can use external transmission management utilities. The modules do not have original web-interfaces installed. The limit on the number of active tasks is 30, which seems quite reasonable. With a direct 100 Mbps connection and three dozen jobs, we were able to download files at speeds up to 1.5 MB/s, but the graph looked like a saw. Reducing the number of tasks and limiting the number of connections slightly increased the average speed, but the shape of the graph did not change. During a heavy download, we ran our usual Internet speed test. At the same time, it showed the usual numbers, as if there were no torrents, but the p2p client, in turn, reduced its performance. So that given function it is fully functional, the device does not set records for speed, but it does not affect the main function of the router.

Recorded on external drives media files can be shared with media players installed on the local network using the DLNA protocol and for sharing with iTunes. Support for jpeg, mp3, wma, wav, mp4, avi, mpeg, mpg, ts, vob, wmv, mkv and others is officially announced. Traditionally, tags are used to sort audio recordings, which must be written in Unicode for the correct display of Russian characters. Photos are sorted by date taken and camera. Video recordings are accessed by directories. The performance of the router is enough to transfer a Full HD stream as Blu-ray, but given the low speeds of working with network drive, we would recommend limiting to standard definition MPEG4 video. The media server does not have any settings and controls (except for turning it off), which can create certain difficulties in diagnosing problems. In particular, its not very clear behavior was noticed when connecting several media.

In the router, you can enable access to the console via telnet, and the utilities installed for the download manager also add the Optware system. So you can add new packages almost out of the box. Judging by the ipkg settings, ASUS plans to create its own repository of software packages in addition to the popular "oleg" branch.

conclusions

ASUS RT-N66U adopted the most interesting features of its predecessor - attractive appearance, powerful hardware and a large list of functions. Compromise in the form external antennas can be explained by the desire to achieve top speed wireless communication. The installation of two independent radio modules with support for 3T3R modes and speeds up to 450 Mbps was the first time we met. There are literally several similar models on the world market, but it is the company's product ASUS first made it to our lab. We will talk about the real possibilities in the routing mode and with wireless networks in the second part of the article, but according to the specifications of the hardware platform, it is already clear that this is one of the most productive devices on the market.

As for the software, despite the overall good impression, some minor annoyances still annoy. I would like to believe that the firmware will be brought to the required level in the near future, corresponding to a world-class brand. If we talk about the regular capabilities of the router, then it should be noted that it supports all popular options for connecting to the Internet, the ability to access the provider's network when working in VPN modes, work with IPTV, and organize guest wireless networks. High-performance stuffing can and should be loaded additional services, which in this case are the traffic control module and the VPN server. The latter will allow you to get full access to your home local network from anywhere on the Internet.

The presence of USB ports brings the device to new level. In addition to fast enough NAS, in this model it is possible to implement a station for downloading files from p2p networks. Moreover, the popular transmission program is used as a client, and the manufacturer offers utilities for adding new downloads from well-known browsers. The operation of this module has little effect on the main tasks of the device, which is good news. We also mention the possibility of creating DLNA servers, work with MFPs and cellular modems.

The manufacturer decided to immediately provide access to the device console, without waiting for the users themselves to do so. This approach can only be welcomed, although, of course, there may potentially be problems with warranty service. Powerful stuffing and the ability to install microSD cards literally pushing to equip this model with numerous additional services, such as hosting sites, monitoring systems and other useful programs in the economy.

Looking ahead a little, let's say that the performance of the device did not disappoint us, so it deservedly receives the "Original Design" award for March 2012 thanks not only to appearance, but also, of course, the hardware platform and software.

Good afternoon, dear readers and subscribers of the blog site, today we will look at how the Internet and Wifi are configured on the Asus RT-N66U. The piece of iron pleased me with its reliability and is great for small offices for 15-20 people, such a branch. Among other things, we will look at the security and administration capabilities of this device.

And so let's see how the rt n66u is configured. After unpacking this router, you must connect to it via a patch cord, one end to any LAN port, and the other to your laptop or computer.

If Asus RT-N66U did not assign you an ip address from the 192.168.1.0/24 network using a DHCP server, then set yourself a static Windows ip address, 192.168.1.100, see the link on the left for how to do this. Next, open the browser and write 192.168.1.1 in it, an authorization form will pop up, enter in it login admin and the password is admin. If you have an already configured router and you have lost the password from it, then the router settings are reset by pressing and holding the Reset button on the back of the router for 10 seconds.

The first thing you need to do is change the password to rt n66u so that only you can administer it, there is nothing for everyone to climb there. Open the Advanced settings tab > Administration > System. Here you must specify twice New Password for admin.

Let's set up the Internet on Asus RT-N66U

Go to the Internet tab. You have five options to choose from

Automatic setting

There is nothing supernatural here, we set Automatic ip, enable WAN, NAT.

Configuration via PPPoE

PPPoe on Asus RT-N66U will require you to set these values

  • WAN connection type: PPPoE
  • Obtain WAN IP address automatically: Yes
  • Username: Your contract login
  • Password: Your contract password
  • MTU: 1472

Save the settings with the "Apply" button.

In order for your router to receive an IP, you need to clone the MAC address of the device assigned to your contract

L2TP and PPTP are configured in the same way, the only thing you need to specify there is the server where you will connect, you can get it from the provider.

Static setting

Here, too, everything is simple, the provider must give you

  • Static ip address
  • subnet mask

Also click clone mac address, if you don't know what it is, read the link on the left.

Let's set it up now wifi network. To do this, in Asus RT-N66U go to the item wireless network. We set the wave range, SSID, this is how Wifi will be called when searching, WPA2-Personal authentication method

In no case do not put Wep, otherwise they will hack

Pay attention to Wifi security from the side of filtering mac addresses so that only those whom you explicitly register here can connect, even if some manager gives your Wifi password to a friend in the office, he will not connect.

Also, the router has to act as a vpn server and makes it possible to connect to the office via this connection, it will be useful for remote workers.

There is a proxy functionality that filters site addresses and words, if you need, for example, to ban the notorious social networks.

if clients or guests come to you and you need to give them the Internet, but do not give access to local network, then you can set up a Guest network that will help you with this.

After you have finished setting it up backup it would not be bad to save, in case something goes wrong, there was an opportunity to quickly restore everything back. Go to Administration > Manage Settings.

so, I think Asus RT-N66U is a very good option both in terms of quality and money for small offices.

Asus RT-N66U is a modern wireless router, designed for resource-intensive applications (online gaming, HD video streaming, file sharing). Working in two frequency bands(2.4 and 5 GHz), RT-N66U is able to provide total throughput wireless connection at the level of 900 Mbps. Numerous functions of this device are available through a user-friendly interface that will not seem complicated even to inexperienced users.

Connecting network equipment: how to properly connect a router, switch and set-top box (IPTV)

If you don't have another network equipment, connect the main network cable (Internet connection cable that enters the apartment from the entrance) to WAN port(Internet) router and connect an additional network cable (patch cord) to any port LAN router(yellow) and computer.

If in your home network there is also a switch (switch) that distributes the Internet to other devices directly, then connect the main network cable (coming from the entrance) to any of the switch ports, connect the WAN (Internet) port of the router and the switch with one patch cord, and any the LAN port of the router and the computer on which you will continue to configure.

How to enter the web interface of the router for configuration

Open any browser installed on your computer (for example, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari) and enter in address bar address 192.168.1.1 and press Enter.

Configuring access to local resources

For example, let's take a couple of popular programs that require additional settings on the router. These are programs and DC++. Program interfaces may differ from those installed on your computer. To begin with, we will configure the programs themselves, then we will configure the router.

Setting up uTorrent

Setting up a torrent client is necessary only in case of problems with downloading torrents. Test the uTorrent program right after initial setup router, you may not need to configure anything.

Setting (Options), then point Configuration (Preferences).
In the window that appears, go to the tab Connection.

Port used for incoming connections select either default or button To generate.
Setting the port number manually is undesirable, as it may turn out that the specified port is already in use by another program or another process. In this case, nothing will work.
AT this example port will be considered 14800 .

Randomize port each startuncheck, since all settings will be useless.
In firewall exceptions (Add Windows Firewall Exception)check the box.
UPnP redirection (Enable UPnP port mapping)uncheck.
Leave the rest of the settings as default.
