One of the most common representatives of the budget line of tablets from Samsung is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0. The secret of customers' love for this model lies in its reliability, elegant appearance and low cost. The price of the tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 when ordering it through various online stores ranges from 150-185 dollars. Given the glory of the Samsung brand, buying a tablet for the money is just a gift.

Appearance Galaxy Tab 4 7.0

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 tablet looks like a real luxury model. This effect is achieved thanks to the texture of the back cover, reminiscent of genuine leather. The weight of the gadget is only 276 grams, that is, the tablet is almost weightless. Dimensions look like this: 186.9 * 107.9 * 9 mm. The device’s compactness allows it to be conveniently located even in small handbags. Thanks to Samsung’s traditional smoothness of lines, the tablet is pleasant to hold with your hands and use the touchscreen. The case of the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is simply made flawlessly: there are no creaks or backlashes when using it.

Color rendering quality makes 16 million colors available. The screen resolution of 1280 * 800 creates all the prerequisites for maximum pleasure from viewing media files. Only a diagonal of 7 inches leaves an imprint of dissatisfaction, but this feeling is fully compensated by the affordable price of the gadget.

Performance

The central processor of the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, endowed with four cores and characterized by a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz, and RAM - 1.5 GB. Excellent options for the "state employee". All useful applications and popular games of medium complexity work flawlessly. Surfing the Internet and watching movies are also not satisfactory. The tablet does not play serious games. This is not only due to the characteristics of the processor, but also to the modest amount of internal memory - 8 GB, which does not accommodate "heavy" games, and there is no support for loading onto a memory card (this is also true for expensive Samsung tablets). To expand the memory of the tablet allows Micro SD, the limit of which can reach 32 GB.

Cameras

Unfortunately, the developers endowed the tablet with rather average cameras: the main resolution is only 3 megapixels, the frontal indicator is 1.3 megapixels and can provide only video communication. However, the quality of the images obtained is quite satisfactory for posting them on the pages of social networks.

Battery

The autonomy of the tablet for many users causes only words of approval. In standby mode, the battery resource is practically not consumed, the video can be watched without interruption for up to 10 hours, the same time you can use the Internet, and you can listen to music without stopping for about 190 hours.

Network and Wireless Features

To exchange information between Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 and a stationary computer or peripheral devices, the tablet provides Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. Thanks to the convenient service from the manufacturer Samsung Link, the tablet has unhindered access to other gadgets: a laptop or phone. There will be a problem with the fast transfer of voluminous files, since the OTG protocol does not support the device. Also, some users note that the Wi-Fi module is a little weak, but with a stable signal, there are practically no difficulties in exchanging information.

You can insert a micro-SIM card into the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 tablet and use it as a phone. For greater convenience of making calls, you can connect headphones through a standard 3.5 mm jack. In addition, the tablet has a USB 2.0 connector and supports a GPS navigation system.

Galaxy Tab 4 Software

The tablet is powered by Android 4.4, which comes with many useful add-ons, including the Hancom application, which allows you to edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. The disadvantage of the installed operating system is the inability to update it to versions of Android 5.0.

Shortly before the announcement of the long-awaited Galaxy Note 9 smartphone, Samsung introduced another tablet. On August 10, sales of the Galaxy Tab S4 began. This device also comes with an S Pen. We can say that we have the best Android tablet this year. He is replacing last year.

Instead of a 4: 3 aspect ratio, it switches to a wider 16:10. The frames around the screen are thin, the Home button is now missing, but there are four speakers with AKG support. Last year’s Snapdragon 835 processor is used. Is such a device worth the asking price of 53,000 rubles? Let's find out.

Design

As already mentioned, the tablet received a wider screen. Now it has become longer, but due to this it looks more compact. The back surface is glass, the frame is made of aluminum. Thanks to this, the device feels similar to the premium smartphones of our day. Of course, the tablet weighs a lot more, 483 g.

The glass back is partly to blame for this weight. This tablet will not be easy to carry without a case. When it heats up, it starts to burn quite noticeably hands. In addition, if you hold the device incorrectly, you may accidentally touch the icons and switches near the edges of the screen.

Otherwise, the tablet is perceived as a solid device. The power and volume buttons are tight and click clearly when pressed. The internal vibration engine gives a distinct tactile response when you press the navigation buttons. In the settings, this can be turned off if you do not like this interaction. There is a small protrusion of the camera on the back of the case.

Screen

Not surprisingly, Samsung’s Super AMOLED panel is used here, with a diagonal of 10.5 inches. Samsung has been known for the quality of its OLED panels for many years, so even in low-cost mobile devices it installs them, not to mention such an expensive one.

The pixel density is 288 ppi, making individual pixels difficult to see. There are four different screen display modes. You can choose the most powerful AMOLED with vibrant colors or a more muted basic mode.

AMOLED screens are known for a slight distortion of colors at an angle. On Samsung smartphones, this is hard to notice due to the small screen size. On the tablet, a color shift is observed at the edges. Not so much as to spoil the impression, but there is still distortion.

CPU and memory

As usual, the new Samsung tablet runs on last year’s mobile processor. In this case, it is the Snapdragon 835. Enthusiasts are usually not too happy with such an offer, but the Snapdragon 835 is far from obsolete. There will be no problems with the speed of work.

Even heavy games like Rules of Survival run fast and smoothly, like on modern smartphones. There are no problems in office applications either. Even with multitasking, the tablet does not have difficulties.

4 GB of memory are also far from a record high. Modern not even the most expensive smartphones often have 6 GB and even 8 GB. However, by modern standards, this is quite an adequate amount. As for storage, there are versions of 64 GB and 256 GB. In both cases, memory cards are supported.

Interface and Functionality

As you might expect, on top of Android 8.1, the Samsung Experience bootloader is installed here. Depending on your preference, this can be good or bad. Here you can find useful features, such as a secure folder, to hide files and images behind a password or fingerprint. There is also a Device Maintenance suite with security, autonomy, and removal tips for files taking up too much space. Game Launcher adjusts the hardware components, drowns out notifications during the game, and allows you to record the gameplay.

The Samsung Gallery app lets you view photos and create short videos, GIF animations, and slide shows of your favorite images. The calendar displays the information you need no worse than a Google calendar.

We can say that the Samsung Experience shell has matured and is well suited to work-oriented users.

As mentioned above, the Home button is missing. All navigation is carried out through a virtual panel. There are familiar back buttons, Home and recent applications. What about biometric lock?

There is a scan of the iris, also supports Intelligent Scan. In it, eye scanning is mixed with facial recognition.

If you hold the tablet in portrait orientation, unlocking occurs quickly and seamlessly. If you turn it into landscape orientation, problems may begin. In about half the cases, scanning is performed without problems. Sometimes you need to turn your head to the left and find a position so that the camera can see the eyes and face. In any case, unlocking is fast, although not as convenient as with a fingerprint scanner in front.

Stylus

It's nice to see the Samsung S Pen stylus in the tablet package. It is a pity that it can not be fixed on the tablet. If you don’t have an additional accessory like a case, you have to make sure that you do not lose the stylus.

The Wacom-enabled stylus supports touchpad accident prevention and supports Bluetooth connectivity. This standard requires a large battery. However, even when it is discharged, you can write and draw. There are 4096 degrees of depression. Like on Galaxy Note smartphones, the stylus can create GIF animations, write on the screen off, translate text from language to language. Penup is useful for those who want to learn how to draw. There is a built-in guide to create different images that are regularly updated. There is also an active community of artists who share their drawings.

You can use the stylus for various tasks. If you press and hold the button, passing the stylus through the text, you can mark it, copy and paste. Inside applications like Samsung Calendar, you can highlight different objects. Pointing the stylus over the screen gives a pointer that allows you to interact with sites like a mouse.

Samsung DeX without dock

It appeared along with the Galaxy S8 and is an interesting concept. You can take a smartphone with you and turn it into a computer. To do this, it was necessary to carry not only a smartphone, but also a docking station. Also, a monitor, mouse and keyboard would not hurt.

Now you can do without a docking station. You need to open the notification panel and click on the DeX mode switch to get the desktop. You can connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, or use a Samsung keyboard case, which is sold separately.

Also, nothing prevents connecting the monitor. In this case, the tablet is used as an auxiliary screen.

This is a good option if you went somewhere without a laptop, stayed at a hotel or at a guest with a monitor and keyboard. By connecting them, you can do your computer business.

Accessories

Samsung also sells a special Book Cover Keyboard for the Galaxy Tab S4. This is a very good accessory to increase productivity. The keyboard is connected not via Bluetooth, but through a proprietary 4-pin connector on the left side of the device.

The keys have a good move and they clearly click, despite the small thickness. As a result, typing is quite convenient. Since the keyboard is small, like the tablet itself, it will take some time to get used to. If you type for a long time, you can get tired. Despite this, such a keyboard will help you type on the go, if necessary.

The keyboard includes a stylus holder, which makes it even more valuable. This reduces the chance of losing the stylus.

Another accessory is the Charging Dock Pogo, which is also sold separately. It is designed to hold the tablet in landscape orientation and recharges it through a 4-pin connector. When the tablet is installed here, it can show a slide show of selected images or a certain number of photos in the form of wallpaper.

It is unlikely that such a docking station is necessary. It should allow you to easily hold the tablet in your hand, but not just connect it correctly. If you want to watch movies when the tablet is in landscape mode, it can come in handy.

Cameras

There is no optical image stabilization on the rear camera, so the quality can be called normal at best. The detail is good enough, although the images may appear blurry or grainy.

Color rendering is pretty close to reality, but the dynamic range is pretty poor. Even if you switch to HDR mode, which is in a separate menu and does not automatically activate, the camera still overexposures bright areas and darkens too dark. This camera can come in handy when you need to urgently take something and there is nothing else at hand. Obviously, the tablet will not be used as the main camera, this is inconvenient and simply strange.

The front camera captures facial features pretty well. She also overexposures bright areas, but does not so darken dark ones. For video calls, it is quite suitable. There is a portrait shooting mode that tries to blur the background behind the subject in the foreground. Separation is not too good, especially if the background is complex.

Multimedia

One job, no entertainment - that would be too boring. Galaxy Tab S4 is not so boring. A wide screen with a diagonal of 10.5 inches allows you to watch interesting videos. Four speakers also contribute to this, providing an immersive listening experience.

On the back of the case is Tuned by AKG, but the speaker quality was a bit disappointing. The sound is quite full and well separated. However, there is not enough lower sound range, which deprives the sound of full saturation. The volume is also not happy. Activating Dolby Atmos gives a slight increase in volume, this will be enough to watch the video in the room.

No need to think that the sound is really bad. It is better than most other tablets. True, the main competitor in the form of the iPad Pro is still ahead. There are clearer bass, treble, midrange cleaner.

On the Galaxy Tab S4 you can play great, especially if you connect an external controller. Stereo speakers increase the attractiveness of games, a clear display also allows you to have fun.

Autonomy

The battery capacity is 7300 mAh. This gives the Galaxy Tab S4 the ability to work for a very long time. Throughout the day, he was tested in the office. The multitasking desktop mode was used, articles were read, images were edited, text correspondence was conducted, and music was played. After six and a half hours, the charge level dropped to less than 10%.

This allows you to save work before putting the tablet on recharge. We can say that the tablet is enough for the whole day. If you use it mainly as a multimedia device, it may last for a couple of days, depending on the load.

Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 is a good example of a new breed of productive tablets. Samsung is not trying to enter the hybrids sector between tablets and computers, relying on a touch interface. There is a stylus that is useful to the artist and designers, or simply to those who want to take handwritten notes. He has other uses for work and entertainment.

Samsung DeX mode and an optional keyboard case also bring the tablet closer to computers. A familiar desktop is given, while all applications are distributed on it like on Android.

Is such a device worth 53,000 rubles? This is a rather high price, especially considering not the most advanced components inside. First of all, we are talking about last year's processor. If you want a tablet that can be a workstation and an Android entertainment device, few models can compare with the Galaxy Tab S4.

Among the alternatives include Microsoft Surface Go, which is unlikely to appear in Russia. In the West, it costs $ 400, a case and keyboard are sold separately for $ 100 each. The device runs on Windows S and can be upgraded to Windows 10, but you cannot go back.

There is also an iPad Pro pro for the same price as a Samsung tablet. The stylus is sold separately for $ 100, the keyboard for $ 160.

We can say that Samsung has well thought out a pricing strategy and its tablet falls into the gap between the two above. We can say that it will be a worthy purchase for those who really need it.

pros

  • Premium look and feel
  • Desktop without a DeX accessory
  • Beautiful and smooth software
  • One of the best stylus pens
  • Four speakers with good stereo separation

Minuses

  1. The sound from the speakers is normal at best.
  2. Heavy body and glass back
  3. Last year's processor
  4. The iris scanner on the tablet may look strange
  5. Camera quality

Introduction

A rather emotional first look at the new Samsung tablet came out on the site.

However, time passed, I got acquainted with the device and now I am ready to give an overview, claiming to be objective.

To begin with, the tablet market as a whole has been decreasing for 15 quarters in a row. For example, in the first quarter of 2018, the “drawdown” was 11.7%, and in the second - already 13.5%.

In 2018, Samsung is the worst in this aspect. According to IDC, in the 1st quarter, if measured year-on-year, the company did not supply 700,000 tablets, or 11.5% less, which is generally in line with the market, in the second quarter Samsung was ahead of the market - year-on-year shipments decreased by 16 %

The worst of the TOP 5 companies is Amazon. Year-on-year decline in the 1st quarter was by 50%, in the second - by 33%.

Apple shipments are stable - there are no crashes, nor growth.

Best of all is Huawei. The company is increasing supplies - by 13% in the 1st quarter of 2018 compared to the 1st quarter of 2017, and by 8% in the 2nd quarter.

However, so far this has no effect on market positions, and places in the TOP-5 are stable:

If you do segmentation, then tablets can be divided into two large categories - just tablets and tablets with a keyboard. And if the first and most extensive category is constantly decreasing and pulling market indicators along with it, then the second is growing.

The life cycle of tablets is maximum. Consumers prefer to use the device until it crashes or becomes hopelessly outdated (new versions of applications are not supported). The average tablet lifespan is 3-5 years. This is usually determined by battery degradation. It is with a long time of use that Amazon's strong drop can be attributed. The company's “tablets” are primarily aimed at consuming branded content - movies, books, purchases on the Amazon website. For these purposes, the device will last for a long time.

Huawei is expanding its position as it has taken a mid-price niche by offering customers interesting solutions with stylus and keyboard support.

Apple's share, as stated above, is stable, but this is due to sales of the cheapest iPad options. The average tablet price for the 3rd quarter of 2017 was $ 435, now (Q3 2018) it is $ 410. We can say that Apple's base tablets (without a stylus and keyboards) are the standard on the market today.

Samsung decided to put its tablets in the segment of business devices in terms of positioning.

Positioning

At Samsung, relying on IDC data, they believe that the tablet market with a keyboard will see double-digit growth in the next couple of years, and this is enough to present your product versions and fight. In addition, this market segment cannot be called highly competitive, since in fact there is an iPad Pro from Apple and tablets from Samsung. In the same, but lower price segment, Huawei is trying its hand.

Apple, in the spring of introducing its updated base tablet with support for third-party styluses, is pulling the average market price down.

Samsung argues that the Galaxy Tab S4 will be useful for office workers, most of whose workday is spent in the framework of software from Microsoft. I can agree with that. A tablet with a keyboard, especially in DeX mode, when you can work with windows and drag and drop files, is enough for everyday activities that do not require entering a large amount of data. If you connect an external monitor and a full keyboard, the tablet can replace the computer. Another question is, how justified are such combinations?

The second target category is creative people who like to draw. The Tab S4 has an excellent screen, and also comes with a high-quality stylus that has minimal parallax, that is, the difference between the touch point of the stylus and where it is displayed on the screen. The S Pen has 4096 sensitivity levels, which allows you to draw, stroke, in short, work with the stylus, like with an ordinary pencil. I believe that here the device also acts as an auxiliary device, since all the same, professionals prefer other equipment. For work on the road and for lovers just right.

Price and competitors

The cost of the tablet at the start is 52,990 rubles. By pre-ordering, you can get a cover-keyboard as a gift. Separately, it costs 8,990 rubles. The cover is not bad. Better is the version from Huawei, since it has a rigid fold that allows you to work by placing the tablet in its case on its knees and not fearing that it will roll over.

It is curious that, compared to last year, the starting price has decreased. Tab S3 started for 59 990 rubles for the LTE version, and at 49 990 rubles they evaluated the option only with Wi-Fi. I believe that if Samsung introduced, in addition to the LTE version, only the Wi-Fi version for the conditional 45 thousand rubles, then it would completely outplay Huawei. However, the Wi-Fi version, as I understand it, does not fit into the strategy of a business device, which is obliged to provide powerful functionality and maximum comfort. Yes, and so-so businessman among you, if you ride in a fast-food network for free Internet.

The main competitors of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 are Apple's iPad Pro 10.5, Huawei MediaPad M5 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Tab S3.

iPad Pro 10.5

Price - 46 990 rubles + stylus 6 990 rubles \u003d 53 980 rubles.

Keyboard - 11,490 rubles.

Apple's solution can be more profitable if you absolutely do not need a stylus, and iOS is also suitable for you. According to the technical characteristics, there is plus or minus parity in terms of user experience. Although Apple’s tablet has been on the market for a long time and probably an update will be released soon.

Huawei Mediapad M5 Pro

Price - from 42,990 + a stylus is included.

Here, the Android OS, there is also LTE.

According to the technical characteristics, parity is here. Feels like Huawei is perceived easier than Samsung. It seems all the same, but not that. The stylus works well, if not compared with Apple or Samsung. Actually, this is how you can walk in many ways. However, in the gray market the price is quite attractive. Yesterday there was a mixture about the presentation. I visited the flagship salon of Huawei, where all the tablets are available. I recommend to visit and make your own impression. On the way from Tverskaya metro to the store there is a Samsung salon, so you can first go there, and after 300 meters - in Huawei. And while the impressions of the Galaxy Tab are fresh, you will understand what I had in mind.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

From a distance, the tablets are not too different from each other. Close noticeable that the Tab S4 in terms of design has become more elegant and elegant. The Tab S3 also has a 9.7 screen, while the S4 has a 10.5.

It is also immediately noticeable that the new version no longer has a fingerprint scanner. The screen is larger and its resolution (it was 1536 x 2048 pixels and 4: 3 ratio, it became 1600 x 2560 pixels, 16:10 ratio), it is thinner than the frame and the face. I wrote about the verge and got to check the characteristics. It turned out that the thickness of the Tab S3 is 6 mm, and the S4 is 7.1 mm. However, visually it seems that the opposite is true. The secret is that Samsung made rounded beveled edges.

Otherwise, the devices are quite similar in appearance. The improvements are significant, but on the whole evolutionary: the new version of the chipset (835 for the new vs Snapdragon 820 for S3), the front camera is not 5 MP, but 8 MP, tweaked the sound, but it's still 4 speakers from AKG, the screen got better, and he got more settings. Also improved ergonomics and user experience when working with the stylus. All these and many other improvements are striking when directly comparing gadgets when they are nearby.

The price of the Tab S3 starts at 34 thousand rubles for Wi-Fi, LTE - already 44 thousand rubles. In the gray market, prices are much more interesting. I believe that if you want to save money, then perhaps this will be a better option for you than even MediaPad.

As a conclusion, I’ll say that if you need a tablet on Android and there are no budget restrictions, then Tab S4 is optimal, otherwise you should consider Tab S3 first, then Huawei. If you need iOS, then you have no options.

I emphasize separately that Samsung has a DeX mode that turns the tablet into a complete analogue of the laptop and significantly changes the user experience. Neither Apple nor Huawei have such solutions. To some extent, this makes Samsung's solution unique.

Appearance

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 is a combination of aluminum and glass in the face of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. There is no official confirmation of the manufacturer and version of the glass, so I focus on materials in Tab S3 in this matter.

Glass means fingerprints. A metal back would be more utilitarian, but, to my taste, less beautiful.

In a review of the Tab S3, the chef complained that Samsung did not know how to paint metal, and recommended an unpainted silver version. I carried the tablet in my backpack, as the cover was taken away from me. Several times a bunch of keys to the apartment dangled. There are no scratches on the screen and aluminum. Although, probably, I am not an indicator: I have any equipment always in perfect condition. I must say right away that I’m not shaking over her, but just thinking where I am putting.

On the right side of the tablet are the power button, a paired volume button, and below it is a slot for a nano SIM card and microSD card.

On the left side are only keyboard connectors.

At the bottom there are 2 speakers, a USB Type-C and a 3.5 mm jack.

On the top there are also 2 speakers and a microphone.

On the back, covered with glass, are your fingerprints, a 13 MP camera lens, the Samsung inscription and the signature that the sound is “pumped” by AKG. On the test I had an engineering sample with working stickers and covered with a protective film. I couldn’t remove the stickers, Samsung fit, in addition to tablets, to produce glue, so I decided not to bother and did not touch the film either.

In front of the screen is an 8 MP front camera, as well as an iris scanner.

At the ends of the device are 4 speakers, which AKG experts have worked on.

For the tablet, the sound is very good - bright, powerful and juicy. There is a certification of Dolby Atmos. But, in order to enjoy such sound when watching movies in full, I had to go to torrents, since not a single streaming service and video content store sell movies with such sound, and you can’t put a disk into the tablet. So, by the way, I found out that the tablet handles well video files weighing 13-15 GB. If you want to evaluate the sound in the store, then on YouTube there are official demos from Dolby.

Screen and stylus

This is the top Super AMOLED screen. In fact, this can be stopped, as the majority already have their own ideas about the beautiful.

For the rest I will tell you the obvious things. The screen is good, bright, juicy. There are ready-made presets for tuning, and you can configure them yourself. In the previous tablet, this was not.

When reviewing a previous-generation tablet, Eldar was unhappy that the screen wasn’t as crisp as the iPad Pro. Galaxy Tab S4 fixed this problem.

The angles of the screen are excellent.

According to Samsung, the stylus has undergone significant improvements and improvements, both in terms of work and ergonomics.

It’s convenient to work with him. You seem to be holding a ballpoint pen. The stylus allows you to write by hand or draw, and depending on the force of pressing, you can get light strokes and greasy strokes.

Here you should, of course, pay tribute to the software. For example, Samsung perfectly fine-tuned the proprietary application for notes Samsung Notes. It allows you to print, write with a stylus, and also has sufficient powerful capabilities for drawing.

I liked the third-party Autodesk editor more. It is free, its capabilities are much wider, but I think you don’t need to talk about it, since the application is widely known.

An entertaining feature is the drawing of gifs, which can then be sent by mail or in the messenger. Paper letters used to evoke warm feelings, but now they are self-created GIFs. And here and there the principle that efforts are made.

All the features of the Galaxy Note 9 stylus have also moved to the Galaxy Tab S4. The stylus can be used to open a context menu that allows you to create a note, take a screenshot of both the entire screen and its parts. You can take a screenshot and recognize text from it or automatically translate a foreign language.

You can also take notes on the screen off. To do this, bring the stylus to the screen, press the button, and then you can make notes. A very convenient option in situations where, for example, you need to urgently record a phone number or make another note.

In general, the tablet is fully optimized to work with S-Pen. It is convenient to make swipes on the screen with a stylus; it is easier for them to type and edit text. In many programs, you can write by hand, and the tablet then recognizes the text.

Performance

The tablet runs on the 835th chipset, made using 10 nanometer technology. According to many (decisive and strict judges), the 835th turned into a pumpkin after the release of 845th. In my opinion, nothing has changed and the Snapdragon 835 will have enough power for the next few years. The strength of the 845th for me is not so much in increased productivity, but in AI, which is sewn at the hardware level, dealing with resource optimization. Samsung AI has a software patch.

Below are test results that will probably tell you a lot:

“Asphalt 9” came out. A new benchmark in the mobile racing market. It is logical that the tablet copes with a bang. Samsung has a special game mode where you can turn off distracting notifications, as well as record the screen and your physiognomy during gameplay.

PUBG is good to play on the big screen with high graphics settings.

DeX mode

Thanks to Samsung's DeX mode, the tablet turns into a full-fledged mini-computer. But if smartphones for Dex need a special accessory, then in Tab S4 everything switches to a couple of touches.

The strength of Dex mode is that it offers a windowed interface that is more typical of laptops, not smartphones or tablets.

Also, unlike smartphones, the tablet can open any program, as in full screen mode. Thanks to DeX, the tablet has a real convenient multitasking.

Another exclusive feature is the ability to connect the tablet through an adapter to an external screen onto which to display the DeX interface, while the usual Android interface will remain on the tablet screen.

It is DeX that is the key advantage of the Tab S4 and, to some extent, justification for its cost, as competitors simply have nothing of the kind.

I emphasize once again for fans to write in the comments that the stylus is not needed, the keyboard is also convenient to work on a laptop, this DeX does not replace anything, it’s better to buy an iPad, and in general you need to watch cartoons at home. In this case, this device is not for you. For cartoons and bedside use, you should consider the basic options from Apple or Huawei, as they are cheaper. I hope this issue has been sorted out and we won’t see such nonsense in the comments.

Battery

The tablet has a 7300 mAh battery that supports fast charging. A full charge from scratch takes about 3 hours.

In my opinion, battery life is the strength of the gadget. If you turn on the video at maximum brightness and volume, you can get at least 13 hours of screen.

In everyday use, the screen lasts 10-12 hours. For example, here are the statistics for the first use. More than 10 hours. Keep in mind, I downloaded and installed various software in large volumes.

However, these indicators are not too different from the usual use of the device:

Camera

The cameras on the tablet got better. However, my main complaint is that there is no stabilization. The camera application here is traditional for all Samsung devices.

Here is an example of the front camera:

And then I worked on the image:

You can record time lapses:

Taking photos on a tablet at night is not the best idea, but one cannot say that it turns out to be frankly bad.

The tablet is not intended for shooting, and for photographing documents and video conferencing, the capabilities of the cameras are enough for the eyes.

Communication and Security

Only one version of the Galaxy Tab S4 will be sold in Russia - 64 GB + 4G LTE. And if the first problem is easily solved with a microSD card, then those who wanted to save money by purchasing the Wi-Fi version were out of luck. With a SIM card, the tablet turns into a huge phone. You can send SMS and call. The minus is that you need a headset for calls, since the Tab S4 has 4 very loud speakers, so you can only talk in the speakerphone mode.

The fingerprint scanner in the tablet is no longer there. Samsung finalized the eye scanning system, creating the so-called Smart-mode, when the device not only focuses on the iris, but also recognizes the face. In the settings you can choose how the device will recognize you, but the combination of face + iris works quickly. During the use of problems with unlocking the gadget, even in complete darkness did not occur. In sunglasses, the system, of course, does not recognize you.

Compared with the Tab S3, the Bluetooth version has been updated, now there is 5.0, Wi-Fi supports two bands and the AC standard. The tablet can be used as an access point.

The tablet has GPS and GLONASS. Everything works perfectly. It is probably optimal to use in a car, since on the street it’s not very convenient to look at the big screen on the go.

Impressions

The tablet is perceived as a flagship device with a good margin of performance for any task. When testing devices, I like to make them basic, it’s easier to understand all the pros and cons. For example, this 3000-word review ended up typing and editing all the way on the tablet. Following on YouTube will be a video review. The main application for video assembly was KineMaster. In my opinion, by the way, this is the best video editor for Android, not counting Premiere.

Compared to competitors, Tab S4 benefits include a stylus with advanced features - from drawing to working with text. The second main advantage is DeX, which has no analogues. The mode allows you to turn the tablet into a computer.

Indeed, the Samsung Tab S4 is designed for business users and creative people who can afford to buy a tablet. The cost is within the limits allowed for this category of devices.

The device has extensive capabilities and potential, but it is not for everyone. Of course, you can purchase it to read sites, play games and watch movies. The bright Super AMOLED screen and 4 speakers with Dolby Atmos support make this excellent. Watching a movie and playing on such a screen with such a great sound is a pleasure, but, in my opinion, it is too expensive for such simple needs.

I suppose they can write in the comments that the tablet should have the 845th processor, and Apple will soon release a new iPad. I partially agree about the processor, and not because it is not enough here, but just nice when there are recent solutions. About the release of the new iPad absolutely no difference, since the iPad and Galaxy Tab S4 can not be called direct competitors. One is a tablet with a good screen and a stylus for drawing, which Apple positions as a device for creativity. The second is a business device whose stylus is designed not only for drawing, but also for working with data, and the tablet itself, thanks to DeX, is capable of replacing a laptop at the right time.

Conclusion

Samsung managed to make an interesting product that is clearly focused on the business and creative audience, since the tablet’s capabilities are impressive. Of course, it is suitable as a home device for browsing the Internet, but for such simple purposes it is better to buy something cheaper - an iPad from Apple or a Tab S3 from Samsung.

To turn this flagship tablet into a kind of personal computer, a separate docking station is no longer needed. In the transformation on the go, he will help Keyboard Cover keyboard and electronic pen S Pen. The device with a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED-screen, in addition to high performance, also features high autonomy and high-quality sound. In this review, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 will find out all its advantages and disadvantages.

Android tablets in recent years have been clearly not the most popular gadget. But manufacturers hope that by combining such a device with a mechanical keyboard and modifying its software for convenient operation on a large screen, you can convince potential buyers to part with a rather solid (at the level of inexpensive ultrabook) amount.

Samsung is positioning the new Galaxy Tab S4 as a tablet for business people who are not alien to entertainment, but who value their time - both at work and at home, they don't seem to imagine themselves without the Microsoft Office suite of office programs. So a mechanical keyboard is very desirable constantly, but the role of a mouse can be assigned to an electronic pen (stylus). The Galaxy Tab S4, unlike the flagship smartphones of the previous generation, the PC mode - DeX (Desktop eXperience) - is now built-in and does not require. It is activated by contact with the original Keyboard Cover keyboard case, as well as in the settings and from the quick access panel. In the office or at home, to increase efficiency, it is recommended to connect a mouse and a full-size keyboard via the Bluetooth interface, and a large monitor through a special HDMI adapter (for the USB Type-C port).

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 review: design, ergonomics

The Galaxy Tab S4 case, like its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab S3, is formed by two tempered glass panels that connect the aluminum frame. Simultaneously with the screen diagonal (from 9.7 to 10.5 inches), the dimensions in the plan (from 237.3x169 mm to 249.3x164.3 mm) also changed, while the thickness increased by 1.1 mm (7.1 mm against 6 mm). There are two colors for the tablet - silver and black. In the latter case, prints collected by glass are especially noticeable. In addition, in everyday life, glass is not as practical as metal - it is much easier to damage it.

Most likely, the developers thought in advance that having a premium appearance Galaxy Tab S4 will serve its term in a case for life.

In the “glass” design of the Galaxy Tab S4, compared with its predecessor, there have been some changes. So, the frames around the screen have become noticeably thinner and almost the same in width. As before, the glass on both sides of the tablet is in contact with the frame without a 2.5D effect. At the same time, the Samsung logo disappeared above the display.

Now they put together a front camera, light and proximity sensors, as well as a camera used for recognition by the iris, and an infrared LED backlight.

The mechanical Home key with a built-in fingerprint scanner, which was traditionally under the display, disappeared from the Galaxy Tab S4, and two touch buttons “Back” and “Recent Applications” moved to the screen. A hole for the microphone was placed in the middle of the upper end, and two decorative speaker grilles on the sides.

Another pair of speakers was also symmetrically located at the bottom, and between them were a USB Type-C connector and a 3.5-mm audio connector.

The on / off button, as usual, turned out to be on the right edge in the company with a relatively large volume rocker. Below them is a hole for the microphone, and literally next to the bottom there is a closed slot, where on one side of the tray there is a place for a microSD card, and on the other for a subscriber identity module (nanoSIM format).

On the left edge, everything is ready for connection with a branded cover-keyboard - two technological notches, and in the middle - a 4-pin pogo-connector.

The rear panels with the inscriptions Samsung and Tuned by AKG, the Galaxy Tab S4 and Galaxy Tab S3 practically do not differ. For the rear photomodule, which includes a slightly protruding platform with a rear camera lens and an LED flash, a place was allocated in the upper part of the backdrop.

The Galaxy Tab S4 is watertight and dust resistant to IPxx. Note also that in DeX mode, the tablet only works in landscape orientation. That is, when the case is rotated 90 degrees, the image of the desktop does not flip. Windows tablets, by the way, have no such limitation.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 review: S Pen and Keyboard Cover

The kit with the new tablet includes an electronic pen S Pen, which is familiar, for example, on a flagship smartphone (our review). The stylus received a thin tip (0.7 mm) and high sensitivity to pressing force (4096 levels). Using an electronic pen, you can, for example, draw, make reminders (including on a locked screen), leave notes on photos, cut screenshots and even translate words. On the Galaxy Tab S4, the PENUP program is preinstalled specifically for the S Pen.

But Keyboard Cover is not included in the package. True, those who managed to pre-order the Galaxy Tab S4 receive a keyboard case for free. The rest will have to pay for this accessory.

The cover with 4-pin pogo-connector is made of dark plastic and equipped with a holder for S Pen. The 64-key keyboard integrated with the case is of an island type (on our test sample, unlike the retail version, there is no Cyrillic alphabet). To switch layouts to Cyrillic and vice versa, a separate button (Lang) is highlighted.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 review: screen

Without any exaggeration, we can say that the Galaxy Tab S4 got just a great for the tablet, bright and juicy Super AMOLED-screen. In addition to being economical in power consumption, it boasts good viewing angles and a deep black color. If the Galaxy Tab S3 was content with a 9.7-inch matrix, then the diagonal of the new flagship increased to 10.5 inches. At the same time, the resolution also increased: from 2048x1536 pixels to 2560x1600 pixels. The maximum pixel density on such a WQXGA display reaches 286 ppi. The 16:10 aspect ratio is more convenient for work than 16: 9 - more information is placed on the screen "in height".

Among the screen settings were, for example, such as brightness adjustment with automatic control, a blue filter, as well as scaling the screen and font with a possible change in the style of the latter. At maximum brightness (which is easy to reduce to a comfortable value), the image is well read even in sunny weather on the street. To enable the blue light filter with manual adjustment ("Transparency"), which makes the tablet screen more or less "icteric", it is proposed to create your own schedule. The display supports 10-point multi-touch, which is confirmed by the results of AntTuTu Tester.

One of four modes is set for the screen - “Main”, “Photo AMOLED”, “Movie AMOLED” and “Adaptive display”. At the same time, the last of them provides for the adjustment of the balance of the three primary colors. Selecting the “Basic” mode avoids acidic AMOLED shades. A completely high-quality olefobic coating is applied to the protective glass of the screen.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 review: cameras

If the front camera in the tablet looks quite natural, since it can be used, for example, for video communication or face recognition, then the presence of the rear photo module is not so clear. At least, shooting with a 10-inch gadget on the street looks quite funny from the side. Nevertheless, tablets even with a large screen are traditionally equipped with cameras on both sides. So, the predecessor of our flagship Galaxy Tab S3 was equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera with an aperture of f / 1.9 and autofocus, which the Galaxy Tab S4 seems to have inherited, preserving the LED flash as well. The maximum frame size with an aspect ratio of 4: 3 is 4128x3096 pixels (13 MP). But the matrix of the front camera increased from 5 MP to 8 MP, while the lens aperture increased from f / 2.2 to f / 1.9, but the fixed focus remained. The maximum resolution of a selfie is achieved with a 4: 3 aspect ratio and is 3264x2448 pixels (8 MP).

If you can record video in the maximum resolution Full-HD (1920 × 1080 pixels) with a frame rate of 30 fps on the front camera, then for the rear photo module, 4K UHD (3840 × 2160 pixels) at the same frame rate will be the best quality. For interval shooting (Hyperlapse mode) in Full HD-resolution, recorded events can be accelerated by 4, 8, 16 or 32 times. All content is saved in MP4 container files (AVC - video, AAC - sound).

Using horizontal swipes in the Camera application, shooting modes change, including HDR, Panorama, Professional, Beauty, Auto, Stickers, and Hyperlapse mentioned above. On the main screen, it is proposed to determine the flash mode, refer to the choice of filters for the image, change the camera from the rear to the front (or vice versa), and also go to the settings or to the “Bixby Camera”, which requires a Samsung account.

Recall that using it you can, for example, translate text from a page, search for similar images, read QR codes, etc. So far, not all have succeeded successfully.

In the "professional" mode, it is recommended to independently set the exposure level, value of photosensitivity (ISO) and preset for white balance. But on the "machine" the brightness of the image is adjusted by a slider in the form of an incandescent bulb that appears after the tap on the viewfinder. "Beauty" in the "Beauty" mode take care of the skin, face and eyes separately. The front camera can shoot not only ordinary, but also wide-angle self-portraits. But activation of the "Self-focus" mode means an attempt to blur the background. To achieve the best effect, it is recommended to hold the tablet on an outstretched arm, but in this position it is quite easy to lose control of the glass case. Funny stickers are used for images from both the rear and the front photo module. Some examples of photos from the rear camera can be viewed.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 review: sound

The “vocal data” of the Galaxy Tab S4 is associated with four speakers tuned by the AKG methodology, as indicated by the inscription on the back of the case. Recall that Samsung owns such “sonorous” brands as Harman / Kardon, JBL and AKG.

For surround sound and surround sound, it is recommended that you activate the Dolby Atmos option. But such "enhancers" as UHQ Upscaler and "Professional Tube Amplifier" can only work when a wired headset is connected. At the disposal is also a regular and graphic equalizer with presets.

To select the optimal volume level, it is necessary to note a preset suitable for your age, or add an individual profile, after having subjected yourself to a little testing. The built-in speakers of the tablet sound pretty good, with a bang coping with the voice acting of films and games. Yes, and simple music that does not rely on deep bass can be heard.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 review: filling, performance

The high performance of the Galaxy Tab S4 is easily explained by the flagship mobile platform, however, of the previous generation - Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (MSM 8998), created taking into account design standards of 10 nm. Eight computing cores of its processor, working in tandem with the Adreno 540 graphics accelerator, are divided into two clusters of Kryo 280 cores. At the same time, the first quartet is clocked at up to 2.45 GHz, and the second up to 1.9 GHz. The basic configuration of the tablet complement 4 GB of RAM.

Showing impressive test results, a powerful processor allows you to set the maximum graphics settings for "heavy" games.

To expand the built-in storage of 64 GB in size on one side of the tray in a closed slot there is a place designed for a microSD / HC / XC memory card up to 400 GB in size. In addition, thanks to the support of USB-OTG technology, a USB flash drive can be connected to the tablet.

The other side of the aforementioned tray is for installing a nanoSIM format subscriber identity module. The built-in X16 LTE modem allows you to organize access to the Internet via cellular networks, while the maximum transfer speed of 1 Gbit / s is declared (Cat.16). In addition, the pre-installed application "Phone" makes it possible to use the tablet for voice communication. Along with support for the “Russian” frequency ranges (LTE-FDD b3, b7, b20), the Galaxy Tab S4 also received 2-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac (2.4 and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.0, the latter providing increased range and transmission speed.

To determine location and navigation, not only GPS, GLONASS and BDS satellite systems are used, but also Galileo. In addition, support for A-GPS technology is promised.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 review: autonomy

The capacity of the non-removable battery in the Galaxy Tab S4 is 7,300 mAh, while its predecessor (Galaxy Tab S3) has 6,000 mAh. Included with the new flagship is the proprietary Adaptive Fast Charging Adapter EP-TA20EBE (5 V / 2 A; 9 V / 1.67 A). It takes approximately 3 hours 20 minutes to fully charge the battery.

AnTuTu Tester rated the energy efficiency of the flagship tablet at 11,866 points. According to the manufacturer, on a single charge you can talk on a 3G network for up to 50 hours, surf the Internet (3G / LTE / Wi-Fi) for up to 9/10/10 hours, respectively; listen to music up to 195 hours or up to 16 hours watch a video. At the same time, playing a set of videos in MP4 format (hardware decoding) and Full HD quality at full brightness every hour reduced the battery charge by about 9.7% (test for 7 hours).

Battery life will help extend the activation of one of the energy saving modes - moderate or maximum.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Review: Software Features

In DeX mode, the tablet displays a multi-window interface that resembles the Windows desktop. So, its bottom panel has collected minimized applications, quick settings and control buttons. A window with a running program can be easily resized, as well as drag it to anywhere on the screen. It’s not very convenient to do such manipulations with your fingers, here the S Pen electronic pen comes to the rescue.

The operating system interface Android 8.1.0 (Oreo) replaces the proprietary shell Samsung Experience 9.5. A long press on the program icon on the main screen opens a quick menu.

The switches on the curtain of quick settings and notifications are placed on two horizontal tabs. It also provides brightness control and the transition to general settings. A separate icon is highlighted to activate DeX mode.

In the launcher, you can choose between the usual style of the home screen (all program shortcuts are collected on desktops) and the style with a separate menu (screen) of applications. The transition to the application screen is performed by swiping up, although it is also possible to display the familiar icon button on the screen. On application icons, it is convenient to display indicators not only about the availability of notifications, but also about their number.

For the navigation panel, it is easy to swap the position of the Back and Recent icons, as well as change its background.

Since there is no fingerprint scanner in the tablet, biometric recognition of the face or iris of the eye, as well as their combination - the so-called smart scan, is offered for quick unlocking of the device.

Among the additional functions, it is worth noting the split-screen and pop-up window modes.

Thanks to the “Protected Folder” using Samsung Knox, you can safely store confidential documents, photos, videos, applications, notes and other files in an encrypted form on your tablet.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 review: purchase, conclusions

Of course, the main “feature” of the Galaxy Tab S4 is the built-in DeX mode, which, when a mouse and keyboard is connected, turns the flagship tablet into a PC. The filling of the new device with a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED-screen provides high performance and excellent autonomy. Four AKG-tuned speakers and Dolby Atmos support deliver high-quality sound with extra effects.

The easily soiled surface of the glass case, which remained unprotected from water and dust, is clearly visible even to the naked eye. But the main thing is that the keyboard cover, unlike the S Pen electronic pen, which replaces the mouse on the go, is not included. Therefore, Keyboard Cover, which was estimated at the time of testing at 8,990 rubles, will have to be purchased separately. The same applies to the HDMI adapter for connecting a monitor (about 2 thousand rubles) and the annual license for the Microsoft Office 365 software package (personal version - 2 699 rubles). We do not even take into account a full-sized mechanical Bluetooth keyboard and a wireless mouse. Although their acquisition is unlikely to significantly change the picture as a whole. The fact is that the price of the Galaxy Tab S4 at the start of sales is 52,990 rubles.

As, perhaps, the only full-fledged Android competitor, you can consider the 10.8-inch tablet Huawei MediaPad M5 10 Pro, for which at the time of testing in the company’s online store they asked for 42 990 rubles.

At first glance, the rivals are not much different in terms of filling. So, the Huawei MediaPad M5 10 Pro, already made in an aluminum case, has an IPS screen with the same WQXGA resolution, a HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor, a battery of 7,500 mAh, and a fingerprint scanner. The kit also includes an electronic pen, which is called the M Pen here, but the keyboard case, at least at the time of testing, came with the tablet as a gift (you can buy something similar on AliExpress for about 2 thousand rubles). In this case, the PC mode is called EMUI Desktop. By the way, if office use of the tablet is not very interesting, and you want to take the device from the flagship line, you should think about last year's Samsung Galaxy Tab S3, for the Wi-Fi version of which it was asked in large retail chains for 34,990 rubles.

The results of the review of the tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab S4
