What is better nokia lumia 1520 or 1530. Memory cards are used in mobile devices to increase the amount of memory for saving data

The answer to this question depends on what you generally expect from a smartphone. If you need a dialer with the ability to periodically access the Network, then Nokia Lumia 1520 is not for you. Or you - this is not for the Lumia 1520. This is a device from the category that Neil Stevenson very accurately called “super-jeejah” in his ingenious “Anathema”, and colleague Perekalin successfully dubbed “shades” - perhaps somewhat derogatoryly, but it’s correct in the sense that this is no longer a phone in its usual form, but something completely different.

In short, the Lumia 1520 is a compact tablet that still fits in a pocket — at least in a large pocket. And this unit is intended for those who do not want life without the Network, practically live in it and need a convenient terminal to access it in any conditions and under any circumstances. Accordingly, it is designed.

⇡ Design

The device is really gigantic, it is impossible to estimate the size from photographs - this must be seen live. Of course, we have already met even more monstrous smartphones, to take at least the same Samsung Galaxy Mega and Sony Xperia Z Ultra. But Lumiya is very impressive. One thing saves: the black color is very slim, in this version “Lumiya” looks a little more compact.

But the case is not too thick: the 8.7 millimeters declared by the manufacturer are not quite true, in most places it is rather 9.4 millimeters. The “blotch” of the camera adds quite a lot: in this place, the thickness increases to 10.7 mm. Of course, not a record: the same Xperia Z Ultra is much thinner. But still the thickness is small, especially in contrast with the length and width.

The branded case hints at the fact that the Lumia 1520 is a tablet

As for the mass, here is how to look. On the one hand, 208 grams is a lot, the Lumia 1520 pocket draws you be healthy. On the other hand - what else could you expect from a device with a diagonal of 6 inches? In addition, you can recall the Lumia 920 with its 185 grams, compared with her new model is not so heavier. The comparison is all the more appropriate because, like the 920th, the Lumia 1520 has built-in wireless charging: this is the only current smartphone in the company's lineup that does not require a special case to use this function.

In all “Lumiyas”, except for the 920th, there were contacts on this place for connecting a wireless charging case. In the Lumia 1520, this charge is built into the case

The case, according to a long-standing Finnish tradition, interrupted only once, is completely plastic. The soft touch coating is applied to the polycarbonate, so that it is pleasant to the touch and does not offend the eye. True, it turned out a little marko, but there's nothing to be done - beauty requires at least some sacrifice.

The body shape and materials are chosen very correctly: the rounded edges do not cut the palm, and the tenacious coating reduces the chance of accidentally dropping the smartphone to almost zero. The only complaint to those who designed the case and select the components: we did not like the side buttons at all. Firstly, they are very indistinctly pressed. And secondly - not too well located. You almost inevitably press the power button, lifting the device from the table - it is located exactly in the place for which the hand itself strives to grab. And the camera button for some reason is too far from the edge of the case: with a natural photographic grip, the finger does not automatically fall on it, you have to specifically reach out - in the previous “Lumiya” this was not.

Although not, there is another flaw that needs to be mentioned: in our Lumia 1520 instance, the perforation of the main speaker was skewed by several degrees. Not so much that it was striking, but still such carelessness was not to the face of the apparatus for 29,990 rubles.

Despite the fact that the Lumia 1520 uses an LCD display rather than AMOLED, the developers left the function to display the clock on the display of a locked smartphone. But, since in the case of the LCD, constantly keeping the screen on is much more expensive, the clock does not appear constantly, but appears for a short time by a signal from the proximity sensor. Relatively speaking, when you take your smartphone out of your pocket (although you can just as easily close it with your hand and open the sensor eye next to the camera again in a second), it’s convenient to watch the time when the smartphone is on the table.

Also, the device can turn on by double tapping the display. The accelerometer is not involved in this action, only the sensitive layer is used - so everything works fine even when shaking, for example, in transport. But blocking the Lumia 1520 in the same way will not work - so completely forgetting the power button, as in the case of the LG G2, will fail.

Shortly before the Finnish company Nokia ceased to exist and passed into the hands of Microsoft, the Nokia Lumia 1520 flagship with a quad-core processor, a good camera and a large diagonal was presented to the public. In fact, 1520 belongs to the class of phablets, that is, devices moving from a smartphone to a tablet. What is good about the phone, and what are its shortcomings - will tell a review of Nokia Lumia 1520.

Despite the fact that the device entered the market at a time when the fate of the once-famous brand was being decided, the creators did not carelessly create devices. Lumia 1520 is a good smartphone with top features for its time. Full list in the table.

Nokia Lumia 1520

The specifications of Nokia Lumia 1520 show that this device, like other solutions of the company, is one of the best in its time.

  1. The model had Nfc chip, a large supply of memory.
  2. This is the first device on Windows Phone with a large diagonal and four processor cores.
  3. Smartphone supports LTE networkIt has two ranges of Wi-Fi.
  4. The ability to use the navigator without an internet connection.

Design

The Nokia Lumia 1520 smartphone, like the company's earlier devices, made of polycarbonate.  The front panel is closed Gorilla Glass. The device is a monoblock, that is, there is no removable cover. Colors of execution - black, red, white and yellow.

On a note! All shades are matte, which was a change, since before that the company made a glossy surface. According to reviews, she got too dirty. The matte case does not have such problems.

As before, the back cover is convex. Despite the fact that the smartphone is quite thick, there is clearly a tendency to decrease in thickness. Given the diagonal, the device does not seem too bulky and visually very pleasant, similar impressions remain from its use. The model is ergonomicnot slippery. The phone looks bright and stylish.

A signature feature of the Lumia line is black glass, which seems to be inserted into the case. If you look closely, you can see that the display rises slightly above the surface. On the top panel is a camera and speaker. At the bottom of the smartphone there are three touch buttons - back, search and Win.

Location of control buttons  and other elements quite typical for Nokia.

The build quality is excellent, the design as a whole for Nokia is not new, and many customers liked it.

Screen

Smartphone Nokia Lumia 1520 is equipped with a 6-inch display, which works on IPS technology. The screen resolution is 1920 * 1080 pixels, and this is the first Windows Phone with such a resolution.

On a note! Although the device has become more detailed in the picture, not all applications were immediately rewritten for a large number of points, so in some cases they did not look right.

The device has a good margin of brightness, wide viewing angles, excellent contrast. In general, the screen deserves only praise, and there is nothing to complain about here.

  1. The model, as before, supports work with gloves.
  2. The touch is designed for 10 touches at the same time.
  3. There is an oleophobic coating of high quality.
  4. The screen is covered with scratch resistant Gorilla Glass.
  5. Became a new chip unlock the display by double-clicking on the screen.

In Nokia 1520, the resolution of the main camera is 20 megapixels. Some users remember that at one time the company introduced cameras and with higher resolution. This was not always very effective, but the customer was “led” to it. The application has a large number of settings, manual modes. Among the interesting modes - panorama, animated photos, change of focus.

The model implements the PureView function, which works on the principle of creating a raw image in high resolution. After the processor processes the frame, adds brightness, removes noise and slightly reduces resolution. The technology works perfectly, and the picture is very pleasant regardless of the illumination of the room. The front camera is able to improve the picture and smooth out some flaws as beauty in modern Chinese.

The device can shoot video in FHD and HD resolution, it does it well. The device has special utility that is responsible for sound. Due to this, the sound on the video turns out to be high-quality even when shooting in a noisy place. The secondary camera only shoots in HD quality.

Important! The only thing that should be noted about the video is the correct location of the phone during shooting. In order not to have to watch videos in a special player, you need to hold the phone with the buttons up, otherwise the picture will be displayed upside down or at an angle of 90 degrees.

Performance and autonomy

Lumia 1520 is the company's first smartphone on a quad-core processor. Obviously, this step was taken to increase productivity, but given the capabilities of the operating system, it is very difficult to feel it. In fact, the operating system does not offer the user a game, and he can only work with applications. Even older processors on two cores coped with this task successfully, so you can’t see the difference. The device works quickly, but if you still dig into the tests, you can see by the numbers the highest speed than any device on Windows.

The phone has a capacious 3400 mAh battery. This is the second model of the company that supports wireless charging technology. This process will take about four hours. The cable charges faster - 2.5 hours. By battery life, the device shows 12 hours of video viewing, 11 hours of reading. The total smartphone time under load is about 2 days, which is very worthy.

Conclusion

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is a great Windows smartphone. There are no disastrous moments, and everything from design to performance, done efficiently. Among other devices on Windows, the model is a leader, but it is difficult to compare it with Android phones. The reason is that the operating system does not allow the phone to be used at 100%. The disadvantage of the device is definitely only the OS. Not offering the client anything new and interesting, she forced buyers to turn away from Nokia technology, since quite often smartphones were positioned as an option for those who need to work, but not have fun. And there are always more people who want to use the device for multimedia purposes.

The price of Lumia 1520 at one time was 30 thousand rubles, and that’s a lot of money for a phone that did not give you the opportunity to play. It's no secret that often it is for these purposes that expensive devices are bought if there is no need for a good camera or device status. It is for this reason that the buyer had doubts about the need to purchase Nokia, when for the same money you can buy a device on iOS or Android, which, among other things, will give a much larger set of features.

Nokia Lumia 1520

Nokia Lumia 1520 adheres to the general style of the Lumia line: familiar from the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925 models, the monolithic body is made of soft-touch matte polycarbonate. The smartphone is available in the corporate colors of the line: red, yellow, white and black. We had a yellow model on the test. Despite the fact that the possibility of wireless charging is built into the phone itself and there is no need to buy a special case, the smartphone turned out to be very thin, almost the same as the Nokia Lumia 925 (the actual difference is 0.2 mm), and visually seems thinner than other representatives of the line. The body is monolithic with edges rounded on all sides and “soft” but not rounded corners.

Of course, the main “highlight” of the Lumia 1520 is simply the gigantic dimensions for the line: the smartphone has a 6-inch display diagonal! The length of the device is almost 163 mm, the width is 85.4, and the weight is 209 g. This is the first time Lumiya has done this, because the market is pressing and forcing to do such desperate things. The smartphone is clearly not for one hand. Of course, answering a call or turning a page in a document is quite possible with one hand, but even writing an SMS without using both hands is unrealistic. This is not a flaw, it is just a fact that you need to accept and stop believing the tales about "amazing ergonomics and easy one-handed operation."

On the front panel, in addition to the screen, there are touch keys “Home”, “Back” and “Search” at the bottom, and a speaker with a front camera and sensors - at the top.

Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first WP-smartphone with Full HD-screen. Among the most significant features of the device are a 6-inch IPS screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 hardware platform, a 3400 mAh battery and a 20 MP PureView camera. To the question whether the WP-smartphone needs such power and what it can be used for, we searched for the answer for several weeks.

Equipment

The smartphone is delivered in a cardboard box standard for the manufacturer in blue color with the device image, technical specifications and technical information printed on it. Inside the package is a smartphone, a clip for removing trays for SIM and a memory card, a vacuum-type stereo headset to match the color of the smartphone, a charging adapter, a USB cable and accompanying documentation. Together with a smartphone, a branded bumper with a black folding flip came to our review. The folding part can be bent in two places, allowing you to install the smartphone on the table at different angles. Closing or opening a flip does not affect turning the display backlight on or off.

Design and ergonomics

With the advent of the Nokia Lumia 925 model, the design of the manufacturer's new products has changed a bit. Sooner or later this was to happen, because everything that we saw earlier, with the exception of budget devices, was already implemented in Nokia N9, which, as we know, was released back in mid-2011. Lumia 800, Lumia 900, Lumia 920, Lumia 1020 appeared behind it (the difference is only in the protruding camera module).

Therefore, it is not surprising that the Nokia Lumia 1520 inherited the features of the Lumia 925, and not the earlier predecessors. Except for some nuances, the smartphone in question is an oversized Nokia Lumia 925. The main difference is the lack of a metal frame. Given the dimensions, this made the device’s case more prone to deformation, namely: it creaks when squeezed, and the glass on the front panel bends, leaving stains on the display. Moreover, at the moment when you put the smartphone on the table, on the opposite side of the camera, that is, the display, noticeable stains appear. Another design flaw is the overly soft camera key, which, moreover, practically does not protrude above the body. Excessive softness often leads to an accidental camera start. Especially often this happens during this time of year, frosty winter, when it becomes impossible to use a smartphone on the street without gloves. Unfortunately, a highly sensitive sensor does not always respond to touches with cloth gloves, unlike, for example, the HUAWEI Ascend P6 and Mate, or even LG G2.
That’s probably all. Now about the positive aspects of the Nokia Lumia 1520 case. The device turned out recognizable, which, however, is not surprising. The front is covered with tempered Gorilla Glass 2 with rounded corners. A rubber sealant surrounds the glass around the perimeter, which, as we already know, doesn’t help much. In the upper part of the glass, a slot was made for the earpiece. Under it is the logo, to the left of it is the eye of the front camera, to the right is the light and proximity sensor. Hardware control keys are located under the display and are almost invisible when turned off.

There are two slots on the left side wall at the upper end: for Nano-SIM (lower) and MicroSD. Access to them is possible only when using an object with a sharp tip, which becomes standard for most modern devices. On the opposite side, from the bottom up, the following keys are located: a two-position camera button, a power button and a dual volume control key. All have ceramic coating. The keys practically do not protrude above the body, which is why working with them cannot be called comfortable. On the top there is a headphone jack. On the bottom is a Micro-USB cable connector. The conversation microphone is located at the junction of tempered glass with a rubber seal. The second microphone is on the back between the headphone jack and the camera flash. In total, the smartphone has four microphones.

The rear part of the body, as well as the sidewalls, is made of rough plastic (polycarbonate, this is the fashion word it is called by manufacturers). The main feature of plastic in Nokia smartphones is that it is not just painted on top, but completely monochrome. This means that scuffs on it will be less noticeable. Unlike the slightly unusual Nokia Lumia 1020 with its noticeably protruding camera module, the camera in the Nokia Lumia 1520 almost does not catch the eye, except for the black plastic under the protective glass. The camera rises about a millimeter above the body, but taking into account which matrix is \u200b\u200bhidden inside, this is excusable. If you position the smartphone horizontally, then on the left side we will see the ringing speaker grid, in the center - the logo of the manufacturer and manufacturer of optics for the camera, actually the camera itself, a flash consisting of two LEDs and a hole for microphones.

In general, if you do not discard the shortcomings described above, the design and ergonomics were evaluated by us at four. Such an expensive smartphone should not have the listed disadvantages. If we talk about the convenience of using such a large device, the author, accustomed to smartphones of various sizes, could not get used to the dimensions of the Nokia Lumia 1520. You need to understand that working with a smartphone with one hand is almost impossible, that is, we are faced with a small tablet rather than big smartphone. In order to evaluate the overall dimensions of the device, we suggest taking a look at the comparison table, which shows smartphones with a screen diagonal close to 6 inches.

operating system

Smartphone Nokia Lumia 1520 is running the latest version of Windows Phone 8.0 (Nokia Black). The smartphone in question was the first WP-device with a Full HD-screen. Since the smartphone does not carry anything new, except for changes in the Nokia Lumia Black update itself, we will describe what this update is. It, by the way, was already received by earlier models of the manufacturer.

Folders - the ability to create folders with a grouping of any applications available on the smartphone. Folders can be moved to the main screen;

Change of focus - an application for amateur photographers with the choice of focusing on the subject after the picture was taken. For this, the camera takes from two to eight pictures;

Projector is an application for displaying static images from a smartphone screen on a TV or monitor screen. The functionality and usefulness of this application is so low that it simply makes no sense to compare it with what Android smartphones offer.

Stories - sorting all available photos and videos into interactive groups at the place of their creation;

Camera - an application that combines the other two - Nokia Pro Cam and Nokia Smart Cam.

Other changes include the appearance of a new lock screen (Nokia Glance 2.0), disabling automatic screen orientation, the ability to save pictures (for the current model and Nokia Lumia 1020) in DNG format, and support for devices with Bluetooth LE technology. Otherwise, we have a WP-smartphone that is well-known for any other model.

If in budget models the smooth operation of the interface is a plus, since the vast majority of Android smartphones cannot brag about this, then for smartphones of the middle and high price segments, this is taken for granted. Therefore, it’s not worth talking about the smooth operation of the interface in the Nokia Lumia 1520, if only because budget smartphones have this characteristic, but the way the applications work deserves special mention. For example, let’s pay attention to the fact that the operating system still does not have correctly working applications for watching videos in various containers, not to mention that you will not find a single free application for these purposes. That is, having a smartphone with a large screen, it is logical to assume that one of the scenarios for using the device will be watching a video. And here you need to be prepared for the fact that the least trouble will be with .MP4 and .AVI files, they can be downloaded directly to the device, bypassing the Nokia Phone desktop application and additional programs already in the device itself. Just find HD or Full HD video in such containers is becoming increasingly difficult. Something similar happens with .FB2 files. For example, the FBReader application, which the author uses to read books, simply does not see the files copied to the smartphone’s memory. Downloading them through the Dropbox application is not possible for several reasons - the download just freezes, but even if it started, where to look for the downloaded file is not clear. Fortunately, there are no problems with reading applications in Market Place. There are those that allow you to join not only Dropbox, but also OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive), Drive, etc. Nevertheless, users of iOS or Android will have to get used to such features of Windows Phone for a very long time, as well as to the fact that Market Place has a much lower percentage of useful or, at least, correctly working software. The described examples are only a small part of what a user of a WP smartphone will encounter. If for you it will be the first smartphone, it is quite possible that you simply will not notice such roughness.

Hardware platform

In addition to having a Full HD-screen, the novelty became the first WP-smartphone based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 system-on-chip. Today it is one of the most productive systems, it can be found in almost all flagships (except HTC) among Android smartphones. But, if it’s more likely a necessity there, since Android is the most demanding hardware operating system, what to do with this “goodness” in Nokia Lumia 1520 is not clear yet. On the other hand, having the most advanced WP-smartphone today, the user can be sure of two things: a) the relevance of iron will remain for at least another year and a half; b) the same period of time, or even more, he will receive all software updates. Therefore, from the point of view of the appropriateness of the purchase, Nokia Lumia 1520 is now not the best offer, but in terms of investing money, it will remain a relevant device for a long time.

The smartphone has 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of permanent memory, which can be expanded with memory cards. The manufacturer did not follow the fashion and deprive the device of a slot for memory cards, for which special thanks should be said.

One of the undoubted advantages of Nokia smartphones and the Windows Phone operating system is free navigation. In Nokia Lumia 1520, it is represented by HERE Drive +, HERE Maps, and HERE Transit. It is with a WP-smartphone that it is best to travel to unfamiliar places. The main thing before the trip is not to forget to download the necessary free maps. The HERE Drive + app will be useful for motorists, HERE Maps for hikers, and HERE Transit when you need to get from one point to another by public transport. That is why we recommend lovers to travel WP-smartphones. This does not mean that there are no decent navigation applications on Android or iOS smartphones, they are just paid there.

As for the speed of determining your location and the operation of GPS in general, the Nokia Lumia 1520 smartphone has shown its best side. The search for satellites is carried out instantly, there are also no complaints about the accuracy of maps and routing.

With the telephone part everything is more or less good. The speaker volume is high, the reception quality, including wireless networks, is not satisfactory, but the location of the spoken speaker is controversial. On the one hand, the same arrangement in many devices, on the other, a very noticeable difference in volume between whether the speaker is in front of the ear or not. We have to constantly monitor so as not to displace the smartphone, which is quite tiring during long conversations.

We already talked about the volume of the speakers, with this the device is more than good. Now about the sound in the headphones. By this parameter, the smartphone can be put on a par with the best. The volume and detail are on top. Music lovers will be happy.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 has a 3400 mAh battery, which is a record for WP smartphones. This allows him to work 2-3 days at a standard load and one day with very active use. Under the average load means the automatic synchronization of two Google accounts over Wi-Fi, work on a 3G network, about 20 minutes of calls, several text messages per day.

To listen to music, a standard player was used, the volume at a value of 24 out of 30 possible, MP3 files with a bitrate of 320 Kbps. In the read mode, all wireless communications are disabled, including data transfer on the mobile network, and the brightness of the display is set to average. Navigation includes driving directions in the HERE Drive + app. The brightness is set to the average value, all communication modules for data transfer are disabled. When playing video, the display brightness is set to average, the sound volume in the headphones is 24 out of a possible 30. When playing video from Youtube, the display brightness is set to average, the sound volume in the headphones is 24 out of 30 possible levels.

Display

Nokia is one of the few manufacturers to use both IPS and AMOLED screens in their models. The smartphone Nokia Lumia 1520 has a 6-inch IPS-matrix with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. The display is covered with an oleophobic coated Gorilla Glass 2 and has an anti-reflective layer. In the screen settings there are a large number of additional items, for some reason scattered in separate categories, allowing you to make the image not only better readable, but also adjust the color temperature and saturation.

The brightness of the display is adjusted in a separate section. The user can choose one of three options or set automatic configuration. Brightness values \u200b\u200b(with automatic tuning) range from 3.8 cd / m² to 589 cd / m². When manually setting the brightness, the extreme values \u200b\u200bare as follows: 60 cd / m² and 320 cd / m². High visibility, as well as the presence of an anti-reflective layer, contributes to good visibility on the street, including when it is exposed to direct sunlight. The contrast of the display is 1550: 1 - this is a very good indicator.

By manually adjusting the saturation and color temperature, you can significantly affect the final image. Unfortunately, to carry out standard measurements, because under Windows Phone there are no corresponding applications (if we didn’t look well and tell me, we will be grateful), we could not. According to subjective assessment and the results available on the Internet, the Nokia Lumia 1520 display is very, very good. All of the above allows you to call the display one of the best Full HD-screens to date.

Camera

Nokia has long made it a rule to use the best of what is today in its flagships. The Nokia Lumia 1520 has a 20 megapixel module (1 / 2.5 ”) with optical stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics. The maximum resolution of the resulting images is 19 megapixels with an aspect ratio of 4: 3 and 16 megapixels with an aspect ratio of 16: 9. Both options are only available in conjunction with 5 megapixel snapshots. That is, by making one frame, the camera saves two files, one in full resolution, and the second in reduced. When viewing the footage in the smartphone, the user will see only reduced copies of the files, and only when connected to a PC can you see both options.

The following settings are available for video: 1080p at 30/25/24 frames / s and 720p at the same frame rate. When photographing and recording video, zoom is available without loss of quality, which was made possible by the PureView function.

You can start the camera through the menu or by pressing a key (works from any state). The screen of the smartphone is completely given to the viewfinder. When shooting with a 4: 3 aspect ratio, black bars remain on the sides of the screen. All pictograms are translucent. On the right side of the screen there are icons for calling up a pop-up menu (different for photos, videos, burst shooting) and three icons for switching between the listed modes. At the top of the screen there are shortcuts for entering the gallery, framing and a retractable line with switches for flash modes, focus method (auto, manual, infinity), white balance, ISO, exposure and shutter speed. When you click on any of them, except for the flash, a semicircle appears on the right side of the screen with a scale for choosing detailed settings, whether it is an ISO value, shutter speed or something else. When recording video, there is no shortcut to switch to cropping, but there is the possibility of choosing a white balance, turning on the flash and manual focus, which is first encountered in smartphones. In burst mode, no additional settings, including the number of frames, are provided.

The speed of the camera is high.

Summary

Nokia Lumia 1520 proves that in technical terms, WP-smartphones are no longer so hopelessly far from Android and iOS devices. Another thing is that so far there is nowhere to put all this performance. If we discard the features of the Windows Phone operating system, then we will see a device with an excellent 6-inch Full HD-screen and sound, a good camera, free navigation and good autonomy.
