Many novice users have a misconception about how antivirus works. They believe that the anti-virus in its work is guided only by anti-virus databases, which are updated daily. This is true, but in part.

That is, after full check installed antivirus, re-scan with another antivirus program, which I will talk about a little later.

Also, any emergency situation can become a reason to check your computer for viruses. For example, the computer began to slow down or suddenly reboot, errors began to appear when launching programs or when the operating system was running ... In general, any abnormal computer behavior should be taken as a signal - it is worth checking the computer with an antivirus.

How to check your computer for viruses

As I already mentioned, from my point of view, it would be correct to check the computer not only with the antivirus installed on the computer, but also with the second, well-proven antivirus solution.

At the same time, I do NOT mean installing a second antivirus on your computer! NOT! This cannot be done!

I mean, using antivirus scanners that can be downloaded and run without installation, or even better from a bootable USB flash drive.

The fact is that if your computer is infected, the virus can hide in the system and block the attempts of the installed antivirus to detect or remove it.

When the computer boots from a specially created flash drive, its own operating system (usually Linux) will be launched from it. This means that all files in your hard disk will be available since they will not be protected by the operating room windows systemthat is installed on your computer's hard drive.

Thus, we can most effectively check all the nooks and crannies on your hard drive and more likely to detect threats.

Such bootable flash drives allow you to create many modern antiviruses. That is, you can go to the menu of the antivirus installed on your computer and use it to create bootable USB drive... But this is provided that your antivirus has such a function. You can find out about this in the help system of your anti-virus program.

I prefer to use the Dr.Web LiveDisk utility. Kaspersky and other leading security software developers have a similar solution, but I'm more used to working with this program, so I'll show you the whole process using it as an example.

Create a flash drive with antivirus

We'll need a clean USB stick with a volume of 1GB or more, or a USB stick with 1GB of free space.
The Dr.Web LiveDisk utility itself can be downloaded from the official website.

After the file is downloaded, connect the USB flash drive to your computer and run the downloaded file.

The utility does not delete files from a USB flash drive, but I usually check the box that allows you to completely format a USB flash drive and put only Dr.Web LiveDisk files on it. I like this option more, because to uninstall Dr.Web LiveDisk, you need to format the USB flash drive anyway. Therefore, it is easier to immediately temporarily transfer the files you need from it, format the USB flash drive and create a Dr.Web LiveDisk. When boot disk you will no longer need it - format the USB flash drive again and return all the files to it.

We have downloaded and installed an antivirus with the latest anti-virus databases on the USB flash drive. This means that if you want to use this flash drive after a while, the anti-virus databases on it will become out of date.

It is possible to update the anti-virus databases without creating a new flash drive, but I usually don't do that. The fact is that I rarely have such problematic situations with viruses, and it is easier for me to re-create a bootable USB flash drive with an antivirus, rather than assign a separate USB flash drive for these purposes and, if necessary, update the antivirus databases on it.

How to check your computer for viruses

So, the flash drive is ready. We reboot the computer and start from the USB flash drive.

To do this, you can use the Boot Menu. Have different manufacturers on motherboards and laptops, this menu is invoked by pressing different buttons on the keyboard, but usually it is either the Esc key or one of the function keys - F9, F11, F12. This key must be pressed immediately after turning on the computer. Usually I don’t hold the key, I just quickly and repeatedly press it until the menu appears.

In the menu, select the USB flash drive and the boot process begins.

The default is set english language interface, but we can remedy the situation by switching to Russian, pressing the F2 key and choosing a language.

To select a language, you can use the cursor keys - up and down arrows. To confirm the selection, press the ENTER key.
